Crack cocaine-dependent individuals (CCDI) present abnormalities in both social adjustment and decision making, but few studies have examined this association. This study investigated cognitive and social performance of 30 subjects (CCDI × controls); CCDI were abstinent for 2 weeks. Anthropometric, cephalometric, and dental data from 23 subjects (12 males and 11 females) afflicted with myotonic dystrophy were compared to similar data from normal subjects who participated in the Iowa Facial Growth Study. Five patients with recurrent, lateral rectus palsy in childhood, examined at the University of Iowa Hospitals over a period of 22 years, are reported. During the same period, 131 abducens nerve palsy patients, younger than 18 years of age, were evaluated. Eighteen similar patients, most single case reports, are reviewed from the literature. Health care professionals have a high risk for being injured while moving patients manually. The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics (UIHC) realized a need to reduce injuries suffered during patient movement. A UIHC multidisciplinary task force consulted the latest research, trialed products, and involved employees in selecting equipment for and implementing a safe patient handling program. OBJECTIVE: To review the outcomes of children with submucous cleft palate who also have velopharyngeal insufficiency (VPI).
METHODS: A retrospective chart review was carried out at a tertiary care academic centre of all patients who had VPI with a submucous cleft palate. The University of Iowa Cleft Palate registry parameters encompassing nasality (hyper- and hyponasality) were compared pre- and postoperatively.
RESULTS: Preliminary results demonstrate a significant, stable improvement in children who underwent palatal surgery for VPI.

During the week of July 7-13, a total of 30 human West Nile virus illness cases were reported from four states (Arizona, California, Colorado, and Iowa). During 2004, a total of 10 states have reported a total of 108 cases of human West Nile virus (WNV) illness to CDC through ArboNET. Of these, 66 (61%) were reported from Arizona. Sixty-one (58%) of the 108 cases occurred in males; median age of patients was 52 years (range: 1-84 years); dates of illness onset ranged from April 23 to July 5; and three cases were fatal.

Ten children (11 hips) who underwent triple innominate osteotomy between the ages of 11 and 16 years for treatment of symptomatic acetabular dysplasia and who had > 10 years of follow-up since operation were reviewed to determine if satisfactory results reported in an earlier review were maintained. Dental fluorosis occurs from overingestion of fluoride during tooth formation. However, there is little evidence in the literature on whether or how fluorosis prevalence and severity change over time after tooth eruption. Aonchotheca putorii is a parasitic nematode of the stomach and small intestines of many wild mammals. Although A putorii has been found in domestic cats in Iowa, it has not been reported to be pathogenic.
