OBJECTIVES: The prognosis of patients with small cell lung cancer (SCLC) is dismal with a median survival not exceeding 18 months. For the fact that the tumor stage remains the most significant prognostic factor, efforts have been made to improve its accuracy. A highly sensitive and selective photoelectrochemical sensor for Cu(2+) was developed based on the selective interaction between CdS quantum dots (QDs) immobilized on an indium tin oxide (ITO) electrode surface and Cu(2+) in a triethanolamine (TEA) solution to form Cu(x)S-doped CdS QDs, which disrupts the electron transfer from the conduction band of CdS to ITO and results in a decrease of photocurrent.

Highly luminescent network films on flat indium tin oxide (ITO) substrates are prepared by electropolymerization using an electroactive and fluorescent compound as precursor; the LEDs prepared using these films as a light emitting layer achieve the maximum luminance and external quantum efficiency of 4224 cd/m(2) and 0.72%, respectively, which demonstrates that electrochemical synthesis can be a new route to construct the highly luminescent films.

A new multi-component condensation was discovered during the reaction of a urea, β-keto ester, and formaldehyde. In the presence of catalytic indium bromide, a Biginelli dihydropyrimidinone intermediate was further converted to a five-component condensation product through a formal hetero Diels-Alder reaction. The product structure was confirmed by NMR and NOE analysis, and the proposed stepwise mechanism was supported by the reaction of the Biginelli intermediate with ethyl 2-methylene-3-oxobutanoate.

We describe photopatterning technique that employs the photodegradation of cell-adhesive-modified poly(ethyleneimine) (m-PEI) to fabricate precise micropatterns on the indium tin oxide (ITO) substrate for guided neuronal growth. The photodegradation of m-PEI coated on hydroxyl group-terminated ITO substrate created micropatterns over a large area through deep UV irradiation. The photopatterned m-PEI layer can effectively guide neurite outgrowth and control neurite extensions from individual neurons.

We demonstrate an opto-electrokinetic technique for non-invasive particle manipulation on the surface of a parallel-plate indium tin oxide (ITO) electrode that is biased with an alternating current (AC) signal and illuminated with near-infrared (1064 nm) optical landscapes. This technique can generate strong microfluidic vortices at higher AC frequencies (>100 kHz) and dynamically and rapidly aggregate and pattern particle groups at low frequencies (<100 kHz).
