Disparities of children's obesogenic environments in Louisiana.

BACKGROUND: Childhood obesity remains a pressing public health concern, with significant long-term implications for children's growth and development, as well as an increased risk for various diseases. In recent years, the obesity prevalence among children has shown a concerning rise, particularly in the Deep South (e.g., Louisiana) exhibiting higher rates compared to other regions of the United States. Meanwhile, environmental factors play a critical role in shaping children's health behaviors and outcomes. There has been an increasing body of research on the relation between obesogenic envir

Using Personas as a Tool for People-Centred Segmentation and Health Systems Planning in Ontario, Canada.

INTRODUCTION: Health systems are increasingly using population segmentation for planning to organise populations into segments with similar health characteristics. However, given that these data-driven approaches rely on available data, they fail to encompass important social determinants of health, thereby making decision-making challenging. Segmentation is powerful, but little is known about how missing information could be incorporated to more accurately characterise segments. DESCRIPTION: We demonstrate a process that uses personas [i.e., fictional stories] to apply the outputs of populat

Improved Real-Time Influenza Surveillance: Using Internet Search Data in Eight Latin American Countries.

BACKGROUND: Novel influenza surveillance systems that leverage Internet-based real-time data sources including Internet search frequencies, social-network information, and crowd-sourced flu surveillance tools have shown improved accuracy over the past few years in data-rich countries like the United States. These systems not only track flu activity accurately, but they also report flu estimates a week or more ahead of the publication of reports produced by healthcare-based systems, such as those implemented and managed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Previous work has shown

Operationalizing public health emergency operations centers in Somalia: a scoping review of challenges and strategies.

BACKGROUND: Public Health Emergency Operations Centers (PHEOCs) are central to national health security systems, enabling coordinated preparedness, surveillance, and response to public health emergencies. However, their operationalization remains particularly challenging in fragile and conflict-affected settings such as Somalia, where systemic constraints, governance fragmentation, and limited resources undermine emergency coordination capacity. This study aimed to systematically map the existing evidence on the challenges and strategies for operationalizing PHEOCs in Somalia and comparable fr

Regional Electronic Health Records in Denmark: Research Potential for Clinical Epidemiology.

Denmark has a well-established tradition of utilizing national registries for epidemiological research. Healthcare services in Denmark are managed by five administrative regions and documented in electronic health records (EHRs). While certain EHR data are mandatorily transferred to national registries, the national registries capture only a fraction of the information available within regional EHR systems. In this review, we describe and discuss the context, content, and research potential of regional EHR data in Denmark for observational studies and pragmatic clinical trials. Throughout, exa

Accuracy, potential, and limitations of probabilistic record linkage in identifying deaths by gender identity and sexual orientation in the state of Rio De Janeiro, Brazil.

BACKGROUND: Globally, the counting of deaths based on gender identity and sexual orientation has been a challenge for health systems. In most cases, non-governmental organizations have dedicated themselves to this work. Despite these efforts in generating information, the scarcity of official data presents significant limitations in policy formulation and actions guided by population needs. Therefore, this manuscript aims to evaluate the accuracy, potential, and limits of probabilistic data relationships to yield information on deaths according to gender identity and sexual orientation in the

Care coordination gaps due to lack of interoperability in the United States: a qualitative study and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Health information technology (HIT) could improve care coordination by providing clinicians remote access to information, improving legibility, and allowing asynchronous communication, among other mechanisms. We sought to determine, from a clinician perspective, how care is coordinated and to what extent HIT is involved when transitioning patients between emergency departments, acute care hospitals, skilled nursing facilities, and home health agencies in settings across the United States. METHODS: We performed a qualitative study with clinicians and information technology professi

Non-medical use of prescription opioids and prescription opioid-related harms: why so markedly higher in North America compared to the rest of the world?

AIMS: This paper aims to identify possible system-level factors contributing to the marked differences in the levels of non-medical prescription opioid use (NMPOU) and prescription opioid (PO)-related harms in North America (i.e. the United States and Canada) compared to other global regions. METHODS: Scientific literature and information related to relevant areas of health systems, policy and practice were reviewed and integrated. RESULTS: We identified several but different factors contributing to the observed differences. First, North American health-care systems consume substantially mor

Addressing Disparities in Diabetes Management Through Novel Approaches to Encourage Technology Adoption and Use.

Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is one of the nation's leading drivers of disability and health care utilization, with elevated prevalence among individuals with lower education, income, and racial/ethnic minorities. Health information technology (HIT) holds vast potential for helping patients, providers, and payers to address T2D and the skyrocketing rates of chronic illness and associated health care costs. Patient portals to electronic health records (EHRs) serve as a gateway to consumer use of HIT. We found that disparities in portal use portend growing T2D disparities. Little progress has been made

Safety-net Hospitals Face More Barriers Yet Use Fewer Strategies to Reduce Readmissions.

OBJECTIVE: US hospitals that care for vulnerable populations, "safety-net hospitals" (SNHs), are more likely to incur penalties under the Hospital Readmissions Reduction Program, which penalizes hospitals with higher-than-expected readmissions. Understanding whether SNHs face unique barriers to reducing readmissions or whether they underuse readmission-prevention strategies is important. DESIGN: We surveyed leadership at 1600 US acute care hospitals, of whom 980 participated, between June 2013 and January 2014. Responses on 28 questions on readmission-related barriers and strategies were comp

Improving paediatric immunisation coverage rates: a position paper of the European Academy of Paediatrics.

The European Academy of Paediatrics reaffirms its strong support for comprehensive childhood immunisation programmes. At a time when vaccine hesitancy, policy instability, and funding gaps threaten established achievements, public health policy must remain firmly grounded in scientific evidence, transparency, and ethical responsibility. Based on established evidence and current post-pandemic data, we urgently endorse Europe-wide harmonised surveillance systems for vaccine-preventable diseases, interoperable Immunisation Information Systems (IIS), and a Pan-European standard for digital vaccina
