System biology approaches identified novel biomarkers and their signaling pathways involved in renal cell carcinoma with different human diseases.

Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is a type of cancer that develops in the renal epithelium of the kidney. It is responsible for approximately 3% of adult malignancies, and 90-95% of neoplasms originate from the kidney. Advances in tumor diagnosis, innovative immune therapeutics, and checkpoint inhibitors-based treatment options improved the survival rate of patients with RCC accompanied by different risk factors. RCC patients with diabetes, hepatitis C virus (HCV), or obesity (OB) may have a comorbidity, and finding the risk factor for better clinical treatment is an urgent issue. Therefore, the stu

Prevalence of Human Papillomavirus Infection in the Head and Neck Area of Patients After Kidney Transplantation Treated With Immunosuppressive Therapy.

The introduction of new and stronger immunosuppressive agents has significantly improved the overall survival rate of patients with transplanted organs; however, prolonged use of immunosuppressive agents has led to severe complications, such as the development of de novo malignant cancers. The incidence of malignant tumors is 3 to 5 times greater among renal transplant recipients than that of the overall population. Traditional neoplasms of the head and neck region are associated with the addiction to smoking and drinking alcohol. However, recent studies indicate that cancers of the throat, to

[Perinephric liposarcoma mimicking cystic renal tumor].

Liposarcoma is one of the most common primary retroperitoneal neoplasms, and the perinephric region is a frequent location for them. Liposarcomas show a variety of radiographic features in terms of histological types and tumor sizes, so the specific diagnosis of liposarcoma is often difficult. We present a unique case of perinephric dedifferentiated liposarcoma mimicking cystic renal tumor. A 71-year-old man presented himself at our hospital with a palpable mass in his upper right abdomen. Abdominal computerized tomography (CT) revealed a well-defined cystic mass at the lower pole of the right

A case report of primary osteosarcoma originating from kidney.

RATIONALE: Primary osteosarcoma of the kidney is a very rare subtype of renal neoplasms. There are only 27 cases reported in the literature since 1936. In addition, it has a high risk of metastasis and very low survival rate. PATIENT'S CONCERNS: In this report, we present a case of unique large osteosarcoma originated from the left kidney (21 cm × 18 cm × 11 cm) with lung metastasis. A 48-year-old female patient presented with intermittent abdominal distension and gross hematuria. DIAGNOSES: A computed tomography scan of the abdomen confirmed a large solid, partly calcified mass in the left

Ablative Therapies for Renal Tumors: Patient Selection, Treatment Planning, and Follow-Up.

The increased use of abdominal imaging has led to a major increase in small renal tumors incidence particularly in the elderly population. Their management is evolving with the development of percutaneous ablation, particularly radiofrequency ablation, cryoablation, and microwave ablation. The typical indications that must be validated by a multidisciplinary committee include solid tumors less than 3cm in patients with multiple comorbidity factors (including age), contraindications to surgery, hereditary renal cancer, bilateral renal tumors, solitary kidney, pre-existing chronic kidney disease

Primary Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the Kidney Associated with Multiple Staghorn Calculi: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Primary squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the kidney is an extremely rare malignancy, usually originating from the renal pelvis due to continuous irritation from infections and nephrolithiasis. However, it can also arise from parenchyma. It has rarely been reported in the literature. Renal squamous cell carcinoma often presents late with nonspecific symptoms such as flank pain and hematuria. It is typically linked to kidney stones, and because of its nonspecific clinical symptoms and radiological characteristics, patients often seek medical attention only in the advanced stages of t

Risk of Subsequent Primary Kidney Cancer After Another Malignancy: A Population-based Study.

BACKGROUND: Population-based data on the development of kidney cancer as a second malignant neoplasm following the diagnosis of other common malignancies are rare. This clinical scenario has been evaluated within the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The SEER-9 database (1973-2013) was queried using the SEER*Stat program to determine the standardized incidence ratios (SIRs) of kidney cancer development following each one of 10 common invasive malignancies (colorectal, breast, prostate, lung, thyroid, corpus uteri, urinary bladder, kidney/renal

Rectal PEComa Mimicking Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumor on Endoscopic Ultrasound.

Perivascular epithelioid cell tumors (PEComas) are rare mesenchymal neoplasms that commonly originate from the kidney, uterus, or lung, with gastrointestinal involvement being exceptionally uncommon. This case highlights the first known use of endoscopic ultrasound and endoscopic tunnel biopsy technique in diagnosing rectal PEComa. A 66-year-old woman presented with acute rectal bleeding. Imaging revealed a distal rectal mass 7.4 cm in diameter that was initially suspected to be a gastrointestinal stromal tumor. Endoscopic ultrasound with fine-needle aspiration and subsequent endoscopic tunnel

Desmoplastic small round cell tumor of the kidney with bone metastasis: A case report.

Desmoplastic small round cell tumor (DSRCT) is a rare and highly aggressive sarcoma that predominantly affects adolescent and young adult males. DSRCT typically arises from the serosal surface of the abdominal cavity with a high propensity for metastatic disease and, subsequently, poor prognosis. The diagnosis is often challenging due to its nonspecific clinical presentation and overlapping imaging features with other abdominopelvic entities. Consequently, imaging, particularly computed tomography (CT) and positron emission tomography-computed tomography (PET-CT), plays a central role in the i

Undifferentiated Adenocarcinoma With Rhabdoid Features of the Stomach: A Case Report.

Rhabdoid tumors are rare and aggressive neoplasms, first described in the kidney, but they have also been reported in various extrarenal sites, including the gastrointestinal tract. Gastric involvement is particularly unusual, often presenting as an adenocarcinoma with rhabdoid features. This type of tumor poses a diagnostic challenge, requiring histological, immunohistochemical, and cytogenetic analyses. Due to the aggressive nature of these tumors, early diagnosis and prompt surgical intervention are essential, although the prognosis remains poor. We report a case of a man with an upper gast

Laparoscopic excision of an incidental vascular tumor.

Anastomosing hemangioma (AH) is an exceedingly rare benign vascular tumor, often mistaken for malignant neoplasms due to its histological features. First described in 2009, AH has been documented in various sites, including the kidney, liver, and adrenal gland. This report presents a 64-year-old man who, following a bicycle accident, underwent imaging that revealed a nodule suspicious for a paraganglioma in the right para-caval region. Despite the high radiotracer uptake on 68Ga-DOTANOC PET scan, which suggested paraganglioma, the patient remained asymptomatic and laboratory tests ruled out ex

Clear cell myoepithelioma of palate with emphasis on clinical and histological differential diagnosis.

Myoepitheliomas account for less than 1% of all salivary gland tumors and mostly occur in the parotid gland and palate. A 58-year old male patient reported to the Outpatient Department of PMS College of Dental Science and Research (Kerala, India) with a slow growing painless swelling on the palate for 4 years. Pleomorphic adenoma, basal cell adenoma, myoepithelioma, cyst adenoma, lipoma, neurofibroma, neurilemmoma and leiomyoma were considered. Histopathology revealed a thinly encapsulated tumor composed mainly of sheets of clear cells mixed with cells having eosinophilic cytoplasm. Histopatho

A masquerading mass: an unusual presentation of IgG4-related systemic disease with tubulointerstitial nephritis.

IgG4 tubulointerstitial nephritis (IgG4-TIN) is the most common form of IgG4 renal disease. When IgG4-TIN is accompanied by other systemic manifestations the disease is known as IgG4-related systemic disease (IgG4-RSD). IgG4-RSD is well recognised in the form of tubulointerstitial nephritis (IgG4-related TIN) and may present with renal failure by mimicking neoplasms (tumefactive lesions) or with both features. We describe a case of IgG4-RSD initially presenting as a submandibular mass and subsequently presenting two years later with secondary infiltration of the kidney causing tubulointerstiti

Bronchial carcinoma in a red-shouldered hawk (Buteo lineatus).

Respiratory neoplasms are rare in birds. This report describes carcinoma of the bronchial epithelium in a red-shouldered hawk (Buteo lineatus) that presented with weakness and lethargy lasting 4 days that progressed to seizures. Grossly, the caudal air sac and coelomic cavity contained approximately 15 ml of dark brown cloudy fluid that displaced the intestines cranially. Nodular plaques were present on the viscera and air sacs. Microscopic examination of tissues revealed a mass that expanded the bronchial lumen and was composed of papillary proliferations of rows of small cuboidal epithelial

Lympholeukemia in madai Pagrus major in Japan.

Lympholeukemia has been occurring to an epizootic extent with mass mortality in 1 and 2 yr old madai (= Japanese red sea bream) Pagrus major in the winter season (October-May) in the western regions of Japan since 1975. Diseased fish displayed severe anemia and markedly increased numbers of neoplastic lymphocytoid and lymphoblastoid cells in the blood. Neoplastic cells originated in the splenic lymphatic cells and systemically caused severe metastatic lesions in the heart, liver, kidney, digestive tracts, gills and the lateral musculature. Electron microscopy revealed adeno-like viral particle

Extraskeletal osteosarcoma of the mandibular salivary gland in a dog.

A 14-year-old spayed female shepherd/collie crossbred dog had a 6 x 4-cm mass excised from below the right ear. The partially encapsulated, neoplastic mass had a necrotic core and was embedded in the mandibular salivary gland. Histologically, the mass was composed of numerous multinucleate giant cells and large, oval, pleomorphic cells that produced osteoid. Neoplastic cells were immunoreactive for vimentin and actin but not for keratin, desmin, or S-100 protein. At postmortem examination 1 month later, an 11-cm spherical mass had recurred at the surgical site, and there were metastatic nodule

Ruptured jejunal gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) presenting with acute hemoperitoneum in a young adult with autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD).

Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) are rare mesenchymal neoplasms of the gastrointestinal tract, most commonly arising in the stomach and less frequently in the small intestine. Jejunal GISTs often present with vague symptoms, leading to delayed diagnosis, while acute presentations with hemodynamic instability are uncommon and usually result from tumor necrosis or rupture. We report a 37-year-old man with autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease who presented with acute abdominal pain and shock requiring immediate resuscitation and intensive care admission. Ultrasonography revealed fr

Spontaneous Tumor Lysis Syndrome as a Complication of Metastatic Breast Cancer: A Rare Case Report.

Tumor lysis syndrome (TLS) is a well-established potentially fatal condition which is considered an oncologic emergency. TLS typically develops from the rapid lysis of neoplastic cells after the commencement of cytotoxic treatment in patients with some kinds of lymphomas, especially the Burkitt variant, and acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Spontaneous TLS (STLS), a variant of TLS occurring in the absence of chemotherapy or radiation therapy, has been observed in non-Hodgkin lymphoma and acute leukemia, and rarely in solid neoplasms. In this paper, we present a 62-year-old woman with STLS, seconda

Genetic variants associated with platelet count are predictive of human disease and physiological markers.

Platelets play an important role in hemostasis and other aspects of vascular biology. We conducted a meta-analysis of platelet count GWAS using data on 536,974 Europeans and identified 577 independent associations. To search for mechanisms through which these variants affect platelets, we applied cis-expression quantitative trait locus, DEPICT and IPA analyses and assessed genetic sharing between platelet count and various traits using polygenic risk scoring. We found genetic sharing between platelet count and counts of other blood cells (except red blood cells), in addition to several other q
