Circumscribed supplementary motor area injury with gait apraxia including freezing of gait and shuffling gait: a case report.

Clinical findings in cases of injury circumscribed with SMA is no consensus. We report the case of a 60-year-old male with circumscribed SMA injury who showed freezing of gait, and shuffling gait. Twenty-one days after onset, the patient showed difficulties with the left leg swing in gait initiation (freezing of gait). In steady-state gait, the stride of the left leg swing was short (shuffling gait). Thirty-four days after onset, this phenomenon was not observed during gait. Circumscribed SMA injury can cause gait apraxia, including freezing and shuffling gait, such as in extensive SMA injury

Triathlon-related musculoskeletal injuries: a study on a Portuguese Triathlon Championship.

BACKGROUND: A triathlon consists of 3 modalities: swimming, cycling and running. Its higher training frequency, the environmental factors and extrinsic factors (technique and equipment) may lead to injuries. This study aimed to determine injury epidemiology in triathletes, as well as their type, location, mechanism of injury, and risk factors. METHODS: The sample was constituted of 174 triathletes who participated in the Triathlon Club Portuguese Championship, being 131 (75.3%) male, aged 18 to 70 years old (36.09±11.03). The measurement instrument was a questionnaire concerning the character

Blocking landing techniques in volleyball and the possible association with anterior cruciate ligament injury.

The number and type of landings performed after blocking during volleyball matches has been related to the potential risk of ACL injury. The aim of the present study was to determine whether gender affects the frequency of specific blocking landing techniques with potential risk of ACL injury from the perspective of foot contact and subsequent movement after the block used by volleyball players during competitive matches. Three matches involving four female volleyball teams (fourteen sets) and three matches involving four male volleyball teams (thirteen sets) in the Czech Republic were analyze

The long-term consequence of strength deficits after menisectomy.

This study was undertaken to investigate the long-term effects of a muscular imbalance of the knee extensors of both legs, resulting from a menisectomy and a subsequent training program. Sixteen subjects were tested at the end of an eight-week training program and again 28 months later. At the end of the training program strength deficits of 13% (maximum isometric torque) and 28% (maximum isokinetic torque) were found. During the 28-month follow-up a significant increase in the mean isometric torque of the operated leg and the mean isokinetic torque of both legs was observed (p < 0.05). This r

Changes in biomechanics and muscle activation in injured ballet dancers during a jump-land task with turnout (Sissonne Fermée).

Large impact loading with abnormal muscle activity and motion patterns may contribute to lower extremity injuries in ballet dancers. Yet, few studies investigated the influence of injury on the ballet movement. The purpose of this study was to find the neuromuscular and biomechanical characteristics in dancers with and without ankle injury during a jump-landing Sissonne Fermée task. Twenty-two ballet dancers were recruited and divided into the injured group (n = 11) and the uninjured group (n = 11). They performed a ballet movement called "Sissonne Fermée" with reflective markers and electrode

Editorial Commentary: Traumatic and Atraumatic Meniscal Root Injuries Can Occur Both Medially and Laterally: No Rule Without Exceptions!

It took a long time for meniscal root injuries to slowly gain scientific and clinical attention some 40 years after the first arthroscopic meniscal resection. Medial root injuries are mostly degenerative in nature and often are associated with obesity and varus deformity. However, lateral root injuries are more commonly traumatic in origin and are associated with anterior cruciate ligament injuries. But, there is no rule without an exception. Laterally, there are isolated root injuries without anterior cruciate ligament involvement and also nontraumatic root injuries that can be associated wit

Imaging of lower extremity trauma from Boston Marathon bombing.

The goal of this study is to describe the imaging features of lower extremity blast injuries in patients encountered in the radiology departments from the Boston Marathon bombings. A total of 115 patients presented to four acute care hospitals on April 15, 2013, 43 of whom presented with lower extremity injuries and were included in this study. The imaging findings of primary, secondary, tertiary, and quaternary blast injuries were evaluated. Forty-one of 43 patients sustained secondary blast injuries to the lower extremities with 31 patients (70 %) having retained shrapnel, seven patients (16

A Histologically Proven Case of Autoimmune Hepatitis with Eosinophilic Fasciitis.

Both autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) and eosinophilic fasciitis (EF) are known to be complicated by other autoimmune diseases. However, AIH complicated by EF has never been reported. We experienced a 58-year-old man with AIH complicated by EF. He was admitted to our hospital with acute hepatic injury and edema of the legs in April 201X. The etiologies of these symptoms were histologically proven as AIH and EF. The administration of prednisolone (PSL) drastically improved his liver injury and edema of the legs. When we make a diagnosis of AIH, we should carefully evaluate the physical findings, incl

Vastus lateralis and medialis muscular activation during frontal and sagittal single-leg jumps in sportswomen.

Introduction: Differences in the lateral and medial portions from quadriceps muscular activation during the execution of the jump can become a neuromuscular risk factor raising knee dynamic valgus and increasing the risk for anterior cruciate ligament injury. Objective: To determine the difference in the activation of the lateral and medial vastus using surface electromyography during single-leg jumps in the sagittal and frontal plane in female athletes. Materials and methods: This was a quantitative, cross-sectional study. A total of 64 female athletes participated. We carried out anthropomet

Biomechanical differences related to leg dominance were not found during a cutting task.

Previous studies have shown conflicting information regarding leg dominance as an etiological factor for the risk of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries. It remains unclear if lower extremity neuromechanical limb asymmetries exist in experienced athletes. The purpose of this study was to evaluate lower extremity neuromechanical effects of leg dominance in female collegiate soccer athletes during an unanticipated side-step cutting task. Twenty female collegiate soccer players completed an unanticipated side-step cutting task, using their dominant and non-dominant legs. Kinematic and kinet

Peroneal artery pseudo-aneurysm following blunt injury.

The peroneal artery is injured less frequently than the popliteal and tibial arteries, because of its anatomical relationships. Pseudo-aneurysm of the peroneal artery due to a blunt injury is a rare complication. These injuries are usually occult, but more have been identified with the introduction and increasing use of angiography, following a high clinical suspicion of the trauma team involved. We report a case of peroneal artery false aneurysm following blunt trauma, presented with intermittent haemorrhage. In trauma, isolated peroneal artery pseudo-aneurysms, although rare, may occur. [Clinical aspects and etiology of lymphedema of the lower limbs in adults].

Classical lymphedema, more than the most frequent complications, is the clinical manifestation of decompensated lymphopathies of the lower extremities. These edemas are supra-aponeurotic and always completely painless, when isolated. There are three types:distal lymphedema occurring on congenital lymphopathy, the most frequent, with are sudden onset with lymphangitis, usually insidious, intermittent, soon characterized by fibrosing edema of the toes and the ankle. Proximal lymphedema secondary to iliac nodes blocking, rarely benign, most of the time malignant and/or iatrogenic (surgery and/or

Decoding injury risk: Exploring the impact of asymptomatic hypermobility on lower limb injury risk factors in young female volleyball players.

Generalized hypermobility is associated with higher rates of musculoskeletal injuries, a trend also observed in volleyball. We aimed to investigate how asymptomatic hypermobility affects other suggested lower limb injury risk factors. Fifty female volleyball players (22 hypermobile, 28 non-hypermobile) were assessed using Beighton scores (BS) and lower limb injury risk factors based on the Landing Error Scoring System, single-leg dynamic balance, and Limb Symmetry Index (LSI) for single-leg hop and triple hop for distance. Spearman's correlations assessed relationships between BS and the risk

Dynamic postural stability for double-leg drop landing.

Dynamic postural stability has been widely studied for single-leg landing, but seldom considered for double-leg landing. This study aimed to evaluate the dynamic postural stability and the influence mechanism of muscle activities during double-leg drop landing. Eight recreationally active males and eight recreationally active females participated in this study and dropped individually from three heights (0.32 m, 0.52 m, and 0.72 m). Ground reaction force was recorded to calculate the time to stabilisation. Electromyographic activities were recorded for selected lower-extremity muscles. A multi

Kinematics of balance controls in people with chronic ankle instability during unilateral stance on a moving platform.

Balance control deficits resulting from ankle sprains are central to chronic ankle instability (CAI) and its persistent symptoms. This study aimed to identify differences in balance control between individuals with CAI and healthy controls (HC) using challenging single-leg balance tasks. Twenty-three CAI and 23 HC participants performed balance tasks on a force plate that either remained static or moved mediolaterally. Force and kinematic data were recorded to measure balance and joint movements. The CAI group showed significantly shorter time-to-boundary during static conditions but no signif
