Contact hypersensitivity (CHS) is a form of delayed-type hypersensitivity triggered by the response to reactive haptens (sensitization) and subsequent challenge (elicitation). Here, we show that ASK1 promotes CHS and that suppression of ASK1 during the elicitation phase is sufficient to attenuate CHS. The antigenicity of rokitamycin (TMS-19-Q, TMS) was studied. Rabbits and mice were repeatedly challenged with TMS emulsified with adjuvant to be strongly immunized. Neither IgG nor IgE antibodies were, however, detected in serum from these animals when assayed by PCA and PHA reactions. Furthermore, guinea pigs immunized with TMS together with Freund's complete adjuvant did not exhibit any systemic anaphylactic reactions when elicited with TMS alone. Increased lymphocyte transformation (LT) responses have been observed in Yersinia infections both against the causative bacterium and against other enterobacteria. The responses of patients with reactive arthritis are lower than those of non-arthritic patients. We have now studied the LT responses against several gram negative bacteria and against a pair of enterobacterial common antigen (ECA) positive and ECA negative Salmonella typhimurium strains in patients after Yersinia or Salmonella infection.
