Leiomyosarcomas are extremely rare primary cardiac tumours. A 46-year-old woman presenting with symptoms and signs of rapidly progressive left ventricular failure and apparent systemic lupus erythematosus was subsequently found to have a grade III/III left atrial leiomyosarcoma which was confirmed surgically. Pathology showed a cellular neoplasm arranged in fascicles with multinucleated giant cells, with areas of high grade sarcomatous change. The patient died seven months postoperatively with intractable heart failure. At autopsy, tumour infiltrated the pericardium, both atria and the right v…

Leiomyosarcoma of the small intestine is a malignant mesenchymal tumour composed of smooth muscle cells from the muscular coat or, rarely, from muscularis mucosae, which in the majority of cases is characterised by a clinically silent development and by an unfavorable prognosis. The considerable difficulty of obtaining a histological definition of the degree of malignancy of the leiomyosarcoma is also typical. The paper reports a clinical case and summarises its main clinical and anatomopathological aspects. In particular, the difficulties of clinical and histological diagnosis of the degree o…

An additional case of leiomyosarcoma of spermatic cord which brings the total reported number to 49, is described. The case is compared with the others and further data on histogenesis and histological behaviour of the tumor, are given. Surgical treatment and role of radiotherapy and chemotherapy, are discussed.

Leiomyosarcoma of the inferior vena cava is a rare disease with protean manifestations related to the location of the tumor. Urological manifestations of the disease are rare and include renal vein thrombosis and renovascular hypertension. Approximately 63 cases have been reported in the literature, with a striking female predominance. Presentation as an isolated suprarenal mass has not been reported previously. We discuss this unusual tumor and report a case that presented as an asymptomatic suprarenal mass.

A case is described of a patient found, at operation, to have two infiltrating leiomyosarcomas in the transverse colon. Study indicated them to be two separate primary lesions. Literature on leiomyosarcoma is reviewed.

Tumor rupture is a rare complication of uterine leiomyosarcoma. We report a case of ruptured uterine leiomyosarcoma diagnosed after the onset of abdominal pain following endoscopic examination of the lower gastrointestinal tract. The patient was a 56-year-old woman who was diagnosed with anemia at 48 years of age when she was first referred to our medical team. Contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed a 48 × 50 mm mass in the anterior wall of the uterine body, which was diagnosed as a uterine fibroid. After 8 years of regular follow-up once or twice a year, the patient devel…

INTRODUCTION: This narrative review, based on the current literature, aims to evaluate whether or not preoperative ultrasound can effectively distinguish between uterine leiomyosarcomas (ULMS) and leiomyomas (ULM).
EVIDENCE ACQUISITION: By using PubMed, Scopus and WOS, an extensive literature search was conducted to identify ultrasound characteristics that specifically differentiate uterine ULMS from ULM.
EVIDENCE SYNTHESIS: This review analyzed several ultrasound features to distinguish ULMS from ULM, including the maximum diameter of myometrial growth, the number of lesions (solitary/multi…

BACKGROUND: Primary hepatic leiomyosarcoma (PHL) is a rare malignant tumor and has non-specific clinical manifestations and imaging characteristics, making preoperative diagnosis challenging. Here, we report a case of PHL presenting primarily with fever, with computed tomography imaging showing a thick-walled hepatic lesion with low-density areas, resembling liver abscess.
CASE SUMMARY: The patient was a 34-year-old woman who presented with right upper abdominal pain and fever over 4 days before admission. Based on the patient's medical history, laboratory examinations, and imaging examinatio…

Visceral leiomyosarcoma is well described in dogs, but information about non-visceral locations and prevalence is lacking. The diagnosis of leiomyosarcoma is challenging without a gold standard, and often includes the use of immunohistochemical (IHC) stains. We used defined histopathologic patterns, histochemical staining, and IHC staining for smooth muscle actin (SMA), desmin, and laminin to characterize suspected non-visceral leiomyosarcoma in dogs at a single academic institution. In a retrospective search, we identified 24 dogs with a definitive or suspected histologic diagnosis of leiomyo…

Uterine sarcoma is significantly rarer than leiomyoma and has poor prognosis. Moreover, the diagnosis of leiomyosarcoma is difficult because its symptoms, including pelvic pain, uterine mass, and/or uterine bleeding, are very similar to those of leiomyoma. There are a few cases of leiomyosarcoma wherein leiomyoma was treated with uterine artery embolization (UAE); these reports revealed that the symptoms of hypermenorrhea or/and pelvic pain persisted even after UAE. Symptoms persisting even after UAE treatment for leiomyomas, especially multiple leiomyomas, should be investigated to rule out l…

OBJECTIVE: Leiomyosarcoma and ovarian cancer are often diagnosed late due to the absence of initial symptoms. Patients seek help when abdominal distension occurs; this is associated with pelvic tumor and carcinomatosis. Initial imaging often reveals pelvic tumors with diffuse abdominal nodules; however, this imaging could be misleading, such as in the cases of splenosis.
CASE REPORT: A female presented with vaginal bleeding at our outpatient department. Serum CA125 level was elevated. Abdominal and pelvic CT showed multiple uterine masses and left adnexal cysts with peritoneal nodules. Leiomy…

OBJECTIVES: The benefit of adjuvant chemotherapy in patients with localized uterine leiomyosarcoma (LMS) remains unclear due to a lack of randomized studies and data only from small retrospective series to rely on. We sought to identify factors associated with the administration of chemotherapy and to determine the trends in the usage of adjuvant chemotherapy in patients with nonmetastatic uterine LMS.
METHODS: Patients diagnosed with nonmetastatic uterine LMS between 2004 and 2014 were identified from the National Cancer Database (NCDB). Multiple regression was used to determine factors with…

PURPOSE: The study aimed to investigate magnetic resonance diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) in the differentiation of uterine leiomyosarcoma (ULMS) from degenerated leiomyoma (DLM).
METHODS: Sixteen patients with ULMSs and 26 patients with DLMs confirmed by surgery and pathology underwent conventional magnetic resonance imaging and DWI. The mean apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) values of the 2 groups' tumors were measured and compared using an independent-sample t test (b = 0.1000 s/mm [ADC1]; b = 0.800 s/mm [ADC2], respectively). A receiver operating characteristic curve was used to eval…

Brain metastases are the most commonly seen intracranial lesions in adults. What is more, meningiomas are the most common primary intracranial tumours after gliomas and their imaging characteristics are well known in both CT and MRI scans. However, there are lesions that can mimic meningiomas in imaging studies, including metastases of extracranial tumours, confronting us with a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge. We present the case of a patient with meningeal metastasis of a uterine leiomyosarcoma that was not known at the time of the surgical intervention.
