In Papua New Guinea (PNG), the most common cause of death among children under 5 years of age is pneumonia. Children with severe pneumonia need antibiotics and oxygen but oxygen shortages are common owing to the cost and complex logistics of transporting it in cylinders. Detection of hypoxaemia using clinical signs can be difficult, especially in highly pigmented children in whom cyanosis is difficult to recognise. We have evaluated the efficacy of voriconazole (VRC) in a systemic infection by Trichosporon asahii in immunosuppressed guinea pigs. VRC was more effective than amphotericin B in prolonging survival and reducing tissue burden. The best results were obtained with VRC at 10 mg/kg of body weight/day.

We report data on 110 children aged <15 years diagnosed with leukaemia during two periods covering 13.25 years. The data sets were consistent. The reported incidence of leukaemia was low. Only 34 (31%) of the children were diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) compared with 54 (49%) children with acute myeloid leukaemia (AML). The overall mean (SD) age was 6.6 (3.5) years, 6.1 (3.5) for ALL and 6.9 (3.5) for AML. There was no evidence of an early childhood peak of ALL. Eighteen cases of confirmed AIDS with cryptococcal meningitis in Bata Regional Hospital, Equatorial Guinea from January 1997 to November 1999 were analysed. The associated morbidity and mortality rates were very high. Contributory factors were the failure to note the occurrence of AIDS with cryptococcal meningitis, late presentation, serious illness and severe complications, and delayed and inadequate therapy.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the changes of the activity of tryptase of sera, lungs and bronchial tubes in the guinea-pigs which suffered from hetero-serum anaphylactic shock.
METHODS: Sera and tissues were collected from anaphylactic shock guinea-pigs, and the enzyme activity was tested colormetrically using special substrate, BAPNA.
RESULTS: The activity of tryptase of sera, lungs and bronchial tubes increased significantly in Anaphylactic guinea-pigs compared with control group.
CONCLUSION: The changes of tryptase activity are helpful to diagnose anaphylactic shock.

A yellow fever epidemic erupted in Guinea in September, 2000. From Sept 4, 2000, to Jan 7, 2001, 688 instances of the disease and 225 deaths were reported. The diagnosis was laboratory confirmed by IgM detection in more than 40 patients. A mass vaccination campaign was limited by insufficient international stocks. After the epidemic in Guinea, the International Coordinating Group on Vaccine Provision for Epidemic Meningitis Control decided that 2 million doses of 17D yellow fever vaccine, being stored as part of a UNICEF stockpile, should be used only in response to outbreaks.
