Influences of adrenocortical hormones on pituitary and brain function.

Adrenocortical secretions influence neuroendocrine function and behavior, and it is possible to recognize separate physiologic actions of gluco- and mineralocorticoids. The search for neuroanatomical sites and cellular modes of adrenocorticoid action has revealed a system of putative glucocorticoid receptors in neurons of the hippocampus, septum, amygdala, and entorhinal cortex, and in the pituitary. No part of the brain is totally devoid of receptor activity, however, and glial cells may also contain glucocorticoid receptors. Mineralocorticoid receptors are less well characterized neuroanatom

Influence of hormones on accessory sex glands in males.

Administration of testosterone, oestrogen, progesterone and prolactin for seven days affected the epididymal lipids markedly whereas seminal … cited a significant rise in total lipids. However, an opposite trend was obvious by the other three hormones. Testosterone alone was effective in elevating the total lipids, phospholipid, cholesterol and glycerides in prostates. Prolactin does not affect the prostatic lipids markedly. The significance of the lipid changes are discussed in relation to vario …

Release of gastrointestinal hormones following an oral water load.

The ingestion of 2 different water loads (7.5 and 15 ml/kg) by healthy subjects stimulated the release of plasma motilin, gastrin, pancreatic polypeptide and VIP. Atropine was found to block the release of PP but not the other hormones.

Tumor markers: hormones, antigens, and enzymes in malignant disease.

Tumor markers (TM) represent a critical area of clinical investigation in cancer management. The mechanism of TM production and release are discussed for the three classes of TM: non-endocrine tumor produced hormones, tumor associated antigens, and tumor related enzymes. The concept of TM as a means of screening large patient populations for detection of early cancer has not been worthwhile, related in part to the uncommon occurrence of elevated levels of circulating TM, and in part to the fact that TM are generally abnormally elevated in patients with advanced and clinically detectable diseas…

New aspects of the trophic action of gastrointestinal hormones.

This paper deals with several new findings regarding the trophic action of gastrointestinal hormones. Naturally occurring gastrins (G-17 I, G-17 II, G-34 II) stimulated DNA synthesis and increased total DNA content of gastric mucosa. These were several times more potent than pentagastrin on a molar basis. In a survey of various tissues from the gastrointestinal tract, pentagastrin exerted trophic effects on mucosa of the oxyntic gland area, duodenum, and colon; it had no effect on the esophagus, antrum, or diaphragm. Maximal stimulation (200% of control) of colonic DNA synthesis was produced b…

Bartter's syndrome results from an imbalance of vasoactive hormones.

Bartter's syndrome may result from a disturbance of the interrelations of three vasoactive hormonal systems: the kallikrein-kinin, renin-angiotensin, and prostaglandin systems. Although kinin and angiotensin have opposing effects on renal function, each hormone increases the levels of prostaglandins within the kidney. Elevated renal prostaglandin levels are primarily responsible for some of the major features of the syndrome. The effectiveness of indomethacin in the treatment of Bartter's syndrome derives in large part from the ability of the drug to inhibit prostaglandin production. Indometha

Pituitary hormone responses to hypothalamic releasing hormones in acromegaly.

The pituitary reserve of GH, prolactin, TSH, LH, and FSH has been studied in a group of 13 acromegalic patients with the aim of evaluating the pituitary function and the activity of the disease. Plasma GH, TSH and polactin were determined after thyrotrophin releasing hormone (TRH) administration, plasma gonadotrophins and GH after luteinizing hormone releasing hormone (LH-RH) administration. The plasma TSH response to TRH was generally blunted in the patients treated with pituitary irradiation; however, none of the patients with diminished TSH reserve had signs of hypothyroidism. Six acromegal

Altered hepatic glycogen metabolism and glucoregulatory hormones during sepsis.

Levels of glucose, insulin, and glucagon in portal vein plasma and of liver glycogen and cyclic AMP and activities of glycogen synthase and phosphorylase in liver were assayed in control (CONT) rats and rats infected (INF) with Diplococcus pneumoniae. In INF rats compared with CONT rats, insulin and glucagon levels were higher (8,12,24 h). Activity of synthase I was lower (8, 12, 24 h) and of phosphorylase higher (12 and 24 h) in INF rats. Cyclic AMP levels were higher in INF rats at 12 and 24 h. Total synthase activity was lower in INF rats at 24 h. Glucose given intravenously increased glyco

Stimulation of mitochondrial adenosine diphosphate uptake by thyroid hormones.

Thyroid hormone administered in vivo increased carrier-mediated (atractyloside-sensitive) ADP uptake by rat liver mitochondria. 3 Days after a single large dose of triiodothyronine (20 mug/100 g of body weight), mitochondrial uptake of ADP measured at 6 degrees was 2.35 +/- 0.17 nmol/min per mg of protein, compared with an uptake of 1.81 +/- 0.19 nmol/min per mg of protein in mitochondria from untreated rats (P < 0.025). Cyanide (1.33 mM) had no effect on ADP uptake by mitochondria from either untreated or triiodothyronine-treated animals. Uptake of ADP by mitochondria from thyroidectomized ra

Influence of hormones and chemical carcinogen on murine leukaemia.

Leukaemogenesis induced with chemical carcinogens and hormones was studied in intact and ovariectomized mice of the ICRC strain which is susceptible to spontaneous development of both breast cancer and leukaemia and the Strong A strain susceptible only to breast cancer and not to leukaemia. In ovariectomized females oestradiol was administered at two dose levels (i) 1 μg oestradiol/day for 30 days, (ii) 10 μg oestradiol/day for 30 days. The effect of oestradiol (1 μg/day) and progesterone (1 mg/day) for 30 days was also studied. In one group, two pituitaries of the syngeneic male mice were imp…
