A Comparative Analysis of Microscopy, Coproantigen Serology, and Nested Multiplex PCR in the Laboratory Diagnosis of Entamoeba histolytica Infection.

Objectives  Amoebiasis is caused by the most common intestinal protozoan parasite Entamoeba histolytica . This parasite causes amoebic colitis, which is manifested by diarrhea, followed by dysentery. The laboratory diagnosis of intestinal amoebiasis in most cases is by microscopic examination of stool samples. Other nonroutine methods include coproantigen enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) from stool samples, serum ELISA for antibodies, stool culture, isoenzyme analysis, and polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The present study aimed to comparatively analyze the different diagnostic modali

Clinical and laboratory features of Strongyloides stercoralis infection at diagnosis and after treatment: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: The clinical and laboratory characterization of Strongyloides stercoralis infection at diagnosis and after treatment is still poorly defined. OBJECTIVES: The primary objective was to describe the pattern and frequency of clinical and laboratory characteristics associated with S. stercoralis infection. The secondary objectives were (a) comparison of characteristics reported in endemic versus non-endemic areas; and (b) the evaluation of the resolution of identified characteristics after treatment. METHODS: We searched PubMed, EMBASE, LILACS and CENTRAL up to May 2021. Eligible stud

Evolution of EBV seroprevalence and primary infection age in a French hospital and a city laboratory network, 2000-2016.

BACKGROUND: According to rare studies, the age at EBV primary infection (PI) has recently risen in some developed countries. A later age at infection is generally considered a risk factor for severe EBV PI, although few studies exist on this subject. Our investigation aimed to determine whether EBV seroprevalence and EBV PI epidemiology have evolved in France, and to what extent age and infection intensity (regarding biological parameters) are correlated. METHODS AND FINDINGS: We conducted a retrospective study of the following EBV serological tests databases: tests carried out at Grenoble Un

Men who have sex with men, risk behavior, and HIV infection: integrative analysis of clinical, epidemiological, and laboratory databases.

BACKGROUND: Centralized data collection and analytic tools facilitate tracing HIV transmission trends at the patient-population level with increasing resolution, complementing behavioral studies while avoiding sampling biases. By several measures, the rate of HIV infection among men who have sex with men (MSM) in Israel increased in the past several years more rapidly than was expected. We describe features of the data that connect this increase to behavioral changes. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed data from the national HIV reference laboratory and the national HIV and sexually transmi

Laboratory evidence of active HIV-1 infection in Canadians with hemophilia associated with administration of heat-treated factor VIII.

Heat-treated factor VIII has been implicated in the transmission of HIV to hemophiliacs. Previously, evidence has been limited to documenting cases of seroconversion following administration of heat-treated factor VIII. Here, we present evidence of active HIV infection, i.e., infected and not merely sensitized following factor VIII injections. Six Canadians with hemophilia had seroconverted during a longitudinal study of their HIV immune status. Two of the three patients tested by this method demonstrated HIV gag-specific sequences upon amplification by polymerase chain reaction. In addition,

Clinical and Laboratory Features of Serologically Confirmed EBV Infections in a Tertiary Hospital in Northern India (2018-2023).

INTRODUCTION: Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), a widely prevalent member of the herpesvirus family, is linked to a diverse range of clinical outcomes, extending from mild, self-limiting illnesses to serious systemic and hematological disorders. Although India shows a high rate of EBV seropositivity, comprehensive data regarding its clinical presentation and associated complications are still scarce. This study was undertaken to assess the seroprevalence, clinical features, and systemic complications of EBV infection across multiple departments of a tertiary care hospital in Northern India. METHODS:

Clinical, Laboratory and Prognostic Features of Nosocomial Infections Caused by Carbapenemase-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae in Pediatric Patients.

BACKGROUND: Carbapenemase-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae (CPKP) is a major cause of nosocomial infections in children, with high mortality. This study compared clinical features and outcomes between CPKP and carbapenem-susceptible K. pneumoniae (CSKP) infections in pediatric patients and identified independent risk factors for carbapenem resistance. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included pediatric patients with confirmed K. pneumoniae infections at a university hospital. Patients were categorized into CPKP and CSKP groups. Data on demographics, clinical features and laboratory res

How long should we keep clinical isolates involved in bone and joint infections in microbiology laboratories?

Bone and joint infections (BJI), particularly periprosthetic joint infections (PJI), remain major postoperative complications. Although international guidelines have clarified diagnostic criteria, recommendations on clinical strain preservation remain scarce. Microbiology laboratories routinely store isolates from severe infections, but protocols and storage duration vary widely. This narrative review synthesizes international and national guidelines (ICM, EBJIS, IDSA, SPILF), French regulatory texts, and published data on bacterial preservation techniques. Methods of conservation (serial subc

Correlation of Age and Laboratory Parameters with Urine Flow Cytometry and Culture Results in Patients with Urinary Tract Infections.

BACKGROUND: The diagnosis of urinary tract infection (UTI) remains a clinical challenge, with urine culture as the gold standard. In developing countries like Bosnia and Herzegovina, a high prevalence of antimicrobial resistance and frequent empirical treatment pose significant clinical challenges. Automated urine flow cytometry has emerged as a rapid tool to optimize diagnostic processes. OBJECTIVES: To determine the correlation of age, gender, and laboratory parameters-such as white blood cell (WBC) count, neutrophil count, and C-reactive protein (CRP)-with both urinary bacterial counts and

From laboratory to clinical application: a narrative review of bacteriophage therapy for antimicrobial-resistant infections in veterinary medicine.

Antimicrobial resistance poses one of the most critical challenges to global health, particularly within veterinary medicine, where antibiotic misuse contributes significantly to multidrug-resistant infections. Bacteriophages have re-emerged as promising biocontrol agents that can target resistant pathogens while preserving host microbiota and environmental balance. However, despite growing experimental evidence, therapeutic implementation remains constrained by heterogeneous methodologies, limited clinical validation, and fragmented regulatory frameworks. This narrative review critically appr

Changing antimicrobial prescribing patterns, and laboratory reporting in Enterococcus faecalis infective endocarditis at a tertiary Australian centre.

BACKGROUND: Enterococcus faecalis (E. faecalis) infective endocarditis (EFIE) treatment consists of a penicillin backbone and a synergistic agent (gentamicin or ceftriaxone). Due to the instability of aminopenicillins in continuous infusion in the outpatient context, benzylpenicillin is used as an alternative to ampicillin, though concern regarding reduced synergy with ceftriaxone has emerged. Clinical Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) provides MIC breakpoints for penicillin and ampicillin. European Committee for Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing (EUCAST) guidelines only provide breakpo
