Talon cannulated compression device as an alternative in the fixation of acetabulum posterior column fractures: A biomechanical study.

To compare the amount of displacement and rigidity at the fracture line under static & dynamic axial loading and torsional stress of conventional cannulated screw (CS), plate screw fixation including inter-fragmentary screw (PL), and talon cannulated compression device or talon screw in other words (TS) in posterior column fracture models. Synthetic hemipelvis bone models presenting a posterior column fracture were used in this study. Group PL, CS, and TS were created with ten bone models prepared for each group for dynamic and static loading tests and another ten for torsional tests. Rigidity

Fluctuating Immune Reconstitution and Delayed HIV-1 DNA Decline in People Living with HIV with Low CD4 on Bictegravir-Based Therapy.

This prospective cohort study compared the efficacy of bictegravir/emtricitabine/tenofovir alafenamide (BIC/FTC/TAF) and tenofovir/lamivudine/efavirenz (TLE) regimens in 88 treatment-naïve persons living with HIV. The BIC regimen achieved faster HIV-1 RNA suppression at week 12, with comparable suppression thereafter. Regarding HIV-1 DNA, the TLE group exhibited a more rapid decline, largely attributable to its higher baseline levels, while both groups converged to comparable levels at week 48; this difference was no longer significant after adjusting for baseline HIV-1 DNA levels. Notably, th

Dynamics of humoral response in naturally-infected cattle after vaccination against leptospirosis.

Vaccination is one of the most important measures for the control of bovine leptospirosis. Despite the broad usage of vaccination against leptospirosis in cattle worldwide, the dynamics of the post-vaccine immune response remain controversial and many aspects are still unclear, particularly in naturally-infected animals. Thus, the objective of this study is to describe the dynamics of humoral response in naturally-infected cattle after vaccination against leptospirosis. A total of 162 cows were studied, consisting of 129 included in the experimental group (G1), and subdivided into two groups,

Greater disruption to control of voluntary saccades in autistic disorder than Asperger's disorder: evidence for greater cerebellar involvement in autism?

It remains unclear whether autism and Asperger's disorder (AD) exist on a symptom continuum or are separate disorders with discrete neurobiological underpinnings. In addition to impairments in communication and social cognition, motor deficits constitute a significant clinical feature in both disorders. It has been suggested that motor deficits and in particular the integrity of cerebellar modulation of movement may differentiate these disorders. We used a simple volitional saccade task to comprehensively profile the integrity of voluntary ocular motor behaviour in individuals with high functi

Fetal hydronephrosis: selection and surgical repair.

Newly developed diagnostic techniques allowed us to select a fetus with potentially reversible renal damage from the usually fatal group with bilateral hydronephrosis and severe oligohydramnios early in gestation. Fetal surgery to marsupialize the fetal bladder at 24 weeks gestation restored normal amniotic fluid dynamics and allowed sufficient pulmonary and renal development to insure survival after delivery near term.

Degenerative lumbar scoliosis in elderly patients: dynamic stabilization without fusion versus posterior instrumented fusion.

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Posterolateral fusion with pedicle screw instrumentation is currently the most widely accepted technique for degenerative lumbar scoliosis in elderly patients. However, a high incidence of complications has been reported in most series. Dynamic stabilization without fusion in patients older than 60 years has not previously been compared with the use of posterior fusion in degenerative lumbar scoliosis. PURPOSE: To compare dynamic stabilization without fusion and posterior instrumented fusion in the treatment of degenerative lumbar scoliosis in elderly patients, in terms of

Infraslow Dynamic Patterns in Human Cortical Networks Track a Spectrum of External to Internal Attention.

Early efforts to understand the human cerebral cortex focused on localization of function, assigning functional roles to specific brain regions. More recent evidence depicts the cortex as a dynamic system, organized into flexible networks with patterns of spatiotemporal activity corresponding to attentional demands. In functional MRI (fMRI), dynamic analysis of such spatiotemporal patterns is highly promising for providing non-invasive biomarkers of neurodegenerative diseases and neural disorders. However, there is no established neurotypical spectrum to interpret the burgeoning literature of

Emotional face processing across neurodevelopmental disorders: a dynamic faces study in children with autism spectrum disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is classically associated with poor face processing skills, yet evidence suggests that those with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) also have difficulties understanding emotions. We determined the neural underpinnings of dynamic emotional face processing across these three clinical paediatric groups, including developmental trajectories, compared with typically developing (TD) controls. We studied 279 children, 5-19 years of age but 57 were excluded due to excessive motion in fMRI, leaving 222: 87 ASD, 44 ADHD

Influence of Textured Insoles on Dynamic Postural Balance of Young Dancers.

BACKGROUND: Postural balance (PB) is a significant factor in dance performance and injury prevention. We aimed to determine whether the use of textured insoles inserted into casual walking shoes of dancers improved their dynamic PB and whether dancers with previous injury manifested different dynamic PB compared with non-injured dancers. METHODS: In this crossover design study, 26 ballet dancers from the Australian Ballet School, aged 14-19 yrs, were divided into two groups matched by sex and class levels. Group 1 wore the textured insoles in their walking shoes for at least 2 hrs/day during

Disease-Associated Mutations Impact DNA Methyltransferase 1 Function through Dynamic Allosteric Effects and Solvent Exposure.

Mutations in the DNA methyltransferase 1 (DNMT1) enzyme can lead to neurodegenerative diseases, including autosomal dominant cerebellar ataxia-deafness and neuropathy (ADCA-DN) and hereditary sensory and autonomic neuropathy type 1E (HSAN1E). The impact of these mutations on the structural dynamics of DNMT1 remains largely unknown. Here, we present an extensive molecular dynamics investigation of wild-type (WT) DNMT1 and its mutants associated with ADCA-DN (A554V, G589A, and V590F) and HSAN1E (D490E-P491Y and Y495C). The first group of mutants increases structural flexibility and disrupts the

Impact of obstructive sleep apnea on sleep cycles and spindle dynamics: A polysomnographic study.

Sleep spindles and the temporal organization of sleep are essential for restorative and cognitive functions, yet their disruption in obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) remains poorly understood. This study examined spindle density and duration across sleep cycles in 30 OSA patients and 22 controls using full-night polysomnography. While total sleep time and stage proportions were similar between groups, sleep efficiency and arousal index worsened with OSA severity. Spindle duration in N2 was significantly reduced in moderate OSA, particularly at frontal sites, with a Group × Cycle interaction indic

The Vibrational Signature of Alzheimer's Disease: A Computational Approach Based on Sonification, Laser Projection, and Computer Vision Analysis.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most prevalent form of dementia, and accessible biomarkers for early detection remain limited. This study introduces a biomimetic approach in which brain electrical activity is transformed into sound and vibration, emulating natural sensory encoding mechanisms. Resting-state EEG recordings from 36 AD patients and 29 healthy controls were averaged by group, directly sonified, and used to drive a membrane-laser system that projected dynamic vibrational patterns. This transformation mirrors how biological systems convert electrical signals into sensory representati

The Influence of Low and Moderate Carotid Stenosis on Neurophysiologic Status of Patients Undergoing on-pump Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting.

BACKGROUND: Significant (>70%) extracranial stenosis of the internal carotid artery (ICA) is a known risk factor for brain damage in patients with coronary heart disease (CHD) undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). There is no clear evidence of the low and moderate ICA stenoses influence on the neurophysiologic status of patients after CABG. This work was aimed at studying the influence ICA stenoses (<50%) on the dynamics of neurophysiologic status in patients undergone CABG. METHODS: We examined neurophysiologic functions and electroencephalograph in CHD patients (N = 45) aged fr
