BACKGROUND: Fipronil which has initiated the new generation of insecticides and possesses greater affinity at GABA receptors in insects than humans is supposed to be safer than the old generation of insecticides. Dermal and inhalation exposure to fipronil has not been reported in the literature.

We present a 56-year-old woman with an infiltrate in the right middle lobe secondary to obstruction of the right middle lobe bronchus by extensive submucosal fibrosis. This unique stenotic lesion of a central bronchus was caused by a domestically acquired localised central obstructive bronchitis due to the inhalation of mixed dust fibers, in the absence of advanced silicosis. This complication is a rare presentation of the myriad of pulmonary diseases associated with mineral dust inhalation.

METHODS: Causes of death and treatment effects were analyzed in a group of 82 patients admitted from January 1994 to April 1998.
RESULTS: Among the 82 patients, 33 patients were cured, 11 patients were improved and 38 patients died. Among the 38 cases of death, 24 patients died directly of inhalation injury and 14 patients died of other complications.

In a prospective randomized study, the efficacy of local anaesthetic inhalation during premedication before bronchoscopic examination was evaluated. In this two year retrospective review, 86 cases of chlorine gas inhalation from 49 medical facilities were treated with nebulized sodium bicarbonate on the recommendation of the Kentucky Regional Poison Center.
