Primary prevention in health care employees: a prospective intervention study with a 3-year training period.

Irritant contact dermatitis is a mayor problem in health care employees. Because educational programs have shown convincing success in certain occupations (e.g. in hairdressers), this study investigates the effect of a special training program in health care trainees. 521 trainees from 14 nursing schools in Central Germany were randomly divided in 2 groups, (i) an intervention group with a regular teaching protocol regarding all aspects of primary prevention and (ii) a control group without any further teaching. Morphological changes of the hands, use of hand care creams and knowledge regardin

Allergic contact dermatitis to synthetic rubber gloves: changing trends in patch test reactions to accelerators.

BACKGROUND: Rubber gloves are one of the most frequent causes of occupational allergic contact dermatitis, especially in health care workers. OBSERVATIONS: We describe 23 patients with allergic contact dermatitis due to rubber accelerators in rubber gloves, some with disseminated dermatitis, treated during a 2-year period. Three had IgE-mediated latex allergies. Sixteen were health care workers from a single institution whose dermatitis was temporally related to the switch to latex-safe gloves. Each had positive patch test reactions to 1 or more rubber accelerators, including carbamates, thiu

Skin deposition of nickel, cobalt, and chromium in production of gas turbines and space propulsion components.

Skin exposure to nickel, cobalt, and chromium may cause sensitization and allergic contact dermatitis and it is known that many alloys and platings may release significant amounts of the metals upon contact with skin. Occupational exposure to these sensitizing metals has been studied in different settings with regards to airborne dust and different biological end points, but little is known about deposition on skin from airborne dust and direct contact with materials containing the metals. In this study, skin deposition was studied in 24 workers in an industry for development and manufacturing

SKIN FEATURES IMPORTANT FOR THE OCCURRENCE OF CONTACT DERMATITIS IN HEALTHCARE WORKERS.

The occurrence of skin lesions in healthcare workers is associated with a negative impact on important skin functions, including protection from mechanical injuries, sunlight, dehydration, and penetration of chemical substances or pathogenic microorganisms. In healthcare professionals, the most common occupational skin disease is contact dermatitis (CD), either irritant (ICD) or allergic (ACD), and typically on the hands. ICD accounts for about 80% of occupational CD, making it the most frequent cause. According to the literature, CD frequency is higher among healthcare professionals than othe

Are workers on board vessels involved with chemicals from treated ballast water sufficiently protected? - A decadal perspective and risk assessment.

Ballast Water Managements Systems (BWMS) installed on vessels may use Active Substances (AS) to inactivate organisms. This paper provides new insights in the global issue of noxious Disinfection By-Products (DBP) produced with primarily oxidant-based BWMS, and the risk assessment for workers, including port State control officers, while performing tasks on a vessel that involve exposure to treated ballast water. The Joint Group of Experts on the Scientific Aspects of Marine Environmental Protection - Ballast Water Working Group (GESAMP-BWWG) plays a role in the certification process of BWMS th

Clinical evaluation of a radio-protective cream for the hands of the pediatric interventional cardiologist.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of UltraBLOX™ radiation attenuating hand cream during lengthy cardiac catheterization procedures in children. BACKGROUND: The hands of interventional cardiologists receive high doses of radiation due to their proximity to the X-ray beam. Radiation attenuating gloves have about a 26% attenuation rate, but reduce dexterity and tactile sensation. The UltraBLOX™ cream is a new FDA-approved X-ray attenuating cream that can be applied to the operator's hands for radio-protection. METHODS: Two nanoDot™ dosimeters were secured side

Occupational Dermatitis among the Metal Working Fluid Factory Workers in Bengaluru - A Cross-Sectional Study.

CONTEXT: Metalworking fluids (MWFs) are complex oils used to protect the metal piece and the cutting tool from friction and wear out during the machining process. Direct contact of skin with MWF can lead to occupational dermatitis (O.D.). It is a local skin inflammation caused by occupational exposure to any substance at work leading to dryness, itching, redness, and wheals on the skin. Annually, 1.2 million metal workers are exposed to MWF, but there needs to be more research on them. AIMS: To determine the associated factors of O.D. among the MWF factory workers in Bengaluru. METHODS AND M

A Highly Permeable and Three-Dimensional Integrated Electronic System for Wearable Human-Robot Interaction.

Permeable electronics promise improved physiological comfort, but remain constrained by limited functional integration and poor mechanical robustness. Here, we report a three-dimensional (3D) permeable electronic system that overcomes these challenges by combining electrospun SEBS nanofiber mats, high-resolution liquid metal conductors patterned via thermal imprinting (50 μm), and a strain isolators (SIL) that protects vertical interconnects (VIAs) from stress concentration. This architecture achieves ultrahigh air permeability (> 5.09 mL cm-2 min-1), exceptional stretchability (750% fracture

OCCUPATIONAL CONTACT DERMATITIS AMONGST DENTISTS AND DENTAL TECHNICIANS.

Since the working medical personnel including dentists and dental technicians mainly use their hands, it is understandable that the most common occupational disease amongst medical personnel is contact dermatitis (CD) (80%-90% of cases). Development of occupational CD is caused by contact of the skin with various substances in occupational environment. Occupational etiologic factors for dental personnel are foremost reactions to gloves containing latex, followed by various dental materials (e.g., metals, acrylates), detergents, lubricants, solvents, chemicals, etc. Since occupational CD is rel

Cleanroom airborne particulate limits and 70% isopropyl alcohol: a lingering problem for pharmaceutical manufacturing?

Seventy percent isopropyl alcohol (70% IPA) in water for injection is extensively utilised within pharmaceutical cleanrooms for glove and surface disinfection. When supplied in pressurised containers and delivered as an aerosol, it has been demonstrated that large quantities of 70% IPA particles are generated that remain airborne for substantial periods of time. Within non-unidirectional airflow cleanroom areas, such particles are likely to be recorded by the particle monitoring system. Consequently, the derived operational limits for particles will almost certainly be at "artificially high" l
