OBJECTIVE: Writer's cramp (WC) is a focal task-specific dystonia characterized by abnormal posturing of the hand muscles during handwriting, but not during other tasks that involve the same set of muscles and objects such as sharpening a pencil. Our objective was to investigate the pathophysiology underlying the task specificity of this disorder using EEG. We hypothesized that premotor-parietal connectivity will be lower in WC patients specifically during handwriting and motor imagery of handwriting.

BACKGROUND: The phenotype of children with XXYY has predominantly been defined by comparison to other sex chromosome aneuploidies trisomies affecting male children; however, the intellectual ability of children with XXYY is lower than children with other sex chromosome aneuploidies trisomies. It is not known to what extent the phenotype identified to date is specific to XXYY, rather than a reflection of lower IQ. This study evaluates the mental health and behaviour of children with XXYY, in comparison to children with intellectual disabilities of heterogeneous genetic origin.

We present a case of olfactory reference syndrome (ORS) with complaints of bromhidrosis. This patient underwent a lumbar sympathectomy to correct the imagined body odor problem. The patient reported experiencing an improvement after surgery, but later, the olfactory symptoms returned. The main objective with ORS patients should be to begin psychiatric treatment early. Other treatments usually appear to be ineffective and cause great dissatisfaction.

A 39-year-old lady presented with low back pain and neurogenic claudication. Magnetic resonance imagining revealed an intradural neoplasm in the cauda equina region. The patient underwent lumbar laminectomy and total excision of the neoplasm. Biopsy showed it to be a ganglioneuroblastoma, which is rare in the spinal canal and so far does not appear to have been reported in the region of the cauda equina. Its management is discussed.

Acne excoriée is a self-inflicted skin condition in which the sufferer has an urge to pick real or imagined acnieform lesions and which results in a worsening and spreading of the acne. The condition differs from most artefactual dermatoses as the patient usually spontaneously admits the self-inflicted nature of the condition. Although this condition is considered to be a neurotic manifestation of the patient, traditional psychiatric treatments have proved unsuccessful.
