Programme for prevention of foot dermatoses in patients with work-related skin diseases: Baseline data and first results of a prospective cohort study (OCCUPES).

BACKGROUND: Programmes for prevention of hand dermatoses in patients with work-related skin diseases (WRSD) are well established. Similar interventions for foot dermatoses (FD) are widely missing. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effectiveness of a programme for prevention of FD based on health education in patients with WRSD while investigating the impact and possible causative factors of FD. METHODS: In a prospective cohort study (OCCUPES), 231 patients with WRSD and FD participating in the programme were recruited. The skin was examined and questionnaires were completed, including assessment of…

Neutrophilic dermatoses: a broad spectrum of disease.

The neutrophilic dermatoses (NDs) comprise a group of heterogeneous disorders characterized by inflammatory skin lesions that histologically show an intense inflammatory infiltrate composed primarily by neutrophils, with no evidence of infection or vasculitis. Although there are distinct clinical differences in the classical lesions of these disorders, many patients have overlapping features. In this review, we describe the clinical aspects of the main NDs, including: Sweet Syndrome, ND of the dorsal hands, pyoderma gangrenosum, erythema elevatum diutinum, subcorneal pustular dermatosis, neutr

The Use of Apremilast in Psoriasis: A Delphi Study.

BACKGROUND: Experience in the use of apremilast in clinical practice complements the information available from pivotal clinical trials. MATERIAL AND METHOD: Following a review of the literature, a panel of dermatologists with expertise in the management of psoriasis considered 5 scenarios in which the evidence supporting the use of apremilast to treat moderate psoriasis is insufficient or controversial. These scenarios were then assessed using a Delphi questionnaire. RESULTS: Consensus was reached on 96 (67%) of the 143 items (positive in 85 and negative in 11). The therapeutic goal for apr

Pellagra associated with esophageal carcinoma and alcoholism.

Pellagra is a nutritional disease caused by the deficiency of niacin. It presents with a photodistributed rash, gastrointestinal symptoms, and neuropsychiatric disturbances. In the Western world, this disease is mostly confined to alcoholics or the impoverished. However, this condition must be recognized in other clinical settings because it is easily treated and can be fatal if not identified. We describe a case of pellagra caused by esophageal carcinoma and alcoholism; we also review the literature.

Management of Atopic Hand Dermatitis.

Atopic hand dermatitis (AHD), a manifestation of atopic dermatitis, can have a profound negative effect on a patient's disease-related quality of life due to its visibility, chronic nature, and overall discomfort that it causes. AHD differs from other forms of chronic hand eczema due to its likely distinct, complex pathogenesis, which is a combination of environmental triggers, genetic predisposition, and immune dysfunction. A proper diagnosis of AHD is made through clinical evaluation and the ability to establish subtle clinical differences between AHD and other conditions. Diagnosis is the f

Dermatophytes and skin dermatophytoses in Southeast Asia-First epidemiological survey from Cambodia.

BACKGROUND: Dermatomycoses count to the most frequent dermatoses in Cambodia. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this survey was to investigate the occurrence of dermatophytes in this Southeast Asian country. METHODS: From June 2017 to July 2018, skin scrapings were taken from 67 patients with superficial dermatophytosis for mycological diagnostics. Identification of dermatophytes was confirmed by sequencing of the 'internal transcribed spacer'-(ITS) region of the rDNA, and the gene of the Translation Elongation Factor (TEF)-1α. RESULTS: Patients were suffering from tinea corporis and tinea inguinalis/

The Early Report of Herpetic Whitlow by Bahal-Dawlah Razi in 15th Century CE.

A herpetic whitlow is a lesion (whitlow) on a finger or thumb caused by herpes simplex virus. It is a painful infection that typically affects the fingers or thumbs. Occasionally infection occurs on the toes or on the nail cuticle. Symptoms of herpetic whitlow include tenderness, swelling and reddening of the infected finger skin, fever and swollen lymph nodes. Although, it is believed that the first recorded observations were in 1909 CE by H. G. Adamson, in the medieval period, Bah?' al-Dawlah N?rbakhsh? Onychomycosis due to Achaetomium strumarium.

Onychomycosis is the most common infection of the toe-nails or finger-nails and it may be caused by a large variety of fungal species. Achaetomium species which belong to the phylum Ascomycota (Family Chaetomiaceae), are usually soil saprophytes or endophytic fungi which have been rarely reported as human or animal pathogens. Here, we report a case of onychomycosis caused by Achaetomium strumarium in a healthy person who showed involvement of all fingers of both hands with yellowish brown discoloration. The causative agent isolated was identified as Achaetomium species by morphology, colony mo

The association of smoking with contact dermatitis and hand eczema - a review.

Given the high prevalence of allergic contact dermatitis (ACD), irritant contact dermatitis (ICD), hand eczema (HE), and smoking, and the impact that smoking has on skin disease, the authors reviewed the existing literature to assess the association between smoking and contact dermatitis or hand eczema. Using the PubMed and SCOPUS databases, a literature search identified articles related to allergic contact dermatitis, irritant contact dermatitis, and hand eczema and a possible association with smoking. The search period included articles prior to and including April 2016. Seven of eight arti

Hyperkeratotic and hypertrophic lichen nitidus.

Lichen nitidus typically presents as shiny pin-head sized papules on the trunk and extremities, often affecting children and young adults. In this prototypical form, it rarely presents a diagnostic challenge being characterized by distinctive clinical and histopathologic findings. We describe a rare variant of lichen nitidus, which we term "hyperkeratotic and hypertrophic lichen nitidus."
