Validation of the Neonatal Satisfaction Survey (NSS-8) in six Norwegian neonatal intensive care units: a quantitative cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: The experience of having their new-borns admitted to an intensive care unit (NICU) can be extremely distressing. Subsequent risk of post-incident-adjustment difficulties are increased for parents, siblings, and affected families. Patient and next of kin satisfaction surveys provide key indicators of quality in health care. Methodically constructed and validated survey tools are in short supply and parents' experiences of care in Neonatal Intensive Care Units is under-researched. This paper reports a validation of the Neonatal Satisfaction Survey (NSS-8) in six Norwegian NICUs. MET

Disposable diapers decrease the incidence of neonatal infections compared to cloth diapers in a level II neonatal intensive care unit.

OBJECTIVE: To study whether disposable diapers decrease the incidence of neonatal infections compared with cloth diapers in a level II neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). METHOD AND MATERIAL: All neonates admitted to the NICU and having duration of stay >48 h were enrolled. Those babies with signs and symptoms of infection were screened with septic screen and/or blood culture. RESULTS: The primary outcome of the study was incidence of probable sepsis. Of 253 babies enrolled in the study period, probable sepsis was present in 101 (39.9%) infants in the total study group and was higher in clo

Keeping Your Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Clean: The Hospital Environment as a Potential Source of Health Care-Associated Infections.

The patient's environment is an important (and often overlooked) source of pathogen exposure for patients in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) setting. Environmental surfaces in the NICU, including those frequently touched during the course of patient care, may be contaminated with potential pathogens. In this review, we highlight environmental reservoirs that lead to health care-associated infection risks in the NICU environment and provide examples from medical literature. Finally, we provide a few suggested interventions to mitigate these environmental risks in your NICU.

Top Ten Tips Palliative Care Clinicians Should Know About Caring for Children in Neonatal and Pediatric Intensive Care Units.

Over the past several years, pediatric critical care units increasingly count on the expert advisement of palliative care specialists. Given the limited availability of pediatric palliative care specialists, all palliative care clinicians may be required to care for pediatric patients and their families. Special considerations in caring for these patients include the relative importance of prognosis, involvement of child life, music and pet therapy, incorporation of parents in end-of-life rituals, care for siblings, use of medical technology, and prolonged duration of stay. The following top 1

Family Integrated Care (FICare) in Level II Neonatal Intensive Care Units: study protocol for a cluster randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Every year, about 15 million of the world's infants are born preterm (before 37 weeks gestation). In Alberta, the preterm birth rate was 8.7% in 2015, the second highest among Canadian provinces. Approximately 20% of preterm infants are born before 32 weeks gestation (early preterm), and require care in a Level III neonatal intensive care unit (NICU); 80% are born moderate (32 weeks and zero days [320/7] to 336/7 weeks) and late preterm (340/7 to 366/7 weeks), and require care in a Level II NICU. Preterm birth and experiences in the NICU disrupt early parent-infant relationships an

Prediction by maternal risk factors of neonatal intensive care admissions: evaluation of >59,000 women in national managed care programs.

OBJECTIVE: Managed care plans have adopted risk assessment tools as part of pregnancy disease state management strategies to assist in reducing poor pregnancy outcomes and related costs. We evaluated the relationships of maternal risk factors to determine which pregnancy risk factors were associated with neonatal intensive care unit (levels II and III) admission. STUDY DESIGN: Risk assessments were performed through perinatal telephone interviews of nurses with 59, 861 pregnant women during 1996 and 1997 calendar years as part of managed care maternity risk screening and education programs. Assessment of neonatal intensive care units design and implementation of infant and family centered developmental care guidelines in France.

INTRODUCTION: In recent years, neonatal care has undergone major transformations, moving toward a philosophy of Infant and Family Centered Developmental Care (IFCDC). This shift includes promoting parental involvement and adapting neonatal unit architecture accordingly. In France, the GREEN of the French Neonatal Society has issued recommendations to support this evolution, but little data exist on their implementation. METHODS: A nationwide survey was conducted from February to May 2025 across all 60 level III maternity hospitals in mainland France. A 25-question online form was distributed

Experiencing acute genomic care: perspectives from parents in the neonatal and paediatric intensive care units towards rapid genomic sequencing.

Rapid genomic sequencing (rGS) is increasingly used in neonatal and paediatric intensive care units (ICUs) to inform diagnosis and guide management of critically ill infants and children. Although rGS has a high diagnostic yield and potential to influence treatment and care planning decisions, little is known about how families experience rGS in the ICU and the emotional and contextual factors influencing their testing-related decisions. We conducted semi-structured interviews with twenty-three parents of infants who consented to rGS in an ICU at two tertiary hospitals in Toronto, Ontario, Can

Telomere Length in Preterm Infants: A Promising Biomarker of Early Adversity and Care in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit?

Preterm infants present an immature neurobehavioral profile at birth, even in absence of severe brain injuries and perinatal complications. As such, they require a long-lasting hospitalization in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), which is thought to grant at-risk newborns' survival, but still entails a number of physical, painful, and socio-emotional stressors. Hence, preterm birth and NICU stay represent an early adverse experience, which has been linked to detrimental consequences for neurological, neuro-endocrinal, behavioral, and socio-emotional development, as well as to disease la

A European Society of Paediatric and Neonatal Intensive Care (ESPNIC) survey of European critical care management of young people.

UNLABELLED: Adolescents have specific healthcare needs distinct from adults or younger children secondary to anatomical, physiological and socio-behavioural differences. Healthcare providers have been slow to address this, leading the UK Department of Health (2011) to publish 'You're Welcome' quality criteria for services for young people. (In the UK, the term young people is preferred to adolescent.) These generic criteria poorly fit the critical care environment, omitting key issues whilst insisting upon irrelevant standards. But as young people are infrequent patients for any individual uni

Content Validity of the Spanish Version of the Parental Stressor Scale: Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

BACKGROUND: There are few validated instruments that specifically measure the stress experienced by parents of babies admitted to neonatal intensive care units. The Parental Stress Scale: Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, developed by M. Miles et al in 1987, translated and validated in several languages, is a questionnaire that comprehensively measures parental stress in these units. The objective was to perform the translation, cross-cultural adaptation, and content validation of the Parental Stress Scale: Neonatal Intensive Care Unit to assess the stress experienced by parents of babies admitted

Risk factors and short-term respiratory outcomes associated with unplanned extubations during neonatal intensive care.

BACKGROUND: Unplanned extubation (UE) represents an unwanted adverse event in neonatal intensive care. Although skin-to-skin care (SSC) in intubated infants receiving mechanical ventilation (MV) is challenging, its impact on the incidence of UEs has not been reported. PURPOSE: To determine the incidence, infant characteristics, and short-term respiratory outcomes of UEs in a unit applying SSC as standard of care also during MV. METHODS: Single-center retrospective cohort study including all infants receiving MV in a Swedish tertiary care center during 2021-2023. UE incidence was calculated p

Electronic Prescribing in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit: Analysis of Prescribing Errors and Risk Factors.

Patients admitted to neonatal intensive care units are up to eight times more likely to experience medication errors than patients admitted to adult intensive care units. Prescribing errors account for up to 74% of medication errors. Electronic prescribing has been postulated as a tool to reduce errors. The objective was to analyse prescribing errors with the e-prescribing system and risk factors. All patients who were admitted for at least 24 h and who received active pharmacological treatment during the study period were included. Prescriptions were made using electronic assisted prescriptio

Assessing fluid responsiveness with ultrasound in the neonatal intensive care setting: the mini-fluid challenge.

The mini-fluid challenge (MFC) can guide individualised fluid therapy and prevent fluid overload and associated morbidity in adult intensive care patients. This ultrasound test is based on the Frank-Starling principles to assess dynamic fluid responsiveness, but limited MFC data exists for newborns. This brief report describes the feasibility of the MFC in 12 preterm infants with late onset sepsis and 5 newborns with other pathophysiology. Apical views were used to determine the changes in left ventricular stroke volume before and after a 3 ml/kg fluid bolus was given over 5 min. Four out of t
