"Resistance leads to self-destruction": how an (a)political strategy helped Karl von Frisch succeed during the Nazi era.

Karl von Frisch, one of the leading zoologists of the twentieth century and co-founder of the Journal of Comparative Physiology A, has been frequently portrayed as an opponent of the Nazi regime because he, as a 'quarter-Jew,' faced the threat of forced retirement from his position as a professor at the University of Munich during the Third Reich. However, doubts about an active opposition role have surfaced in recent years. A litmus test for assessing the validity of this notion is provided by our discovery that four of the six core members of the anti-Nazi resistance group 'White Rose'-Sophi

Religious Disaffiliates' Experiences and Challenges with Sex, Sexuality, and Body Image.

In recent years, an increasing number of ultra-Orthodox Jews have left their insular communities, choosing instead to lead a secular life. This article illuminates their perceptions and experiences related to sexuality, sexual behavior, and sexual health. Based on thematic analysis of 37 in-depth, semi-structured interviews with ultra-Orthodox disaffiliates, we found that sexual experiences have played a decisive role in the disaffiliates' lives. First, some participants shared that experiencing sexual abuse during childhood led them to disaffiliate. Second, prior to disaffiliating, participan…

This complicates attempts to judge the morality of the work of the Rüdin school as a single unit.

[Circumcision: history, religion and law].

The aim of this article is to describe the circumcision procedure during history, its therapeutic and preventive goals, with focus on bioethical, economic and law issues. The origins of this practice are lost in antiquity. It was performed since 3000 BC by the Egyptians for hygienic and religious reasons. Moreover, male circumcision is a religious commandment in Judaism and Islam, and it is customary in some Oriental Orthodox and other Christian churches of Africa. Nowadays, circumcision is performed as a routine procedure by the Jews and the Muslims for religious reasons. The world prevalence…

MEFV, TNFRSF1A and CARD15 mutation analysis in Behçet's disease.

OBJECTIVES: Given the pathological similarities between Behçet's disease (BD), Familial Mediterranean fever (FMF), TNF receptor-associated periodic syndrome (TRAPS) and Crohn's disease (CD) we evaluated the frequency of mutations and polymorphisms in MEFV, TNFRSF1A and CARD15 in Israeli BD patients of either Jewish or Arab descent. METHODS: Fifty-four BD patients (11 Jews and 43 Arabs), evaluated with respect to the entire spectrum of BD disease manifestations, were granted a systemic severity score for BD. An association between BD manifestations and MEFV, TNFRSF1A and CARD15 variants was an…

Population-based Tay-Sachs screening among Ashkenazi Jewish young adults in the 21st century: Hexosaminidase A enzyme assay is essential for accurate testing.

Tay-Sachs disease (TSD) carrier screening, initiated in the 1970s, has reduced the birth-rate of Ashkenazi Jews with TSD worldwide by 90%. Recently, several nationwide programs have been established that provide carrier screening for the updated panel of Jewish genetic diseases on college campuses and in Jewish community settings. The goals of this study were to determine the performance characteristics of clinical TSD testing in college- and community-based screening programs and to determine if molecular testing alone is adequate in those settings. Clinical data for TSD testing were retrospe…

Huntington disease in subjects from an Israeli Karaite community carrying alleles of intermediate and expanded CAG repeats in the HTT gene: Huntington disease or phenocopy?

We report a cluster of patients from a Karaite Jew community with a movement disorder suggestive of Huntington disease (HD), in some cases associated with repeat lengths below the edge of 36 CAG repeats. The study describes the clinical and genetic features of four patients who were followed over several years. Patients belonged to an inbred family in whom progressive chorea, manifesting predominantly with dystonia and cerebellar features, developed during middle age. Although severe psychiatric symptoms ultimately developed in two of the four patients, cognitive function remained reasonably w

[Screening for hereditary neuromuscular disorders with molecular genetic methods in the Roma population of Hungary].

Recent medical genetic research has identified a number of novel, or previously known, but rare conditions, caused by private founder mutations. The Finnish and Ashkenazi Jew populations provide the best examples for identifying genes in unique genetic disorders. In these populations, research efforts and high-level medical services resulted in intense improvements of medical care and in organization of population-based screening programs. Hereditary disorders of the Roma populations are known for a long time. The genetic background of these diseases has been established by extensive molecular

National health budgets for expensive orphan drugs: Gaucher disease in Israel as a model.

Drugs for orphan diseases are often disproportionately costly, although the patient population is by definition small. In Israel, with a high percentage of Ashkenazi Jews and therefore many patients with Gaucher disease, the expense of enzyme replacement therapy for all patients would be prohibitive. For this reason, with approval of enzyme replacement therapy in Israel, the low-dose regimen (30 U/kg/month), less than one quarter of the manufacturer's original recommended dosage, was instituted as the starting regimen. A Gaucher Committee of medical experts under the auspices of the Ministry o…

Retinol concentration in maternal and cord serum: its relation to birth weight in healthy mother-infant pairs.

BACKGROUND: Vitamin A is an essential micronutrient for the development and growth of the fetus. The objective of this study was to identify a possible association between low serum retinol and birth weight in healthy mother-infant pairs in Southern Israel. A secondary objective was to examine ethnic differences in maternal and cord serum retinol. METHODS: Serum retinol was measured at delivery from pairs of healthy mothers and healthy mature newborns. RESULTS: Of the 313 mother-infant pairs studied, 56% were Jews and 44% Bedouins. The proportion of infants with birth weight of 2500-2999 g w…

Tay-Sachs disease screening and counseling families at risk for metabolic disease.

Carrier testing for Tay-Sachs disease should be offered to couples when at least one individual is of Ashkenazi Jewish (carrier frequency 1/30), Pennsylvania Dutch, Southern Louisiana Cajun, or Eastern Quebec French Canadian descent. Ideally, testing is done prior to conception. For Ashkenazi Jews, in whom DNA testing identifies 99.9% of carriers, DNA testing is the preferred method to ascertain carriers [14]. For non-Jewish individuals seeking carrier testing, enzyme assay should be done initially and positive or indeterminate results should be confirmed by DNA mutation analysis. If only one …

Parity, oral contraceptives, and the risk of ovarian cancer among carriers and noncarriers of a BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutation.

BACKGROUND: Multiparity and the use of oral contraceptives reduce the risk of ovarian cancer, but their effects on this risk in women with a BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutation are unclear. METHODS: We conducted a population-based case-control study of ovarian cancer among Jewish women in Israel. Women were tested for the two founder mutations in BRCA1 and the one founder mutation in BRCA2 that are known to be common among Jews. We estimated the effects of parity and oral-contraceptive use on the risk of ovarian cancer in carriers and noncarriers in separate analyses that included all control women, who …

Familial mediterranean fever - a review and update.

Familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) is an autosomal recessive disease, which primarily affects populations surrounding the Mediterranean basin. The disease occurs predominantly in Turks, Armenians, Arabs, and Sephardic Jews. FMF is characterized by recurrent attacks of fever and peritonitis, pleuritis, arthritis or erysipelas-like erythema. Amyloidosis causing renal failure is one of the most severe complications of the disease. In 1997, the gene associated with FMF (MEFV) was isolated. It encodes a protein consisting of 781 amino acids and is expressed mainly in leukocytes. It was named "pyrin…

Genotype-phenotype correlation in two frequent mutations and mutation update in type III glycogen storage disease.

Deficiency of glycogen debranching enzyme (AGL) activity causes glycogen storage disease type III (GSD-III). Generalized loss of AGL activity results in GSD-IIIa, and muscle-specific retention of AGL activity results in GSD-IIIb. To date, no common mutation has been described among GSD-III patients, except for three alleles; two linked specifically with GSD-IIIb, and the third found only in North African Jews with GSD-IIIa. Here we report two frequent mutations, each of which was found in the homozygous state in multiple patients, and each of which was associated with a subset of clinical phen…

Why are the majority of hereditary cases of early-onset breast cancer sporadic? A simulation study.

Population-based studies, including those of Ashkenazi Jews, have observed that at least 50% of women with early-onset breast cancer who carry a germ line mutation in BRCA1 or BRCA2 do not report a family history of the disease. That is, the majority of "hereditary" cases are "sporadic." Furthermore, the great majority of "familial breast cancers" are not hereditary. We conducted a simulation study to evaluate the probability that a woman with early-onset breast cancer is a mutation carrier, given the number of affected relatives, for a range of plausible values of allele frequency (0.001-0.01…

Connexin26 mutations associated with nonsyndromic hearing loss.

OBJECTIVE: Mutations in the GJB2 gene are a major cause of autosomal recessive and sporadic types of congenital deafness. The 35delG mutation is the most frequent type of mutation in white populations. However, several other forms were reported, such as 167delT among Ashkenazi Jews and R143W in Africans. The present study investigated the mutations of connexin26 (Cx26) found in patients with nonsyndromic hearing loss (NSHL) and newborns in the Korean population. STUDY DESIGN: The sequencing data for 147 unrelated patients with congenital NSHL and 100 audiologically screened newborns were incl…
