Experiments on white rats found that both chronic acidosis and chronic alkalosis cause fasting hyperglycemia and decreases glucose tolerance. In hypophysectomized animals, alkalosis causes similar effects and acidosis leads to hypoglycemia. A man with a prolactin secreting pituitary carcinoma was treated by surgery and radiotherapy. Persistent hyperprolactinaemia partially responded to oral bromocriptine for four years. Serum prolactin then rose considerably with rapid, invasive tumour recurrence. Cytotoxic chemotherapy halted tumour progression for twelve months before fatal spread throughout the brain. Failure to normalise serum prolactin with bromocriptine may precede an aggressive course in patients with prolactinoma.

In this paper we present evidence that a single low dose of the natural synthetic gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH), inhibits ovulation induced by LH in proestrous-hypophysectomized rats. Rats hypophysectomized by the parapharyngeal route in the morning of proestrus received an intravenous injection of 100 or 300 ng GnRH at 1400 h immediately followed by 1.0 microgram LH per 100 g bw. The ability of GH to regulate its own receptor in adipocytes of hormone-substituted hypophysectomized rats was studied. Male rats (130-150 g) were hypophysectomized and substituted with T4 and cortisone. A fixed dose of GH (bovine GH, human GH, or ovine GH), was administered for 5-6 days in three different ways: 1) two injections/day, 2) four injections/day, or 3) by osmotic minipumps. GH binding was measured in cell aliquots using [125I]human GH. In unsubstituted hypophysectomized animals, GH binding was decreased and was approximately 25% of the binding observed in adipocytes of normal rats.

A sensitive and specific radioimmunoassay for the measurement of arg-vasopressin (AVP) in human plasma is described. Recovery of added AVP from plasma was about 65-70%.
