[Security agents on the front line against Ebola: roles, perceptions and knowledge in Fann Teaching Hospital, Dakar, Senegal].

Security agents are on the front line when patients arrive at health facilities, giving them a potential role to play in an Ebola virus disease (EVD) outbreak. The position of security agents within health services is poorly documented. A survey was conducted to clarify their understanding of Ebola pathology, to assess their need for information and to determine their role in patient management. The survey included both qualitative and quantitative aspects. 80 security agents of the Fann teaching hospital (Dakar) completed questionnaires, and 11 were interviewed. Qualitative analysis was perfo

Individualizing Care: Management Beyond Medical Therapy.

The evolving research landscape, with advances in the omics technologies, availability of large-scale patient cohorts, and forthcoming availability of novel drugs in primary biliary cholangitis (PBC), is creating a unique opportunity for developing a precision medicine (PM) program. PM has potential to change the paradigm of management. Diagnostic work-up of PBC patients may include information on genetic variants and molecular signature to define a particular subtype of disease and provide an estimate of treatment response and survival. To reach this point, specific interventions, such as seq

Reproductive health surveillance in zoo and wildlife medicine.

For over 25 years, the Reproductive Health Surveillance Program has collected, processed, evaluated, and archived reproductive tracts from nondomestic mammals submitted by zoos. The analysis of the data from this archive has been used to recognize lesions associated with exposure to certain contraceptives; but arguably more importantly, to also document naturally occurring lesions. The goals of this program are to enhance the reproductive management of captive and free-ranging species by providing information about the effects of various contraceptives and to provide basic information regardin

Competences to self-manage low back pain among care-seeking adolescents from general practice - a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: There is limited knowledge about when and how adolescents with low back pain (LBP) interact with health care providers. This limits our understanding of how to best help these young patients. This study aimed to understand when and how care-seeking adolescents with LBP interact with health care providers and which health literacy competencies and strategies do they use to self-managing their LBP. METHOD: Ten semi-structured interviews (duration 20-40 min) were conducted online among adolescents aged 15-18 with current or recent LBP (pain duration range; 9 months - 5 years). The in

The Web-Based Osteoarthritis Management Resource My Joint Pain Improves Quality of Care: A Quasi-Experimental Study.

BACKGROUND: Despite the availability of evidence-based guidelines for conservative treatment of osteoarthritis (OA), management is often confined to the use of analgesics and waiting for eventual total joint replacement. This suggests a gap in knowledge for persons with OA regarding the many different treatments available to them. OBJECTIVE: Our objective was to evaluate outcomes after usage of a Web-based resource called My Joint Pain that contains tailored, evidence-based information and tools aimed to improve self-management of OA on self-management and change in knowledge. METHODS: A qua

Cost-Effectiveness of Virtual Health Coaching for Caregivers of Patients With Heart Failure: Results From a Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Informal caregivers play an important role in heart failure care. Health coaching can effectively help informal caregivers adopt healthy lifestyles to prevent and control diseases. However, the cost-effectiveness of interventions that support them remains unclear. We compare the cost-effectiveness of a virtual health coaching intervention (Virtual Caregiver Coach for You) designed to support caregivers in managing their stress by promoting self-care practices versus health information alone for informal caregivers of patients with heart failure. METHODS: In this randomized control

Recognition and Management of Protracted Bacterial Bronchitis in Australian Aboriginal Children: A Knowledge Translation Approach.

BACKGROUND: Chronic wet cough in children is the hallmark symptom of protracted bacterial bronchitis (PBB) and if left untreated can lead to bronchiectasis, which is prevalent in Indigenous populations. Underrecognition of chronic wet cough by parents and clinicians and underdiagnosis of PBB by clinicians are known. RESEARCH QUESTION: We aimed to improve recognition and management of chronic wet cough in Aboriginal children using knowledge translation (KT), a methodologic approach that can be adapted for use in Indigenous contexts to facilitate effective and sustained translation of research

Using clinical simulation to evaluate a video telehealth consultation summary application.

Patients forget up to 80% of information conveyed during medical consultations. While clinicians may provide hand-written notes to patients during in-person appointments, such opportunities are limited in telehealth. Palliative care patients with complex information needs may benefit from consultation summaries. We developed a consultation summary application (CSA) to generate patient-facing summaries during video telehealth, in a palliative care context. Traditional research methods fall short in early identification and resolution of socio-technical factors, e.g., workflow compatibility, whi

How can we make self-sampling packs for sexually transmitted infections and bloodborne viruses more inclusive? A qualitative study with people with mild learning disabilities and low health literacy.

OBJECTIVES: 1.5 million people in the UK have mild to moderate learning disabilities. STIs and bloodborne viruses (BBVs) are over-represented in people experiencing broader health inequalities, which include those with mild learning disabilities. Self-managed care, including self-sampling for STIs/BBVs, is increasingly commonplace, requiring agency and health literacy. To inform the development of a partner notification trial, we explored barriers and facilitators to correct use of an STI/BBV self-sampling pack among people with mild learning disabilities. METHODS: Using purposive and conveni

Maternal antecedents of adiposity and studying the transgenerational role of hyperglycemia and insulin (MAASTHI): a prospective cohort study : Protocol of birth cohort at Bangalore, India.

BACKGROUND: India is experiencing an epidemic of obesity-hyperglycaemia, which coincides with child bearing age for women. The epidemic can be sustained and augmented through transgenerational transmission of adiposity and glucose intolerance in women. This presents an opportunity for exploring a clear strategy for the control of this epidemic in India. We conducted a study between November 2013 and May 2015 to inform the design of a large pregnancy cohort study. Based on the findings of this pilot, we developed the protocol for the proposed birth cohort of 5000 women, the recruitment for whic

The epidemiology of disasters.

Over the last few years there has been an increasing awareness that some kind of disaster management should be possible. The emphasis is now moving from post-disaster improvisation to predisaster preparedness. The League of Red Cross Societies has increasingly encouraged predisaster planning in countries at risk. A new United Nations agency - United Nations Disaster Relief Office (UNDRO)- has been set up with headquarters in Geneva. Coordination and exchange of information between agencies engaged in disaster relief are becoming the rule rather than the exception, and a number of groups have s
