Musculoskeletal injuries among elite artistic and rhythmic Greek gymnasts: A ten-year study of 156 elite athletes.

Data on elite gymnast injuries outside North America is sparse. We report the injuries recorded over a period of 10 years in 156 Greek elite male and female gymnasts. A total of 2390 injuries were reported for a rate of 1,5 new injuries per year per athlete. Most commonly affected areas were the hip (18.5%), the ankle (16.5%), the lumbar spine (16%) and the foot (16%). The most frequent diagnosis was tendinitis (32%), followed by low back pain (20%), and sprains (12%). Fifteen athletes (9%) sustained serious injuries that required surgery. Rhythmic gymnasts had significantly more overuse type

Hip rotational velocities during the full golf swing.

Since labral pathology in professional golfers has been reported, and such pathology has been associated with internal/external hip rotation, quantifying the rotational velocity of the hips during the golf swing may be helpful in understanding the mechanism involved in labral injury. Thus, the purpose of this study was to determine the peak internal/external rotational velocities of the thigh relative to the pelvis during the golf swing. Fifteen female, collegiate golfers participated in the study. Data were acquired through high-speed three dimensional (3-D) videography using a multi-segment

Role of MR imaging in acute injuries to the appendicular skeleton.

Clinical applications of MR imaging in the setting of acute extremity injuries are discussed in general and by anatomic regions. General indications include physeal injuries, occult fractures, stress fractures, musculotendinous injuries, and ligamentous injuries. Indications of MR imaging in the acute injury setting have been expanding. MR imaging is often used to triage patients definitively to surgical versus conservative treatment for such conditions as suspected hip fracture. High-performance athletes are also often imaged acutely. Radiologists need to be familiar with the possible applica

Bilateral simultaneous proximal femoral fractures on dissimilar anatomical regions.

Simultaneous presentation of bilateral proximal femoral fractures following a traumatic event are considered very rare injuries. A literature search revealed that the fracture pattern in bilateral simultaneous proximal femoral fractures is most commonly similar to the anatomical region. We report a case of traumatic bilateral proximal femoral fractures with dissimilar pattern and anatomical location following a low energy trauma. A 90-year-old female presented with a right extracapsular - intertrochanteric neck of femur fracture and a left intracapsular - subcapital neck of femur fracture foll

[Bilateral central femoral dislocation after seizure. Antiprotrusive ring and dual mobility cup as a therapeutic option. Apropos of a case].

INTRODUCTION: seizures can trigger fractures and dislocations. Injuries depend on the severity, duration and type of seizure. We present a case report of a male patient who presented with a bilateral central dislocation fracture of the hip following an episode of seizure. A case rarely described in the literature with complex and unusual management. CASE REPORT: a 77-year-old man with a history of moderate cognitive impairment suffered a bilateral central dislocation of the hip in the context of a generalized epileptic seizure. Clinically on arrival at the emergency department, the patient pr

Relationships of hip abductor strength, neuromuscular control, and hip width to femoral length ratio with peak hip adduction angle in healthy female runners.

A large peak hip adduction angle during running is a risk factor for several overuse injuries in women. The purpose of this study was to determine if female runners with a large peak hip adduction angle have differences in eccentric hip abductor muscle strength, hip neuromuscular control, and/or hip width to femoral length ratio (HW:FL) compared to those with a small angle. Hip adduction during running, hip strength, hip control, and HW:FL were measured in sixty healthy female runners (1.66 ± 0.06 m; 63.2 ± 8.3 kg; 27 ± 6 years). Data from twenty runners with the largest and twenty with the sm

Heterotopic Ossification Formation in Military Beneficiaries Following Hip- and Pelvic-Level Amputations.

INTRODUCTION: Traumatic hip and pelvic level amputations are uncommon but devastating injuries and associated with numerous complications that can significantly affect quality of life for these patients. While heterotopic ossification (HO) formation has been reported at rates of up to 90% following traumatic, combat-related amputations, previous studies included few patients with more proximal hip and pelvic level amputations. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a retrospective review of the Military Health System medical record and identified patients with both traumatic and disease-related

Spinal cord injury in a child: a long term follow-up study. Case report.

The main features of spinal cord injuries in children are known to be that (1) plain radiographs do not show the bony injury; (2) many of the injuries are complete spinal cord injuries; (3) many involve the upper thoracic spine; and (4) the duration of spinal shock is short. Complications such as pressure sores occur just as easily in children as in adults and the injuries are intractable. Typical complications in children with spinal cord injuries are spinal deformity and hip dislocation. We discuss a patient with a C7 spinal cord injury caused by a fall when the patient was 3 years old, and

[Avulsion injuries of the gluteus medius and gluteus minimus muscles].

Avulsion injuries of the gluteus medius and gluteus minimus muscles represent a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge. Such injuries are rarely to be expected in high-energy trauma. Degenerative damage or iatrogenic injuries in the context of hip surgery are more frequently identified as the cause. Clinically, in addition to lateral hip pain, limping is an important finding and depends on the extent of the tendon damage. In addition to the medical history and clinical examination, imaging by means of sonography and, above all, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI, possibly with artifact-reduced sequ

HIP/PAP prevents excitotoxic neuronal death and promotes plasticity.

OBJECTIVES: Excitotoxicity plays a significant role in the pathogenesis of perinatal brain injuries. Among the consequences of excessive activation of the N-methyl-d-aspartate (NMDA)-type glutamate are oxidative stress caused by free radical release from damaged mitochondria, neuronal death and subsequent loss of connectivity. Drugs that could protect nervous tissue and support regeneration are attractive therapeutic options. The hepatocarcinoma intestine pancreas protein/pancreatitis-associated protein I (HIP/PAP) or Reg3α, which is approved for clinical testing for the protection and regener

Posterior dislocation of the hip while playing basketball.

Injuries in basketball are usually to the ankles and knees. Dislocation of the hip is usually associated with severe trauma--for example, road traffic accidents. A case is reported here in which a 22 year old club basketball player slipped on landing from a jump shot, forcing him into a side splits position from which he sustained a posterior dislocation of the hip resulting in a sciatic nerve palsy.

Sustained long-term functional and patient-reported outcomes after complete proximal hamstring repair.

PURPOSE: The purpose was to evaluate long-term functional outcomes, including patient-reported outcomes (PROs), strength recovery and complications, following surgical repair of complete proximal hamstring avulsions at a minimum 5-year follow-up. We hypothesised that patients would demonstrate sustained functional outcomes with minimal long-term strength deficits. METHODS: Patients undergoing surgical repair of complete proximal hamstring tendon avulsions at a single institution with ≥5-year follow-up were included. Bilateral injuries were excluded. Data collected included demographics, perio

[Vascular lesions in surgery of the hip joint].

The vascular anatomy in the acetabular region involves a certain risk of arterial and venous injuries complicating orthopaedic surgery. These complications have been grouped into four categories: lacerations, thrombosis, pseudoaneurysms and arteriovenous fistula. In a period of 5 years, three injuries of the external iliac artery and four lesions of the femoral artery associated with total hip arthroplasty were treated surgically at the Department of Vascular Surgery of the University Hospital in Graz. In one case a concomitant lesion of the pelvic vein was observed. The incidence of iatrogeni

Traumatic hip dislocation in childhood.

We report the outcome of closed reduction of traumatic hip dislocation in 28 children younger than 16 years of age (average age, 8 years 10 months). At an average follow-up of 8 years and 10 months (range, 2 years - 42 years), 18 patients were asymptomatic and enjoying a normal life, and some of them returned to practice sport activities. The remainder had complications related to associated injuries. There were no cases of avascular necrosis of the femoral head during follow-up. The majority of dislocations were attributable to low energy injuries in children younger than 10 years of age. Tra

Open Reduction and Internal Fixation of the Femoral Head via the Smith-Petersen Approach.

Pipkin described femoral head fractures in the 1950s, but controversy still exists regarding indications for surgery and approaches for operative treatment of femoral head fractures. Clear indications for operative intervention include inability to reduce the hip with closed methods, a nonconcentric reduction, fracture fragments within the articulating surface of the hip, and associated injuries (acetabulum and femoral neck fractures) with their own indications for surgery. The anterior approach described by Smith-Petersen has been modified (using only the distal portion) and used to visualize

Are running biomechanics different between females and males with knee injuries? A systematic review and meta-analysis.

PURPOSE: To synthesise the evidence comparing lower limb running biomechanics between females and males with knee injuries. METHODS: We searched six databases (Medline, Embase, Cinahl, SPORTdiscus, Web of Science, and Scopus) from inception to October 2025. We included studies that reported biomechanical data separately for females and males with knee injuries (e.g. patellofemoral pain (PFP), iliotibial band syndrome (ITBS), anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLr)) during running using three-dimensional motion capture and/or force plates. Risk of bias and the quality of biomechanical

Technique factors related to ball release speed and trunk injuries in high performance cricket fast bowlers.

In this study we analysed technique, ball speed and trunk injury data collected at the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) from 42 high performance male fast bowlers over a four year period. We found several notable technique inter-relationships, technique and ball speed relationships, and associations between technique and trunk injuries. A more front-on shoulder alignment at back foot contact was significantly related to increased shoulder counter-rotation (p < 0.001). Bowlers who released the ball at greater speeds had an extended front knee, or extended their front knee, during the front f
