[Sialolithiasis in minor salivary glands. Case report].

Lithiasis of the minor salivary glands appearently occurs more frequently than hitherto presumed and should be considered as a possibility in the clinical differential diagnosis of tumors of the oral mucous membrane. The present paper refers two cases of sialolithiasis of the labial minor salivary glands. Further, a general outline of the condition is presented based on later years' increasing number of case reports.

An Effective Classification System for the Treatment of Encrusted Ureteral Stents.

BACKGROUND: We created a classification system for encrusted ureteral stents (ES) (Grading system for Additional lithiasis and uReteral Stent cAlcification -GARSA-, I-III grades), we demonstrate its utility for predicting the surgical outcome and the need of complex surgery. METHODS: Retrospective review of patients with ES; clinico-demographics, additional lithiasis (AL), stent calcification characteristics, surgeries performed, complications and stone free rate were collected. Chi-square was used to compare the categorical variables and Kruskal-Wallis test for the comparison > 2 numerical g…

A giant neobladder stone with insignificant symptoms: A case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Giant neobladder lithiasis after orthotopic bladder replacement is an infrequent but important long-term complication, which should be diagnosed and treated early. If left untreated, it may eventually lead to irreversible acute kidney injury and seriously affect the quality of life of patients. Here, we present a rare case of a patient who presented with a massive neobladder stone after radical cystectomy done with orthotopic neobladder construction, followed by a challenging stone extraction process. CASE PRESENTATION: A 70-year-old female patient presented with a massive neoblad…

Analysis of microRNA expression in patients with uric acid calculi.

Uric acid calculi (UAC) account for about 10% of cases worldwide, although this varies among countries. The etiology of nephrolithiasis is multifactorial, involving both genetic and environmental factors. Kidney stones occur three times more frequently in individuals with a family history of the condition compared to those without such a history. Genetic factors also contribute to cases of UAC. Genes such as ZNF365, SLC2A9 and SLC22A12 may be associated with the development of uric acid stones. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small RNA molecules, that play a significant role in regulating gene expressi…

Enhanced Recovery after Surgery Applied to Pediatric Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy for Simple Cholelithiasis: Feasibility and Teaching Insights.

BACKGROUND: Same-day discharge after a cholecystectomy is a common practice in the adult population and has been demonstrated as safe and vi … tion, and pain assessment. Day-case surgery was not applicable for acute cholecystitis, choledochal lithiasis, sickle cell disease, and hereditary spherocytosis cases. The protocol was employed for a group of attending surgeons and fellows, as well as a group of residents under the supervision of experienced surgeons. A retrospective analysis was conducted …

Stones in special situations.

There are several special situations in which urinary lithiasis presents management challenges to the urologist. An in-depth knowledge of the pathophysiology, unique anatomy, and treatment options is crucial in order to maintain good health in these patients. In this review, we summarize the current literature on the management of the following scenarios: bladder stones, stones in bowel disease, during pregnancy, in association with renal anomalies, with skeletal deformities, in urinary diversions, and in children.

[Obstructive anuria. Thirty cases].

The authors report 30 cases of obstructive anuria during the last fifteen years. The anuria was secondary to lithiasis in 60 per cent, in 26.6 per cent to pelvic cancer and in 13.4 per cent to retroperitoneal fibrosis. The diagnosis was facilitated by ultrasonography. Emergency treatment of obstructive anuria is based on urinary diversion by ureteral stent or by percutaneous nephrostomy under ultrasound control. Later the treatment depend of etiology.

[Vesicovaginal fistula in an 8-year-old girl].

We report a case of vesicovaginal fistula in an 8-year-old girl caused by a foreign body in the vagina. The foregoing condition was associated with vesical lithiasis. Correction of the fistula was performed during the same surgical procedure for stone removal, without waiting for 3-6 months to elapse as advocated by most of the authors. A review of the literature revealed only one such case has been reported earlier.

[Laparoscopic pyelolithotomy].

The application of laparoscopy as a surgical technique in Urology has enabled to expand the therapeutic options for various pathologies. The treatment of urinary lithiasis localized in the renal pelvis is one of them. We report a laparoscopic pyelolithotomy, describing the operation step-by-step, from patient positioning and trochar insertion to drainage tube insertion and closure. The objective of this article is to show the technique, presenting it as an alternative option.

Squamous cell carcinoma of the renal pelvis manifesting after percutaneous nephrolithotomy for long standing calculus.

Squamous cell carcinoma of the renal pelvis is a rare neoplasm and is usually associated with long standing stone disease. The disease is aggressive in nature and usually has a poor prognosis. We report a case of renal lithiasis who underwent successful percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) for renal pelvic calculus, and eight months later presented with a large invasive squamous cell carcinoma in the same location.

[Considerations on the etiology of pancreatitis].

Among numerous factors which induce or exacerbate pancreatitis infection of the biliary-tract--with or without lithiasis--is important. In suitable cases intervallic restoration of this tract is the best way to avoid recidivation. From a total of 624 patients in our department with cholepancreatitis in 225 cases this therapy was performed. After a recidivation of pancreatitis which required hospitalisation within at least 3 years was to be seen in 4.7%.

Surgical considerations in diseases of the pancreas.

Present data indicate that surgical treatment of pancreatitis is most successful in cases in which the disease is caused by extrahepatic disease of the biliary tract. Operation is also effective in cases of islet cell tumors, cysts, lithiasis, trauma and annular pancreas. Results seem to justify radical operation for early carcinoma of the ampulla of Vater and pancreas. The value of surgical treatment in other lesions of the pancreas is doubtful.

[Usefulness of the Difficult Cholecystectomy Score according to laparoscopic conversion].

INTRODUCTION: Biliary lithiasis (LB) is a very frequent problem in the daily consultation of a general surgeon, so currently, 10 to 15% of the adult population in the experienced countries has LB. METHODOLOGY: A descriptive, observational and cross-sectional study was carried out with patients sometimes having a laparoscopic cholecystectomy in a period between January 1, 2018 and December 31, 2018. The main objective of this study is to determine the differences in the risk scoring means of difficult cholecystectomy according to the conversion to open surgery in patients diagnosed with sympto…

[Recurrent episodes of brushite nephrolithiasis revealing primary hyperparathyroidism].

INTRODUCTION: Nephrolithiasis is a frequent disease observed in 1 to 20 % of the general population. This disease predominates in male patients (2:1) and is characterized by a high rate of recurrences (about 50 %). CASE REPORT: We report the case of a 45-year old male patient who experienced during about ten years recurrent bilateral renal colic episodes due to brushite lithiasis. These stones were treated with multiple extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy sessions. A pyeloureteral junction syndrome predisposing to bulky stones formation has been put in evidence and required a pyeloplasty. A…

Laparoscopic Anatomic Liver Resection Using the Landmark Vein Approach for Hepatolithiasis: A Technical Note.

Laparoscopic anatomic liver resection is the optimal treatment for intrahepatic bile duct stones confined to a liver segment or lobe. However, recurrent inflammation often obscures the first hepatic hilum, making traditional dissection approaches challenging. The "Landmark Vein approach," using a major hepatic vein as a real-time intraoperative guide for the parenchymal transection plane, offers a technical strategy to facilitate precise anatomic resection in this context. This technical note demonstrates the feasibility of this approach in a patient with complex hepatolithiasis undergoing a r…

Broncholithiasis: A Review.

The term "broncholithiasis" is defined as the presence of calcified or ossified materials within the tracheobronchial tree. The report of the condition dates back to 300 bc when Aristotle first described a symptom of "spitting of stones." The process of calcification usually starts within either the mediastinal, hilar, or peribronchial lymph nodes. The impetus is typically initiated by a granulomatous process such as TB or histoplasmosis; however, it can also been seen following exposure to other fungal or occupational elements. The exact mechanism of the calcified material (broncholith) enter…

Current management strategies for testicular microlithiasis.

The association of testicular microlithiasis with testicular tumor and the management of incidentally detected testicular microlithiasis have generated a great deal of interest. We review the current literature on testicular microlithiasis with regard to its association with testicular tumor. This association seems complex. The available data suggest that men with incidental findings of testicular microlithiasis but who have otherwise normal testes are at low risk of developing testicular cancer. The only follow-up recommended is regular testicular self-examination. Testicular microlithiasis i…
