Exploring HIV Risk Among Sexual Minority Women by Identity and Behavior in a Population-Based Sample of Low-Income Heterosexually Active Women.

Purpose: Research suggests that sexual minority women (SMW) face elevated HIV risk compared with their heterosexual counterparts. This study examined the association between sexual minority status-defined by identity and behavior-and HIV-related vulnerabilities among heterosexually active low-income women. Methods: This analysis used National HIV Behavioral Surveillance data (n = 5542) collected in 2019 from heterosexually active low-income women in 23 U.S. urban areas. We examined sexual minority identity and behavior and a set of substance use, sexual behavior, health and health care, and so

Trends and associated factors of late-stage HIV diagnosis among heterosexuals in the Netherlands between 2012 and 2022: An analysis of national surveillance data.

OBJECTIVES: Late-stage HIV diagnoses among heterosexuals remain a problem in Europe, yet little is known about its risk factors. We aimed to identify the trends and factors associated with late-stage HIV diagnosis among heterosexuals in the Netherlands. METHODS: We used national HIV surveillance data and included individuals diagnosed between 2012 and 2022, with heterosexual contact as the suspected transmission route. We applied descriptive statistics and logistic regression analyses. RESULTS: Of 1637 HIV diagnoses among heterosexuals, 932 (57%) were late-stage disease. The proportion of la

Antiretroviral therapy non-adherence and its association with psychosocial factors in Nigeria: comparative study of sexual minority and heterosexual men living with HIV.

Sexual minority men (gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men; SMM) in Nigeria are disproportionately affected by HIV compared to heterosexual men. There is a dearth of research on the correlates of antiretroviral therapy (ART) non-adherence and correlates in both groups. The current study examined the associations of ART non-adherence with sociodemographic and psychosocial characteristics among a sample of Nigerian heterosexual and SMM. Between March and September 2014, we surveyed 120 SMM and 108 heterosexual men receiving ART in Lagos and Abuja, Nigeria. We specified univariate and

Perceived social support in solo women seeking treatment with donor gametes and in women in heterosexual couples seeking IVF-treatment with own gametes.

Solo motherhood is a family constellation that is becoming increasingly common in high income countries. The demographic characteristics of solo women entering treatment with donated sperm or embryo have been shown to be different from that of cohabiting women. The general importance of perceived social support is frequently amplified when health and quality of life are concerned, and positively affects mental health status, experienced stress, perceived self-efficacy during the transition to parenthood and during parenthood itself. The objective of the present study was to compare demographic

Social and Structural Factors Associated with Sustained Viral Suppression Among Heterosexual Black Men with Diagnosed HIV in the United States, 2015-2017.

This paper describes sociodemographic, sexual risk behavior, and clinical care factors associated with sustained viral suppression (SVS) among heterosexual Black men with diagnosed HIV in the US. Sample was 968 men, 2015-2017 cycles of Medical Monitoring Project. We used prevalence ratios and a multivariable logistic regression model to identify independent predictors of SVS. About 9% of sexually active men had sex that carries a risk of HIV transmission. Nearly 2/3 lived at or below the poverty level, 13% were under or uninsured, 1/4 experienced food insecurity and 15% reported recent homeles

Sex differences in the incidence and clearance of anal human papillomavirus infection among heterosexual men and women in Liuzhou, China: An observational cohort study.

Anal cancer is primarily caused by human papillomavirus (HPV) infection in both men and women. However, little is known about the sex differences in the natural history of anal HPV infection in a heterosexual population. From May 2014 to March 2016, perianal/anal canal (PA) swab samples were collected semiannually from 2,302 heterosexual men and 2,371 heterosexual women aged 18-55 years old in Liuzhou, China. The specimens were genotyped for HPV DNA by polymerase chain reaction. The incidence rate ratio (IRR) and clearance rate ratio (CRR) were used to analyze the sex differences of incidence

Increased Methamphetamine, Injection Drug, and Heroin Use Among Women and Heterosexual Men with Primary and Secondary Syphilis - United States, 2013-2017.

During 2013-2017, the national annual rate of reported primary and secondary (P&S) syphilis cases in the United States increased 72.7%, from 5.5 to 9.5 cases per 100,000 population (1). The highest rates of P&S syphilis are seen among gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (collectively referred to as MSM) (2), and MSM continued to account for the majority of cases in 2017 (1). However, during 2013-2017, the P&S syphilis rate among women increased 155.6% (from 0.9 to 2.3 cases per 100,000 women), and the rate among all men increased 65.7% (from 10.2 to 16.9 cases per 100,000 men),

Motivations for a Casual or Occasional Sexual Encounter with a Man and/or Transgender Woman among Heterosexual Men: Toward a Better Understanding of Atypical Sexual Partnering.

Little is known about the motivations for an occasional sexual encounter with a man or a transgender woman among heterosexual men. This study employed qualitative methods to better understand occasional atypical sexual partnering. Open-ended interviews were conducted with 31 heterosexual men who reported at least one sexual encounter with a man or a transgender woman in the previous 12 months. Using the principles of Grounded Theory, three themes emerged: Participants were motivated by (1) the easy, uncomplicated nature of a sexual encounter with a man and/or a trans woman that often circumven

Investigating the Complex Relationship Between Intimate Partner Violence Victimization and Perpetration Among System-Involved Women in Heterosexual Relationships: An Exploratory Analysis.

Research indicates women who perpetrate intimate partner violence (IPV) experience both more frequent and more severe IPV victimization. However, the IPV field needs additional research to understand the complex relationship between various forms of IPV victimization (e.g., psychological, physical, sexual) and IPV perpetration by women. In particular, the field needs a better understanding of the unique interplay of various forms of IPV victimization and perpetration among female system-involved survivors (i.e., female survivors involved with child protective services and/or the court system a

Disparities in HIV-1 transmitted drug resistance detected by ultradeep sequencing between men who have sex with men and heterosexual populations.

OBJECTIVES: Transmitted drug resistance (TDR) can impair the response to first-line antiretroviral therapy. In treatment-naïve patients chronically infected with HIV type 1 (HIV-1), it was previously shown through Sanger sequencing that TDR was more common in men who have sex with men (MSM) than in other transmission risk groups. We aimed to compare two HIV-1 transmission groups in terms of the presence of TDR mutations. METHODS: We investigated, through Sanger sequencing and ultradeep sequencing (UDS), the presence of resistance mutations, both in majority (> 20%) and in minority (1-20%) pro
