Concanavalin A-induced lymphocyte proliferation was studied in 25 patients with alcoholic hepatitis or compensated alcoholic cirrhosis. Nine alcoholics without evidence of liver disease were also evaluated. A nonlinear correlation equation, which was natural logarithmic, was applied to individual dose-response proliferation curves and permitted comparisons between patient groups and controls. Lyt-2+ T cell clones were established from Listeria monocytogenes-infected mice. The clones secreted IFN-gamma after stimulation with spleen cells from L. monocytogenes-infected mice plus IL-2. Spleen cells from normal mice were not stimulatory. Furthermore, cloned T cells lysed L. monocytogenes-infected macrophages. Cytolysis was antigen-specific and H-2K-restricted. These findings suggest a role for specific cytotoxic T cells in the immune response to intracellular bacteria.

In vitro IgG production was measured using peripheral blood mononuclear cells from patients with autoimmune chronic active hepatitis (CAH) to determine whether the increased serum IgG levels were related to abnormalities of T or B lymphocyte function. Activated macrophages (M phi) appear responsible for at least part of the concomitant resistance in mice infected with Schistosoma mansoni. We studied the interaction of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and concanavalin A (Con A) with regard to IgM and IgG production in in vitro cultures of human peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBL). Antisera were produced in rabbits against idiotypic determinants of the myeloma protein from 3 patients with IgG-k myeloma. The cytotoxic T cell response in outbred mice infected with lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus (LCMV) is strain specific. The same is true for adoptive transfer of fatal LCM disease. We report a new Japanese family of sialidosis type I. The sialidase activity was deficient in the lymphocytes of 2 patients (6.8% (sister) and 12.5% (brother) of control mean). However, surprisingly, using the transformed lymphocytes by EB virus, this activity was activated to 51.7% (sister) and 49.5% (brother) of control mean, respectively. Although the mechanism for this activation was not known, we discussed the possible mechanisms for this phenomenon.

The effect of interleukin 3 (IL-3) on lymphokine-activated killer cell (LAK) generation in splenic lymphocytes was examined in patients with gastric cancer or idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP).
