STUDY OBJECTIVE: This study estimates trends in impairment before and after the 1992 California Mandatory Helmet Use Law using the injury impairment Scale (IIS).
METHODS: We linked medical records and police reports for a cohort of 4,790 nonfatally injured motorcycle riders who crashed between January 1, 1991, and December 31, 1993, and were treated for injuries in 1 of 18 hospitals in 10 California counties. All injuries were coded according to the Abbreviated Injury Scale and matched to corresponding codes in the IIS. The IIS provides an estimate of the likelihood of impairment from any giv

Although the traumatic injury death rate in the United States decreased during the last 20 years, the percent of all injury deaths attributable to brain injuries has remained steady. Head injuries are a leading cause of injury among motorcycle riders in crashes, and the helmet is an effective measure to reduce these injuries. To reduce the burden and cost of motorcycle injuries, many states have increased helmet use by introducing mandatory helmet legislation. This report presents evidence on the effects of the motorcycle helmet and helmet use legislation--two interrelated prevention strategie

Each year, 320 000 people die from occupational injuries. The construction sector is one of the most hazardous sectors, showing a high incidence of workplace fatalities, of which many are caused by traumatic head injuries. In this study, the efficiency of construction helmets has been investigated through an in-depth accident reconstruction of a real-world workplace head trauma, aiming to investigate causation, prevention and liabilities in an ongoing police investigation. The accident was reconstructed with a state-of-the-art subject-specific head model, used to predict the skull fracture and

BACKGROUND: Endoscopic strip craniectomy (ESC) with postoperative helmet molding is an accepted treatment for sagittal craniosynostosis. Barrel stave osteotomies (BSO) with immediate greenstick outfracture can be added to ESC for immediate cranial expansion. BSO is hypothesized to improve cranial remodeling, but its benefits and complications remain debated. This study compares operative and morphologic outcomes in patients with sagittal craniosynostosis treated with ESC with and without BSO.
METHODS: A retrospective review of patients with isolated sagittal craniosynostosis treated with endo

BACKGROUND: The use of personal mobility devices (PMDs) in daily life has significantly increased in France over the past two decades. These devices, popular both as a mode of transportation-especially among adolescents-and as a source of leisure or physical activity, are not without risk. The hypothesis of our study was to assess the dangers associated with PMDs in the pediatric population.
OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to describe the epidemiology of non-fatal injuries related to the use of both motorized and non-motorized PMDs in children treated in the emergency department of our

BACKGROUND: China implemented the 'One Helmet, One Belt' road safety campaign in April 2020 to improve helmet use among cyclists and motorcyclists. We evaluated its long-term effect.
METHODS: We analysed crash data from 379 media sources that reported at least one road traffic crash per quarter between January 2019 and September 2024, as indexed by the Automated Road Traffic Crash Data Platform. The proportion of media-reported crashes involving helmeted motorcyclists and cyclists was compared before and after implementation of the national campaign. We calculated adjusted (aORs) using logist

Postoperative helmet therapy (PHT) is commonly utilized after endoscopic craniosynostosis repair to guide cranial reshaping and symmetry. Our institution routinely offers PHT to patients undergoing open calvarial vault remodeling (CVR) with unicoronal and lambdoid craniosynostosis. This study aims to determine if PHT is effective in improving residual asymmetry after open CVR for patients with unicoronal or lambdoid synostosis. Patients with non-syndromic craniosynostosis who underwent open CVR+PHT between 2016 and 2023 were reviewed retrospectively. Suture types with <4 cases were excluded. P

BACKGROUND: Motorcycle crashes are a major source of road traffic deaths in northern Ghana. Helmet use has been low. The last time it was formally assessed (2010), helmet use was 30.0% (34.2% for riders and 1.9% for pillion riders). We sought to determine the current prevalence of helmet use and its associated factors among motorcyclists in northern Ghana.
METHODS: Cross-sectional observations of motorcycle helmet use were conducted among 3853 motorcycle riders and 1097 pillion riders in the Northern Region at 12 different locations near intersections, roundabouts and motorcycle bays. Modifie

OBJECTIVE: Bicycle helmet use has repeatedly been shown to protect riders from serious injury. Despite this, a majority of children and adolescents do not regularly wear helmets. Our primary objective was to determine if an emergency department (ED)-based helmet distribution program could increase the amount of time children report wearing helmets.
METHODS: This was a prospective cohort study of children aged 3 to 17 years presenting to the ED of an urban, tertiary care hospital. Participants were surveyed on their helmet use habits and perceptions regarding the efficacy and importance of hel

This study explores e-scooter riders' risky behaviour and motivation based on survey, observation, and interview studies. 192 responses from an online survey showed that e-scooter riders' behaviours are categorised into errors, violations, defensive behaviour, and proactive safety behaviour. Statistical analysis revealed significant differences in riding behaviour depending on riders' characteristics and usage patterns. Results from the observation and survey study showed a high frequency of risky behaviours such as not wearing a helmet, riding on the sidewalk against traffic flow, or riding w

BACKGROUND: Electric bikes and scooters are becoming popular means of short-distance transportation in major cities. Regulations for safe riding established by ride-sharing companies and local governments have not been effectively implemented. Inner-city hospitals are at the frontline of receiving traumas related to e-bikes and e-scooters and are receiving an increasing number of injuries. The works of literature reporting these injuries are limited.
METHOD: This study reviewed all the trauma activations at a major trauma center in NYC from 04/2019 to 08/2021. Patients with e-bike and e-scoot

BACKGROUND: The reasons for the increase in accidents involving shared stand-up e-scooters in recent years may be the wide-spread use of e-scooters among young people, especially in metropolitan areas with heavy traffic, non-compliance with traffic rules, and insufficient legal regulations. In this study, we analyzed in detail the typical features of rider-sharing e-scooter-related injuries brought to the emergency department of our hospital in the light of current literature.
METHODS: The clinical and accident characteristics of 60 patients with surgical requirements who were brought to the

Rotational acceleration of the head is a principal cause of concussion and traumatic brain injury. Several rotation-damping systems for helmets have been introduced to better protect the brain from rotational forces. But these systems have not been evaluated in snow sport helmets. This study investigated two snow sport helmets with different rotation-damping systems, termed MIPS and WaveCel, in comparison to a standard snow sport helmet without a rotation-damping system. Impact performance was evaluated by vertical drops of a helmeted Hybrid III head and neck onto an oblique anvil. Six impact

To elucidate patterns of and risk factors for acute traumatic injuries in climbers in need of professional rescue, a retrospective evaluation was performed of the Austrian National Registry of Mountain Accidents regarding rock climbing incidents over a 13-year timeframe from 2005 to 2018. From 2992 recorded incidents, 1469 were uninjured but in need of recovery, mainly when alpine climbing. Acute traumatic injuries (n = 1217) were often classified as severe (UIAA ≥ 3; n = 709), and commonly involved fractures (n = 566). Main injury causes were falls (n = 894) frequently preceded by rockfall (n

Motorcycle crashes result in a significant health burden, including many fatal injuries and serious non-fatal head injuries. Helmets are highly effective in preventing such trauma, and jurisdictions that require helmet use of all motorcyclists have higher rates of helmet use and lower rates of head injuries among motorcyclists. The current study examines helmet use and characteristics of helmeted operators and their riding conditions in Michigan, following a weakening of the state's universal motorcycle helmet use law in April 2012. Data on police-reported crashes occurring during 2012-14 and

There is some controversy regarding the effectiveness of helmets in preventing head injuries among cyclists. Epidemiological, experimental and computer simulation studies have suggested that helmets do indeed have a protective effect, whereas other studies based on epidemiological data have argued that there is no evidence that the helmet protects the brain. The objective of this study was to evaluate the protective effect of a helmet in single bicycle accident reconstructions using detailed finite element simulations. Strain in the brain tissue, which is associated with brain injuries, was re
