BACKGROUND: Glutaraldehyde is a commonly used disinfectant in most hospitals. It is known to be an irritating agent to the airway. With the exception of one small-quantity (75 mL) ingestion, no large-volume ingestion has been previously reported.
CASE REPORT: A 59-year-old man presented with history of large-volume (500 mL) consumption of a solution containing 10% glutaraldehyde and developed respiratory distress, as well as gastrointestinal and kidney injury. His ingestion necessitated a feeding jejunostomy tube placement and tracheostomy. His condition improved with supportive care and he w…

We report here the isolation of Mucor velutinosus from multiple blood cultures performed on samples from Broviac catheters and culture of a Broviac insertion-site wound sample from a 6-year-old boy with a history of intestinal failure secondary to chronic intestinal pseudo-obstruction, parenteral nutrition, and jejunostomy tube dependence. Examination of a slide from the culture revealed the presence of wide nonseptate hyphae with sporangiophores, columella, and chlamydospores. The fungal isolate was sent to the National Institutes of Health for further evaluation and was identified as Mucor v…

This report describes a patient who presented with a large gallstone obstructing the duodenal bulb, with the chief complaint of acute on chr … ons were performed to regain functionality of the bowel. This came in the form of a diverting gastrojejunostomy, with a distal jejunostomy and feeding tube inserted. The patient tolerated the procedure well, only remaining intubated postoperative due to her chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). She achieved a complete recovery and transitioned home.

We report the case of a male African patient who presented at day 8 of life with recurrent episodes of proximal small intestine occlusion, w … duodenal band. Because of the major concerns related to the patient and to the medical environment, jejunostomy for feeding was first performed to improve his weight. A year later the intestinal malrotation was cured by gastrojejunal bypass. The postoperative clinical course was favorable. The patient resumed a normal life and schooling. His BMI is currently …

INTRODUCTION: Boerhaave's syndrome is a rare condition involving spontaneous rupture of the oesophagus. The diagnosis is difficult and the prognosis depends on early diagnosis and treatment.
CASE REPORT: We report a case of spontaneous rupture of the oesophagus in a 70-year-old woman where the diagnosis was delayed. Initial treatment comprised dual antibiotic therapy and feeding via a jejunostomy. Three months later, direct suture of the oesophagus was performed successfully. A routine pleural biopsy performed during the surgery revealed pleural tuberculosis. Antituberculous treatment was giv…

Jejunogastric intussusception is a rare but potentially very serious complication of gastrectomy or gastrojejunostomy. To avoid mortality early diagnosis and prompt surgical intervention is mandatory. A young man presented with epigastric pain and bilous vomiting followed by haematemesis 15 years after vagotomy & gastrojejunostomy for chronic duodenal ulcer. At presentation the patient was in shock and an emergency laparotomy was done after resuscitation. At laparotomy a retrograde type II JGI was found and managed by resection of the affected segment and partial gastrectomy and jejuno - jejun…

Two-third gastrectomy or supplementary gastrectomy was performed on 13 patients, between July 2, 1986 and September 30, 1988. Continuity of the gastro-intestinal tract was restored by end-to-side gastrojejunostomy according to Roux-en-Y. An antireflux valve according to Rumpf was inserted 15 cm below the gastroenteroanastomosis, and end-to-side jejunostomy was performed about six centimetres below the valve. This surgical method was applied to six patients for treatment for alkaline gastritis. The same method was used on another seven patients to prevent development of alkaline gastritis. All …

Malignant duodenal obstruction is a common issue affecting up to 20% of patients with advanced gastrointestinal malignancies. Distal duodenal obstruction (DDO) poses unique surgical challenges, such as the need to drain the stomach and the proximal portions of the duodenum. The traditional approach, gastrojejunostomy, may not be as effective for relieving DDO, as gastrojejunostomy does not necessarily drain the duodenum. In this situation, a duodenojejunostomy could be more advantageous due to its ability to provide dual (stomach and duodenal) drainage. Here we present a case of a 75-year-old …

BACKGROUND: Although feeding jejunostomy (FJ) is commonly created during esophagectomy for postoperative enteral nutrition, it can be a cause of postoperative small bowel obstruction (SBO). We introduced a technique of feeding enterostomy using the round ligament of the liver (FERL) to reduce SBO. In this study, we aimed to clarify the efficacy of FERL in reducing the postoperative SBO compared with FJ.
METHODS: We assessed 400 consecutive patients who underwent esophagectomy with gastric tube reconstruction between 2011 and 2016, before and after the introduction of FERL (FJ, n = 200; FERL, …

Patients who cannot eat enough require alternatives to oral feeding. Tube feeding is one such method for patients with a functioning gut. The techniques for the placement of feeding tubes and diets for tube feeding have improved during the past 20 years. Comfortable thin-bore polyurethane tubes are replacing the thicker vinyl tubes. Long term access routes such as gastrostomy and jejunostomy are being done by endoscopic or radiological techniques. Pre-defined formula feeds have reduced the effort and labour involved in the preparation, storage and administration of blenderized tube feeds. Howe…

Two children with incidentally-diagnosed ectopic pancreatic tissue in the jejunum at surgery for extrahepatic biliary atresia (EHBA) and choledochal cyst (CC) are reported. No case has been reported in the literature describing the association of a CC with ectopic pancreas, and only one case of EHBA associated with ectopic pancreas has been reported. We believe that incidentally-detected ectopic pancreatic tissue should be excised, even though the patient is symptom-free, in order to prevent the risk of serious complications due to either the mass effect or the potential for acute pancreatitis
