BACKGROUND: Resistin and resistin-like molecule (RELM)beta comprise a novel class of cysteine-rich proteins secreted into the circulation implicated in hepatic insulin resistance and inflammation. RELMbeta is specifically produced by intestinal goblet cells but regulation of its expression and much of its local function are not elucidated. Airway inflammation and remodeling are cardinal features of asthma pathogenesis. Genome-wide association studies have shown that several SNPs of KCNJ2, a member of the inwardly rectifying potassium channel family, are associated with asthma in patients. However, the role of KCNJ2 in airway inflammation and remodeling in asthma remains unknown. The impact of chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) on the olfactory mucosa (OM) is dramatic. Cellular profiles and epithelial integrity in OM biopsies were evaluated using histological and immunohistochemical methods to define a strategy for future histological studies of CRS. 12 patients with Crohn's disease (CD) and 9 with ulcerative colitis (UC) affecting the colon were studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The macroscopically unaffected mucosa was distorted in both diseases by irregularities in the normal polygonal units. The individual absorptive cells were disorganized, having lost their pentagonal-hexagonal cell borders. In 7 cases of CD an increase of goblet cells was seen. This report is the first characterization of the histology and ultrastructure of the barred owl conjunctiva. The inferior eyelid was dominated by a large disk-shaped plate covered by a non-keratinized stratified squamous or cuboidal epithelium of variable thickness. BACKGROUND: Mixed adenoneuroendocrine carcinoma is a rare tumor recently recognized as a new category in the last World Health Organization (WHO) classification of appendiceal tumors (2010). This term has been proposed to designate carcinomas of the appendix that arise by progression from a pre-existing goblet cell carcinoid. Mixed adenoneuroendocrine carcinomas are more aggressive tumors than typical goblet cell carcinoids and usually present with peritoneal spreading and ovarian masses. Staging, some histological features, and completeness of surgery are factors that determine its evolution.

Conjunctival biopsy specimens from patients with Bitot's spot responsive and nonresponsive to vitamin A were studied by light and electron microscopy. In both types, the lesions demonstrated keratinization with granular cells, irregular maturation, inflammatory infiltration of the conjunctival substantia propria, and loss of goblet cells. OBJECTIVE: To estimate the predictable value of histopathologic parameters in chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP) after endoscopic sinus surgery(ESS).
METHOD: Symptomatology was rated in 53 patients 12 to 24 months after ESS. Specimens taken during the surgical procedure were examined and scored for eosinophils, goblet cells, lymphocytes, subepithelial thickening, subepithelial edema and submucous gland formation.
