Self-assessment of Knowledge vs. Real Reactions in Simulated Emergency Situations among Contact Lens Wearers in Switzerland.

BACKGROUND: If used properly, contact lenses (CLs) provide a safe and effective alternative to eyeglasses for refractive error correction. However, often due to patient noncompliance, CL-related complications may occur, such as discomfort, dry eye, as well as serious conditions like infectious keratitis. Our study aimed to assess the perceived knowledge and behavior of CL wearers in Switzerland regarding the handling of CLs and associated ocular health risks. METHODS: This investigator-initiated, cross-sectional, qualitative, multicenter study was conducted in Switzerland from August 2023 to

Compound Disaster Exposure and Preparedness Among Older Adults: The Amplifying Role of Caregiving Responsibility.

Older adults are especially vulnerable during disasters, yet the factors influencing their preparedness remain underexamined. This study investigates whether exposure to compound disasters (multiple, overlapping hazard events within a year) is associated with greater preparedness among older adults and whether caregiving responsibilities moderate this relationship. Using data from the 2022 and 2023 FEMA National Household Surveys (N = 4,075), we employed multivariable logistic regression to assess the impact of compound exposure and its interaction with caregiving status on preparedness. Resul

Criminal responsibility or lack of cultural awareness? The Andrea Yates story.

Physicians and other mental health professionals in our state should continue, based on Tennessee's child abuse statutes, to report possible abuse and neglect when indicated even if the behavior is considered culturally normal. In addition, professionals attempting to serve diverse populations must incorporate an understanding of culture, traditions, religious beliefs and other information specific to family interactions. They should include family history of mental illness into the design of their individual treatment plans. Providers should form working partnerships with communities in order

Predictors of condom use behavior among men who have sex with men in China using a modified information-motivation-behavioral skills (IMB) model.

BACKGROUND: Men who have sex with men (MSM) are at high risk for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection in China. Correct and consistent condom use is one of the most effective strategies for preventing the spread of HIV. This study developed a modified Information-Motivation-Behavioral Skills (IMB) model to predict condom use behavior among Chinese MSM. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted to collect data using self-administered electronic questionnaire. Participants were recruited from HIV Voluntary Counseling and Testing clinics in six district Centers for Disease Control a

Characterizing Help-Seeking Searches for Substance Use Treatment From Google Trends and Assessing Their Use for Infoveillance: Longitudinal Descriptive and Validation Statistical Analysis.

BACKGROUND: There is no recognized gold standard method for estimating the number of individuals with substance use disorders (SUDs) seeking help within a given geographical area. This presents a challenge to policy makers in the effective deployment of resources for the treatment of SUDs. Internet search queries related to help seeking for SUDs using Google Trends may represent a low-cost, real-time, and data-driven infoveillance tool to address this shortfall in information. OBJECTIVE: This paper assesses the feasibility of using search query data related to help seeking for SUDs as an indi

The association of online search interest with polio cases and vaccine coverage: an infodemiological and ecological study.

Achievement of universal eradication of paralytic poliomyelitis has remained a challenge. Despite the general decline in cases, multiple outbreaks attributed to poor vaccination still occur. Noncompliance from vaccination can be improved through education on various media platforms. In the internet age, online health-seeking behavior plays a significant role in this regard. Hence, our study investigated the association between global online search interest in polio with the number of polio cases and vaccination coverage. This infodemiological and ecological study utilized Google Trends' search

Self-Help Seeking for People Concerned About Their Thoughts and Behaviors Regarding Children During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Concerns about the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on child sexual exploitation and abuse have been expressed by police and child protection organizations. However, there are limited data about how the pandemic may have caused changes in the help-seeking behavior of people who have concerns about their thoughts and behaviors regarding children. In this study, we examine helpline and webpage metrics from two organizations - Stop It Now! USA and Lucy Faithfull Foundation's Stop It Now! UK and Ireland - providing resources about child sexual exploitation and abuse prevention, including self-help

The structure and subtypes of gambling activities: Genetic, psychiatric and behavioral etiologies of gambling frequency.

The multitude of gambling activities has given rise to heterogeneous ways of analyzing these behaviors and may partially underlie the lack of replication in gambling research. The current study used complementary analyses to investigate the structure, typology and etiology of gambling behaviors in a discovery sample of 2,116 twins (54.86% female; Mage = 24.90) and a replication sample of 619 siblings (30.37% female; Mage = 28.00). Our approach was twofold. First, we used confirmatory factor analyses to investigate the structure across the frequency of eight gambling activities. Second, we used

"It's Finding the Time to Prioritize Ourselves": Using the Theory of Planned Behavior to Explore Young Black Women's Attitudes, Norms, and Beliefs Toward Mental Health Care.

Across the United States, Black women are likely to have unmet mental health needs, with greater personal, social, and structural barriers to mental health treatment compared to other groups. The Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) may help to conceptualize young Black women’s mental health beliefs and help-seeking behaviors. The current study aimed to use the TPB framework and a concurrent mixed methods approach to explore behavioral, normative, and control beliefs toward seeking mental health care among a sample of young Black women from community settings. The sample consisted of 33 Black wome

A cross-sectional survey of general practitioners' influenza vaccination willingness and influencing factors based on the reasoned action approach.

General practitioners (GPs) play a dual role in influenza prevention and control as both medical decision-makers and a high-risk population for infection. This study, based on the Reasoned Action Approach (RAA), aimed to explore GPs' influenza vaccination willingness and its influencing factors. Data were collected via an online questionnaire from February 11 to March 20, 2025, using convenience sampling. The questionnaire covered general profiles, influenza vaccination in the last season, vaccination willingness, and a RAA-based scales (including dimensions of attitude, subjective norms, and

Longitudinal correlates of aggressive behavior in help-seeking U.S. veterans with PTSD.

The current study examined the longitudinal effects of clinical and treatment utilization factors on aggressive behavior among 376 help-seeking U.S. veterans recently diagnosed with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) who were followed for 5-12 months. Participants were sampled from 4 strata: male Iraq/Afghanistan veterans, female Iraq/Afghanistan veterans, male prior-era veterans, and female prior-era veterans. Hierarchical regression analyses indicated that changes in PTSD severity were significantly associated with changes in aggressive behavior among veterans who reported any aggression a

Lack of sex- and gender-disaggregated data in diagnostics: findings from a scoping review of five tracer conditions.

BACKGROUND: Sex and gender can affect all aspects of health-related behavior, yet there is limited information on how they influence diagnosis of any health condition. This scoping review examined the extent to which sex- and gender-disaggregated data on diagnostics are available for five tracer conditions: tuberculosis, coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), diabetes, malaria, and schistosomiasis. METHODS: Publications were searched between 2000 and 2022 on PubMed and Google Scholar and screened for relevance. Extracted data were analysed using descriptive quantitative and qualitative approach

Disordered eating behavior and mental health correlates among treatment seeking obese women.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Previous research has suggest that obesity is associated with increased risk for psychopathological disorders, however, little is known about which obese patients are most vulnerable to psychopathological disorders. We therefore investigated 126 treatment-seeking obese women to describe eating disorder pathology and mental health correlates, and to identify disordered eating behaviors that may place obese at increased risk for psychopathological disorders. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV (SCID) was used to identify Eating Disorder

Molecular characterization and evolution of a chemosensory receptor gene family in three notorious rice planthoppers, Nilaparvata lugens, Sogatella furcifera and Laodelphax striatellus, based on genome and transcriptome analyses.

BACKGROUND: The white-backed planthopper (WBPH) Sogatella furcifera, the brown planthopper (BPH) Nilaparvata lugens, and the small brown planthopper (SBPH) Laodelphax striatellus (Hemiptera: Delphacidae) are rice pests that damage rice plants by sap-sucking and by transmitting viruses. Host-seeking behavior involves chemosensory receptor genes that include odorant receptors (ORs), ionotropic receptors (IRs) and gustatory receptors (GRs). RESULTS: We used genome and transcriptome data to identify 141 ORs, 28 GRs and 25 IRs in BPH; 135 ORs, 18 GRs and 16 IRs in WBPH; and 37 ORs, 14 GRs and 6 IR

Behavior change techniques in mobile apps targeting self-harm in young people: a systematic review.

Despite the high prevalence of self-harm among young people, as well as their extensive use of mobile apps for seeking support with their mental healthcare, it is unclear whether the design of mobile apps aimed at targeting self-harm is underpinned by behavior change techniques (BCTs). To systematically analyze and identify (a) what BCTs and (b) what theories are present in self-harm apps for young people in an attempt to understand their active components. Systematic searches in Apple store, followed by thorough screening, were conducted to identify free mobile apps targeting self-harm in you
