Mongolian spots associated with cleft lip.

Of the present series comprising 66 newborns with cleft lip, 13 (20%) had pigmented macules in the labial skin on the lateral side of the cleft. Histological examination using serial sections were performed on 47 cases and showed evidence of dermal melanocytosis in 40 cases (85%) consisting of 33 (70%) without clinically detectable macules and 7 (15%) with obvious pigmented macules. The fusiform cells in the dermis were positive for dopa reaction and anti-melanocyte antibody. The high incidence of dermal melanocytosis is comparable to that of common Mongolian spots in Asian babies.

The pathology of head and neck tumors: the lymphoepithelial lesion and Sjögren's syndrome, Part 16.

The clinical disorder Sjögren's syndrome and its putative histologic marker in salivary tissues, the lymphoepithelial lesion, have been and continue to be sources of confusion as well as the subjects of extensive immunologic and pathologic research. At the present time, Sjögren's syndrome is defined as a lymphocyte-mediated exocrinopathy but definition does little justice to the profound immunogenetic basis of the syndrome. This report presents a contemporary review of the lymphoepithelial lesion and the syndrome and presents a hypothesis of pathogenesis based on a graft vs host disease-like d

Acquired dyskeratotic leukoplakia.

A 36-year-old woman developed progressive dyskeratotic leukoplakia of the palate, lips, attached gingiva, and labial surfaces of the genitalia. On microscopic examination, clusters of dyskeratotic cells were found throughout the epithelium, except in the basal cell layer. The clinical and histologic differential diagnosis included candidiasis, oral hairy leukoplakia, lichen planus, condyloma acuminatum, Darier's disease, hereditary benign intraepithelial dyskeratosis, and white sponge nevus. Her clinical and histologic findings do not permit classification into any of these well-recognized ent

The prediction of lymph node metastases from oral squamous carcinoma.

In an attempt to predict which cases of oral and oropharyngeal squamous carcinoma are likely to metastasize to regional lymph nodes a series of 898 cases was grouped according to site, size, grade of histological differentiation, and presence or absence of histologically confirmed regional lymph node metastases. The results were analysed by a logistic multiple regression analysis. They showed that the sites may be divided into three clusters, Cluster 1 consists of tumors of lip, floor of mouth, cheek mucosa, hard palate, and gingiva. These are not significantly different as regards metastasis

The Transposition Flap for the Reconstruction of Lower Cutaneous Lip Defects.

<p>The lower cutaneous lip is a highly visible and functionally sensitive unit, and numerous factors must be considered when deciding on the optimal repair for defects in this area. The transposition flap represents an excellent option in the reconstruction of larger lower cutaneous lip defects. We describe the use of random pattern transposition flaps for the repair of lower lateral cutaneous lip defects.</p> <p><em>J Drugs Dermatol. 2017;16(4):385-387.</em></p>.

Wave technique for treatment of lower lip cancer.

PURPOSE: This article reports the authors' experience with treatment of lower lip cancer using the wave technique. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Twenty-one patients (16 males, 5 females) were treated using the wave technique between September 2009 and October 2010. Patients undergoing the procedure had tumors that were classified as either T1N0M0 or T2N0M0. Lateral defects less than 2 cm in size are generally treated with unilateral flaps, and median defects are closed with bilateral symmetric flaps. If the defect is paramedian and greater than 2 cm in width, two asymmetric flaps are used. RESULTS:

Relevance of perimarginal nodes for head and neck cancer.

OBJECTIVE: To estimate the prevalence of metastasis in the perimarginal nodes (PMNs) (also known as perifacial, preglandular and retroglandual nodes) in head and neck cancer. METHODS: We recruited 136 patients affected by cancers of the oral cavity, lip, oropharynx, skin and by cáncer of unknown primary (CUP), who were candidates for level IB dissection. PMNs were identified and sent separately for histological analysis. Correlation between metastasis to the PMNs and characteristics of the primary tumour were reported. RESULTS: The incidence of metastasis was 17% from oral cancer, 50% from l

Red Dot Basal Cell Carcinoma: Literature Review of a Unique Clinical Subtype of Basal Cell Carcinoma.

Red dot basal cell carcinoma is a distinctive clinical subtype of basal cell carcinoma. It has been reported in eight individuals with a male to female ratio of 1:1; and the patients' ages ranged from 50 to 74 years. All patients had prior history of actinic keratoses and basal cell carcinoma. In addition, some patients also had prior squamous cell carcinoma, malignant melanoma, and/or dysplastic nevus. The tumor was usually of recent onset, asymptomatic, and on sun-exposed skin. It was most commonly located on the nose (five patients); other sites were the upper lip, the mid back, or thigh-ea

Two unusual vascular lesions: epithelioid angiomatous nodule and spindle cell hemangiomatosis.

This report outlines the pathologic findings of epithelioid angiomatous nodule and spindle cell hemangiomatosis and briefly discusses the list of differential diagnoses. Although prevalent in the skin, both the above acquired vascular lesions are rarely described in the oral cavity. It should be realized that their microscopic features often raise concern for malignancy.

Functional Outcomes of Various Flap Techniques for the Reconstruction of Oncologic Lower Lip Defects.

Various local and free flap techniques have been developed for lower lip reconstruction, aiming to preserve oral competence, maintain adequate mouth opening, and ensure anatomical integrity for proper speech. This study compared the dynamic functional outcomes of selected local and free flaps in post-oncological lower lip reconstruction. Forty-four patients were categorized into 3 groups based on reconstruction techniques: Group 1: local flaps with or without dynamic properties that reduce oral aperture. Group 2: local flaps that preserve the oral aperture. Group 3: free flaps. Functional outc

Reconstruction of Surgical Defects of the Labial Commissure.

The main objective of oncologic dermatologic surgery is the complete excision of skin tumors. During reconstruction of the defect, we must attempt to preserve function and cosmetic appearance. At the labial commissure, fibers from the superior and inferior portions of the orbicularis oris muscle intersect and the vermillion inserts onto the modiolus, a complex, cone-shaped structure at the angle of the mouth. Surgical reconstruction of the labial commissure is challenging because of the need to preserve sphincter function and cosmetic symmetry. We present a number of cases of surgical defects

p53 protein expression in malignant, pre-malignant and non-malignant lesions of the lip.

AIM: To elucidate the role of the p53 tumour suppressor gene in the pathogenesis of lip cancer. METHODS: Expression of p53 was evaluated immunocytochemically in a retrospective study of formalin fixed, paraffin wax embedded tissue. Five cases each of four types of lip lesions were studied; these comprised squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), solar keratosis (SK), chronic hyperplastic candidosis (CHC), and lichen planus (LP). Five cases each of normal lip mucosa, SCC, and SK from sun exposed facial skin as well as LP, CHC, and SCC from buccal mucosa were also analysed. Immunolocalisation of p53 was

[Symptom: changes at the corners of the mouth (author's transl)].

The multiplicity of the pathological changes discussed have already been called many names: rhagades, perlèche, angular cheilosis, interlabial mycosis. It is often a poly-etiologic disease picture the causes of which must be recognized and then if necessary be clarified in greater detail by close interdisciplinary cooperation. Beside the common internal and dermatological diseases which may lead to changes at the angles of the mouth it is intended to show which dental and stomatological considerations are to be included in the differential diagnosis and therapy of this symptom complex.

Trends in cancer risks among Swedish agricultural workers.

The Swedish Cancer-Environment Register was used to study time-related trends in relative risks (RRs) of cancer between 1961 and 1979 in a cohort of 254,417 Swedish men who were employed in agriculture in 1960. The reference cohort consisted of 1,725,845 Swedish men who were gainfully employed in economic activities other than agriculture or forestry in 1960. Altogether 24,763 cancers were observed in the study cohort and 146,900 in the reference cohort, giving an estimated RR for the entire study period of 0.82 (95% confidence interval: 0.81-0.83). The RR for all sites combined increased from

Oral cancer knowledge, attitudes, and practices among senior dental students in Yemen: a multi-institution study.

BACKGROUND: The "Knowledge, attitude, and practice (KAP)" approach is crucial in health system. Appreciating the current KAP status will reveal the extent of the efficiency of applied health strategies, and subsequently help to determine the appropriate health policy to be employed for improving the health indicators of a given disease/condition, including Oral Cancer (OC). This large-scale cross-sectional study aimed to assess knowledge, attitude, and practice on OC among senior dental students in Yemen. METHODS: A pre-validated online questionnaire was used for data collection. It consisted

Lichenoid drug eruption on the lower lip caused by anti-PD-1 monoclonal antibody: a case report and literature review.

Anti-PD-1/PD-L1 monoclonal antibodies result in a unique spectrum of side effects, widely known as immune-related adverse events. Toripalimab is an anti-PD-1 monoclonal antibody used for the treatment of some cancers. Here we report the first case, to our knowledge, of oral lichenoid drug reaction triggered by toripalimab. A 78-year-old man who was diagnosed with systemic metastatic prostate cancer presented with ulcers on the lower lip after the fifth cycle of toripalimab. We diagnosed him with oral lichenoid drug reaction based on clinical manifestation, histopathological findings and the hi

Lip and Oral Cavity Squamous Cell Carcinoma.

Lip and oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) develop from progressive dysplasia of these mucosal structures. The cancers are often preceded by premalignant lesions, and any nonhealing ulcers of the lip or oral cavity should be biopsied. Some risk factors for these 2 subsites overlap and include tobacco use, alcohol use, and an immunocompromised state. Lip and oral cavity SCC are clinically staged based on physical examination and imaging. The 5-year overall survival for early-stage lip and oral cavity SCC is around 70% to 90% but decreases to about 50% for late-stage disease.

Surgery sequential with 5-Aminolevulinic acid photodynamic therapy for lip squamous cell carcinoma: Two cases reports.

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of thelip is conventionally treated by extended surgery or radiotherapy, which may cause deformities and dysfunction due to this special location. Topical 5-Aminolevulinic acid photodynamic therapy (ALA-PDT) for SCC in situ is effective and non-invasive, and may preserve normal morphological structure. However, the effectiveness is limited by tumor size and depth due to the permeability of photosensitizer and penetration depth of the therapeutic light source. We successfully treated two cases of lip invasive SCC (tumor size is 22.4 mm × 16.1 mm × 11.9 mm and 23 mm
