Effects of hypoglossal nerve block and electrical stimulation of the thyrohyoideus muscles on position of the larynx and hyoid apparatus in healthy horses.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the effects of hypoglossal nerve block and electrical stimulation of the thyrohyoideus muscles on position of the larynx and hyoid apparatus in resting horses. ANIMALS: 16 healthy horses that underwent hypoglossal nerve block and 5 healthy horses that underwent electrical stimulation of the thyrohyoideus muscles. PROCEDURES: Horses underwent bilateral hypoglossal nerve block or electrical stimulation of the thyrohyoideus muscles. Positions of the basihyoid bone, ossified part of the thyroid cartilage, and articulations of the thyrohyoid bones and thyroid cartilage wer…

[Study of the hyo-thyro-epiglottic space by ultrasonography].

The pre-epiglottic space is located superficially at the junction of the larynx, oropharynx and hypopharynx. When it is invaded by a neighbouring cancer, the latter rises to stages 3 or 4 of the TNM classification. The space is explorable by percutaneous ultrasonic scanning of the neck. The present paper gives the first description of the normal sonographic anatomy of the pre-epiglottic space, based on 16 healthy volunteers. It also gives the first description of invasion of that space, based on 18 patients operated upon for ENT (ear, nose and throat) cancers. In 5 of these 18 patients, invasi

Endoscopy of the auditory tube diverticula in four horses with otitis media/interna.

Endoscopic examination of the auditory tube diverticula was a diagnostic aid in the evaluation of 4 horses with otitis media/interna and associated osseous changes of the stylohyoid and petrous temporal. One of the horses was examined because of persistent head shaking; the other 3 were examined because of an acute onset of facial and vestibulocochlear nerve dysfunction. Proliferative lesions involving the petrous temporal bone and proximal portion of the stylohyoid bone were identified endoscopically in all 4 horses. Endoscopy is a noninvasive procedure that provides an alternative to skull r…

How to assess tonsilloliths and styloid chain ossifications on cone beam computed tomography images.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to establish an anatomical guideline in cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) images to discriminate soft-tissue calcifications, specifically, tonsilloliths, and styloid chain ossification (SCO) in the multiplanar reconstruction screen of the i-CAT Vision. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We analyzed 100 pairs of CBCT images and panoramic digital radiographies regarding the presence or absence of tonsilloliths and SCO. The intraobserver agreement varied from excellent to good. The statistical analyses included Mann-Whitney test, chi-square test, Spearman test, Studen

Anterior lingual mandibular bone depression in an 11-year-old child.

This report describes physical and imaging findings in a case of anterior lingual mandibular bone depression in a child. This entity is very rarely diagnosed and even more extremely rarely seen in children. We present some characteristic findings depicted on images provided by different sources and briefly address current hypotheses on its pathogenesis.

Robotic resection of lingual thyroglossal duct cyst in an infant.

Thyroglossal duct cysts (TDCs) are the most common congenital midline neck masses. Lingual TDC is a rare variant that emerges as an isolated cyst at the tongue base. Unlike conventional procedures aiming removal of cyst, duct, and hyoid bone via open surgical access, a transoral cystectomy is mostly sufficient in cases with lingual TDC. We present a case describing a 3-month-old infant patient with lingual TDC who was successfully treated with transoral robotic surgery. The cyst wall was completely excised with no complications or obvious bleeding occurred. The operating time was 10 min. He ha…

Thyroglossal duct cyst carcinoma: diagnostic and management considerations in a 15-year-old with a large submental mass.

A 15-year old boy presented with a 2-year history of a painless slowly enlarging submental neck mass. Head and neck imaging showed a multicystic mass with a central solid component that was closely applied to the hyoid bone. Core needle biopsy under general anaesthesia revealed a papillary thyroid neoplasm. The mass was resected and frozen section histology confirmed papillary carcinoma. Intraoperatively, enlarged cervical lymph nodes were palpable. Bilateral neck dissections and total thyroidectomy with parathyroid reimplantation were performed. On histological examination, the thyroid gland …

Ultrasound studies on the shift of cervical tissues in different head and neck positions--impact on transoral endoscopic, minimally invasive and conventional thyroid surgery.

During the development of a transoral endoscopic, minimally invasive approach for thyroidectomy, the question arose as to how the distances of the submandibular gland (SG)-hyoid bone (HB)-thyroid gland (TG) change in differing head positions and how the TG itself changes shape. In a prospective, two-armed ultrasound study we studied 20 healthy volunteers each, all with no history of neck surgery or thyroid disease. Distances were measured in normal, reclined and "reclined with open mouth" positions. We found no remarkable differences and the distances were comparable with conventional open or …

The lingual lymph node identified as a sentinel node on CT lymphography in a patient with cN0 squamous cell carcinoma of the tongue.

We performed CT lymphography on an 81-year-old female patient with a histologically confirmed squamous cell carcinoma of the tongue with no clinical or radiological evidence of cervical lymph node involvement. The lateral lingual lymph node was identified as a sentinel node, which is the first lymph node to receive drainage from a primary tumour. CT lymphography also showed draining lymphatics passing through the sublingual space, the medial side of the submandibular gland and near the hyoid bone and connected with the middle internal jugular node. Although metastasis to the lateral lingual ly…

Morphology of a dicephalic cat.

A detailed anatomical study of a dicephalic iniodymic monosomic cat in conjunction with the morphogenetical implications of the observed anomalies is presented. The animal exhibited two heads joined at the level of an anomalous medial exoccipital bone. Two brains and two foramina magna were present. The vertebral column was single but the cranial cervical vertebrae (C2 to C5) had doubled bodies. Cervical rachischisis with myeloschisis were associated defects. Two nasopharyngeal and oropharyngeal cavities converged caudally into a single laryngopharynx. The esophagus, larynx and trachea were si

Extravasation mucocele arising from a lingual thyroglossal duct remnant.

Although a thyroglossal duct cyst is a congenital anomaly, it can also appear in adults. Despite the presence of embryological remnants, it is still unclear why the cyst should suddenly develop later in life. We report a case of a 46-year-old male with an extravasation mucocele arising from a long-standing lingual thyroglossal duct remnant. MRI demonstrated a lingual cystic lesion near the hyoid bone associated with a suprahyoid tract-like structure masquerading as a thyroglossal duct cyst. However, histopathological examination demonstrated a mucocele secondary to a rupture of a thyroglossal …

Relationship between severity of sleep-disordered breathing and craniofacial morphology in Japanese male patients.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to assess the influence of factors of obesity and craniofacial morphology on the degree of obstru … itions such as short mandibular body and mandibular retreat, size of the tongue and position of the hyoid bone, and shape of the airway were associated with the severity of OSAS. CONCLUSION: In Japanese male OSAS patients, skeletal abnormalities are thought to be the factors that most greatly affect severity of OSAS.

Cephalometric analysis for diagnosis and treatment of obstructive sleep apnea.

A detailed cephalometric analysis was conducted on lateral x-rays from 30 adult patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and 12 age- and sex-matched controls. Statistical findings show that OSA patients are different from controls in at least five ways: 1. Their tongue and soft palate are significantly enlarged. 2. The hyoid bone is displaced inferiorly. 3. The mandible is normal in size and position (no micrognathia or malocclusion), but the face is elongated by an inferior displacement of the mandibular body. 4. The maxilla is retropositioned and the hard palate elongated. 5. The nasophar…

[Instructions for the complete preparation of the larynx].

A method of preparing the larynx in forensic cases is described especially when death occurs by strangulation (manually or using some form of ligature). After the usual dissection of the hyoid bone and the upper horns of the thyroid cartilage, the complete larynx is clipped and fixed in formaldehyde overnight. The first part of dissection after that is to cut away the thyroid gland and the remaining muscles in front of the larynx, except for the cricothyroid muscle and the esophagus and hypopharynx from the back of the larynx. The complete thyroid cartilage is dissected out, and then a horizon…
