Babesia infections in man.

Only recently has it been recognized that hemotropic animal parasites of the genus babesia are also human pathogens. Similar to malaria in both symptoms and laboratory findings, acute babesiosis generally results in self-limited illness, but it can be fatal in the asplenic patient. The widely disseminated vector tick, Ixodes dammini, can transmit infection at each stage of its development, larva and nymph as well as adult.

Anaerobic pleuro-pulmonary infections.

Anaerobic pleuropulmonary infections usually arise from aspiration of oral bacteria. The degree of virulence depends on host factors, especially state of tissue oxygenation, and on size of inoculum. Fetid sputum, if present, frequently is diagnostic. Use of penicillin G is preferred therapy for all forms of anaerobic pleuropulmonary infection.

Bacterionema matruchotii ocular infections.

One case of endophthalmitis and two cases of corneal ulceration, each occurring in a structurally altered eye, were associated with Bacterionema matruchotii, a gram-positive filamentous bacillus.

[Nosocomial infections (author's transl)].

Within 3 years 2546 nosocomial infections were registered among 18 897 hospitalised patients of a gynaecological-obstetric university hospital, Results were obtained in a prospective study on the use of nurses specially trained in hygiene. The incidence of nosocomial infections was 13.5% including predominantly asymptomatic bacteriurias and 3.9% without bacteriurias. It was higher after major surgical intervention and lowest in pregnant women, postnatal patients, vaginal deliveries and minor operations. Bacteriurias were the most common infection in all patient groups. They made up 71% of the …

[Anaerobic infections in surgery].

In the past few years the incidence of anaerobes in the aetiology of surgical infections has definitely increased due to a distinct increase in anaerobic flora and to the noticeable improvement in isolation and culture techniques which have drastically decreased the incidence of so-called "sterile pus". The development of the toxi-infective shock due to Gram negative anaerobes, presents the most serious clinical problems, being the shock with the highest mortality rate. A paradigmatic example of shock due to surgical infections is the shock complicating peritonitis. A correct postoperative beh…

Infections caused by Rhodochrous.

Organisms conforming to "rhodochrous taxon" were isolated from three immunocompromised patients, suggesting a pathogenic role for the organisms. The organisms are partially acid-fast, gram-positive catalase positive rods which form orange or red colonies aerobically in three or four days on Sabouraud, Mueller-Hinton and Middlebrook 7H-10 agars. They are differenitated from Nocardia by morphology and ability to degrade ethylene glycol in 7H-10 media. Two of these clinical isolates and a reference strain were injected intraperitoneally into guinea pigs, half of which received methylprednisolone

Enterovirus infections in neonates.

Twenty-seven ill neonates with enterovirus infections were studied to learn if enterovirus infection can be distinguished from neonatal sepsis. Enterovirus infection was associated with the summer-fall season (93%), recent maternal illness (59%), absence of other perinatal problems (81%), and findings of fever (93%), viral meningitis (62%), diarrhea (81%), and rash (41%). Four children developed thrombocytopenia and three necrotizing enterocolitis. Three children died, all with Coxsackie B virus infections that likely were acquired in utero. Although no single feature is pathognomonic, this co…
