To test the efficacy of topical indomethacin eye drops in preventing cystoid macular edema (CME) postcataract extraction, iris fluorescein and fundus fluorescein angiography were performed in two series of eyes that underwent intracapsular cataract extraction; 25 control eyes and another 25 eyes receiving indomethacin eye drops. Four years after controlled and standardized chemotherapy with diaminodiphenylsulfone (DDS), 316 patients in the leprosarium at Khokana, Nepal were re-examined for ophthalmological findings. The authors present their experience with the evaluation and follow-up of 62 patients with primary cysts of the iris, discuss their clinical and pathological features, and propose a simple classification for these lesions. The results suggest that the great majority of primary iris cysts, particularly those which arise from the iris pigment epithelial layers, are stationary lesions which rarely progress or cause visual complications. Although metastases from malignant melanomas of the ciliary body and choroid are common, similar tumors from the iris are rare. In this article seven such cases are described. They represent 3.5% of 196 cases in our files that were followed up for a minimum of five years where the tumor was confined to the iris and did not involve the ciliary body or the choroid. Cholic acid accumulates in both the ciliary body and the iris of the primate eye during in vitro incubations at 37 degrees C for 1 hr. Incubation at 0 degrees C depresses uptake in both tissues. The washout of preaccumulated cholic acid occurs some 3.4 times faster from the iris than from the ciliary body.
