Traumatic enophthalmos.

Traumatic enophthalmos, either following orbital floor fracture or enucleation, is caused by decreased orbital volume. Volume replacement, both surgical and/or nonsurgical, provides a direct treatment. Surgical treatment can increase orbital volume by reducing the herniated orbital tissue and/or implanting alloplastic or autogenous material. When a seeing eye is present, implant surgery may compromise vision; volume replacement must be judicious. Alternative surgical management creates the illusion that little or no enophthalmos exists by enlarging the palpebral fissure or changing orbital con

Spectrum of digoxin-induced ocular toxicity: a case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Digoxin intoxication results in predominantly digestive, cardiac and neurological symptoms. This case is outstanding in that the intoxication occurred in a nonagenarian and induced severe, extensively documented visual symptoms as well as dysphagia and proprioceptive illusions. Moreover, it went undiagnosed for a whole month despite close medical follow-up, illustrating the difficulty in recognizing drug-induced effects in a polymorbid patient. CASE PRESENTATION: Digoxin 0.25 mg qd for atrial fibrillation was prescribed to a 91-year-old woman with an estimated creatinine clearance…

Pseudo-dense Hair Transplantation: Strategy of "Less Inside, More Outside" and Central Bulking with Curled Chest Hairs as Treatment for Scalp Scars.

Hair transplantation in areas of scalp scars is a clinical challenge. However, by creating the visual illusion of central bulking with the use of peripherally transplanted curled chest hairs, cicatricial alopecia can perhaps be cosmetically improved. In a case of a 34-year-old affected man, this strategic procedure was implemented with positive results, as the transplantation was successful, the scar was far less noticeable, and the patient was satisfied with the results. The "pseudo-dense hair transplantation" method can be applied to similar patients, noting that a more succinct procedure wi

The Fröhlich effect: a consequence of the interaction of visual focal attention and metacontrast.

Usually we assume that the central nervous system preserves temporal sequences. Here we show that moving objects--in the context of behaviour often dangerous ones--are seen with a shorter latency than stationary (flashed) objects. In addition moving objects are deblurred. Two mechanisms contribute to this functional specialisation: cue-induced visual focal attention and metacontrast. Under unnatural conditions these mechanisms lead to an optical illusion first described by Fröhlich [Fröhlich, F. W. (1923). Uber die Messung der Empfindungszeit. Zeitschrift für Sinnesphysiologie, 54, 58-78].

Illusory Obesity Triggers Body Dissatisfaction Responses in the Insula and Anterior Cingulate Cortex.

In today's Western society, concerns regarding body size and negative feelings toward one's body are all too common. However, little is known about the neural mechanisms underlying negative feelings toward the body and how they relate to body perception and eating-disorder pathology. Here, we used multisensory illusions to elicit illusory ownership of obese and slim bodies during functional magnetic resonance imaging. The results implicate the anterior insula and the anterior cingulate cortex in the development of negative feelings toward the body through functional interactions with the poste…

Simulated viewpoint jitter shakes sensory conflict accounts of vection.

Sensory conflict has been used to explain the way we perceive and control our self-motion, as well as the aetiology of motion sickness. However, recent research on simulated viewpoint jitter provides a strong challenge to one core prediction of these theories -- that increasing sensory conflict should always impair visually induced illusions of self-motion (known as vection). These studies show that jittering self-motion displays (thought to generate significant and sustained visual-vestibular conflict) actually induce superior vection to comparable non-jittering displays (thought to generate …

Perceived direction of glass patterns can flip by 90°: A neural model.

We show a 90° shift in the perceived direction of a well-known motion illusion, based on the dot-pair separation in dynamic Glass patterns. The change can be explained with a cortical model incorporating extra-classical receptive fields. We employed dynamic Glass patterns: a sequence of patterns of randomly positioned, but consistently oriented dot-pairs, presented in rapid succession. Although dynamic Glass patterns contain no coherent motion, observers perceive strong motion in either direction parallel to the dot-pair orientation for small dot-pair separations (< 30 arc min). This has been

Minor Hallucinations in Alzheimer's Disease.

BACKGROUND: Hallucinations may have a broad spectrum and include so-called minor hallucinations (MHs). MHs include passage hallucinations (PHs), visual illusions, and presence hallucinations (PrHs). OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence and characteristics of MHs in Alzheimer's disease (AD) and amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI) patients, and to describe their potential relationship with cognition, behavioral symptoms, and use of psychoactive drugs. METHODS: We have recruited prospectively and consecutively 268 subjects (90 AD mild-moderate drug-naïve patients, 78 aMCI, and 100 contr…

Deficit of temporal auditory processing in dyslexic adults.

Dyslexia is a common disorder with largely unknown pathophysiology. We tested ten dyslexic adults and 20 control subjects with trains of binaural clicks which led to illusory sound movements at short click intervals. In controls, the illusion disappeared at intervals exceeding 90-120 ms while in the dyslexics it persisted up to intervals of 250-500 ms. Dyslexic adults thus seem to have a deficit in the processing of rapid sound sequences, which is also manifested in significant delays in their conscious auditory percepts. This pathophysiological abnormality seems to persist throughout life.

Nipple centralization for the correction of breast deformity from segmental mastectomy.

A breast deformed by lateral tissue deficiency and severe lateral displacement of the nipple, caused by the treatment of an early breast cancer with segmental mastectomy and radiotherapy, was corrected by a modification of techniques used commonly for mastopexy. The nipple and areola were moved medially on a central pedicle to create the illusion that the missing lateral tissues had been restored. Simultaneously, the opposite breast was reduced to improve symmetry. The result was a normalization of breast appearance without the need for distant tissue. It is possible that modifications of this

Exploring Virtual Reality for Body Image Assessment and Psychological Interventions in Individuals With Obesity: a Comprehensive Review.

INTRODUCTION: Individuals living with obesity often experience body image (BI) disturbances, which can negatively affect their quality of life and treatment outcomes. Virtual reality (VR) has emerged as a promising tool for enhancing psychological interventions, but no comprehensive review has specifically focused on VR-based studies addressing BI disturbances in this population. METHODS: This comprehensive review examined studies utilizing VR for the assessment and treatment of BI disturbances in individuals with obesity. Twelve studies met the inclusion criteria. RESULTS: Studies were cate

The effect of eye disease, cataract surgery and hearing aid use on multisensory integration in ageing.

Sensory impairment is common in ageing, as are approaches to treat it. However, the impact of age-related sensory impairment upon multisensory perception remains unexplored, despite the multisensory nature of our environment. Here, we used data from The Irish Longitudinal Study of Ageing (TILDA) to investigate whether common, age-related eye diseases (cataracts, glaucoma and Age-Related Macular Degeneration, ARMD) and clinical intervention to improve sensory function (cataract removal and hearing aids) influence multisensory integration in older adults. Integration was measured using the Sound

Amplified Striatal Responses to Near-Miss Outcomes in Pathological Gamblers.

Near-misses in gambling games are losing events that come close to a win. Near-misses were previously shown to recruit reward-related brain regions including the ventral striatum, and to invigorate gambling behavior, supposedly by fostering an illusion of control. Given that pathological gamblers are particularly vulnerable to such cognitive illusions, their persistent gambling behavior might result from an amplified striatal sensitivity to near-misses. In addition, animal studies have shown that behavioral responses to near-miss-like events are sensitive to dopamine, but this dopaminergic inf…

Organic mental disorders associated with bupropion in three patients.

Bupropion hydrochloride is a phenylaminoketone antidepressant whose clinical pharmacology is poorly understood. Part of bupropion's action may be attributed to inhibition of dopamine reuptake that may induce organic mental disorders in certain susceptible patients. We report three cases of organic mental disorders in patients receiving bupropion hydrochloride for treatment of the depressed phase of their bipolar-type mood instability. The organic mental disorders that occurred in these patients were characterized largely by visual disturbances--visual hallucinations and visual illusions--altho…

[Parosmias--definition and clinical picture].

The paper proposes the definition and technical terms with greater precision for the description of qualitative smelling disturbances. Thereafter, parosmias are relevant only for the ENT specialist. Their further classification seems to be unnecessary or even false. These parosmias are always described to be troublesome for the patient since he feels the abnormality of the olfactory sensation. Thus, a clear distinction against phantosmias (olfactory hallucinations) and pseudoosmias (olfactory illusions) is given. The cause of parosmias is frequently speculative. Most frequently there occur tra…

Attentional capture by real and illusory faces: a failure to replicate.

Evidence indicates that faces are rapidly detected and prioritized in visual processing due to their social relevance. Crucially, research has shown that faces capture attention even when they are task-irrelevant, suggesting the existence of an automatic, domain-specific attentional mechanism. This prioritization appears to extend to face pareidolia-the illusory perception of faces in objects-indicating that face detection may rely on a broadly tuned mechanism that classifies stimuli as faces or non-faces based on relatively minimal information, such as the T-shaped configuration common to all
