Effects of Labrador Tea, Peppermint, and Winter Savory Essential Oils on Fusobacterium nucleatum.

Bad breath or halitosis is an oral condition caused by volatile sulfur compounds (VSC) produced by bacteria found in the dental and tongue biofilms. Fusobacterium nucleatum is a Gram-negative anaerobic bacterium that has been strongly associated with halitosis. In this study, essential oils (EO) from three plants, Labrador tea (Rhododendron groenlandicum [Oeder] Kron & Judd), peppermint (Mentha x piperita L.), and winter savory (Satureja montana L.), were investigated for their effects on growth, biofilm formation and killing, and VSC production by F. nucleatum. Moreover, their biocompatibilit…

From Biofilm to Breath: The Role of Lacticaseibacillus paracasei ET-22 Postbiotics in Combating Oral Malodor.

Previous studies demonstrated that sufferers with halitosis can be significantly improved with Lacticaseibacillus paracasei ET-22 (ET-22) postbiotics intervention. The objectives of this investigation were to identify the primary components responsible for inhibiting oral malodor. This study demonstrated that cell-free supernatants (CFSs) were more effective in inhibiting production of volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs). Untargeted metabolomics identified CFSs as primarily consisting of organic acids, lipids, peptides, and nucleotides. Among the potential active components, phenyllactic acid (PL…

Inhibitory effect of Lactococcus lactis on the bioactivity of periodontopathogens.

Lactococcus lactis is a probiotic bacterium that produces various bacteriocins. Periodontopathogens induce inflammation and halitosis through the actions of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and trypsin-like enzymes. The purpose of this study was to investigate the inhibitory effects of L. lactis on the bioactivity of periodontopathogens. To investigate the antimicrobial peptide of L. lactis, the spent culture medium (SCM) of L. lactis was treated with or without proteinase K after collection by centrifugation, and the antibacterial activity of SCM against periodontopathogens was assessed. To evaluate …

Antimicrobial activity of Streptococcus salivarius K12 on bacteria involved in oral malodour.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the antimicrobial activity of the bacteriocin-producing strain Streptococcus salivarius K12 against several bacteria involved in halitosis. DESIGN: The inhibitory activity of S. salivarius K12 against Solobacterium moorei CCUG39336, four clinical S. moorei isolates, Atopobium parvulum ATCC33793 and Eubacterium sulci ATCC35585 was examined by a deferred antagonism test. Eubacterium saburreum ATCC33271 and Parvimonas micra ATCC33270, which have been tested in previous studies, served as positive controls, and the Gram-negative strain Bacteroides fragilis ZIB2800 served…

Patients' self-assessment of oral malodour and its relationship with organoleptic scores and oral conditions.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to compare patients' self-rating of oral malodour with organoleptic evaluation and to relate them to oral conditions. METHODS: One hundred and eighty systemically healthy patients with a primary complaint of oral malodour participated in this cross-sectional study. They were asked to complete a questionnaire regarding family and social discomfort and type of halitosis complaint, and to score the degree of their own oral malodour. The quality of the mouth air was assessed organoleptically by a calibrated odour judge. Odour-judge scores and self-assessments…

The association between clinical oral health status and oral impacts experienced by older individuals in Sri Lanka.

The aim of this study was to determine the association between clinical oral status and oral impacts experienced by older individuals in Sri … number of teeth with third degree mobility and the OHIP score. Also those who wore dentures and had halitosis had significantly higher OHIP scores than those who did not wear dentures and did not have halitosis. Logistic regression analysis revealed that 'wearing denture' and 'having halitosis' were significant predictors of the OHIP score. In conclusion, t …

Self-perception of breath odor.

BACKGROUND: Bad breath, also known as halitosis, is a common concern for millions of people. Yet there is almost no reliable way for people to properly assess their breath odor. While many develop faulty perceptions about having bad breath that affect their entire lives, others who have halitosis are unaware of their condition. OVERVIEW: The authors discuss the issues affecting self-perception of breath odor in patients who complain of halitosis, as well as in a more general, "noncomplaining" population. The article presents self-perception of breath odor as a multifactorial, psychophysiologi…

Effect of hyperbaric oxygen therapy on diabetes-related oral complications.

BACKGROUND: Diabetes Mellitus is a chronic disease characterized by uncontrolled blood sugar levels, which lead to end-organ damage. While t … d unstimulated saliva pH, buffering capacity, flow rate, and subjective symptoms such as dry mouth, halitosis, taste loss, difficulty swallowing, and clinical examination findings before HBO2 and after the 21st session. RESULTS: Upon comparing the findings, we observed a significant decrease in dry mouth and halitosis, periodontal disease severity, and hea …

Oral medicine--update for the dental practitioner: oral malodour.

This series provides an overview of current thinking in the more relevant areas of oral medicine for primary care practitioners, written by the authors while they were holding the Presidencies of the European Association for Oral Medicine and the British Society for Oral Medicine, respectively. A book containing additional material will be published. The series gives the detail necessary to assist the primary dental clinical team caring for patients with oral complaints that may be seen in general dental practice. Space precludes inclusion of illustrations of uncommon or rare disorders, or dis

Battling bad breath: a new approach to an old problem.

Bad breath plagues millions of people in the US. Because breath malodor is viewed as a social, not medical, condition, bad breath usually is not part of dental school curriculums. Desperate halitosis sufferers looking for help are turning to the dental profession for answers.
