BACKGROUND: Rectal trauma carries significant morbidity, particularly if there is a delay in diagnosis. Digital rectal examination has a relatively low sensitivity. Proctoscopy and sigmoidoscopy are available but can be limited in situations with increased fecal burden or uncooperative patients.
