Pelvic inflammatory disease in the United States. Incidence and trends in private practice.

The National Ambulatory Care Survey, conducted by the National Center for Health Statistics (Rockville, Md.), provides national estimates for conditions diagnosed by office-based private practitioners in the United States. The Venereal Disease Control Division of the Centers for Disease Control (Atlanta, Ga.) obtained data from the National Ambulatory Care Survey for the years 1973-1976 and analyzed the epidemiology of pelvic inflammatory disease in women who sought care from private physicians. More that 7.5 million office visits for pelvic inflammatory disease were made over the four-year pe

Resting metabolic rate variability as influenced by mouthpiece and noseclip practice procedures.

Mouthpiece and noseclip introduction affect resting physiologic function (i.e., hyperventilation, anxiety), which can influence a resting metabolic rate measurement. It also is obvious that practice is required to minimize this influence when such apparatuses are used. However, the type of practice that best minimizes this influence has not been established. To determine the effect of acute and longer term practice on measurement variability of resting metabolic rate, 27 healthy, premenopausal women were randomly assigned to one of three groups: (1) a practice group, involving three 10-minute

Changes in movement transitions across a practice period in childhood apraxia of speech.

This study examined changes in speech motor control across a movement transition between sounds within a motor learning task in children with apraxia of speech (CAS) and typical development (TD). It was investigated whether oral articulator movement was refined with practice and whether practice gains generalized to words not included in the practice session. A total of 16 children (ages 5-6) with CAS (n = 8) and TD (n = 8) participated in this study. Novel and real word tokens were produced at three time points. Kinematic data was collected using facial motion tracking at each time point. Chi

Early exposure, enduring consequences: How do I manage Rh immunoglobulin prophylaxis after Rh-mismatched transfusions in children?

BACKGROUND: RhD mismatched transfusions in RhD negative women have the potential to impact future pregnancies through alloimmunization and development of hemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn (HDFN). As use of RhD positive emergency-release blood products in pediatric trauma has increased, it has become clear that a significant alloimmunization risk also exists for RhD negative girls, which has not been addressed by existing literature. This article describes a best-practice guideline to manage RhD negative pediatric females who receive RhD positive transfusions. DESIGN: Pathology or tra

Transfusion of D+ red blood cells to D- individuals in trauma situations.

To conserve D- red blood cells (RBCs), our facility developed a policy for transfusion of D+ units to D- patients, particularly in trauma situations. To our knowledge, this is the first study looking at D-mismatched RBC transfusion in trauma patients. We developed guidelines for the transfusion of D-mismatched RBCs. patients were followed by anti body screening and direct antiglobulin testing. Twenty-six patients were identified, and 57.7 percent of the cases were the result of trauma. Follow-up ranged from 7 to 455 days. The trauma cohort had a follow-up of 7 to 102 days. Overall, patients we

Temporal Spacing of Practice and Tennis Serve Retention in Recreational Players.

The temporal organization of practice is a key factor in applied motor learning, particularly in recreational sport contexts where training time and recovery opportunities are constrained. This study examined the effects of short-rest versus long-rest practice schedules on the acquisition and retention of the tennis serve in recreational youth players. Twenty-four players (11.8 ± 1.6 years) were randomly assigned to a Short-Rest group (0 s between trials, 10 s between series, consecutive-day sessions) or a Long-Rest group (10 s between trials, 30 s between series, nonconsecutive-day sessions).
