Pediatric obesity rates have quadrupled in the United States, and deficits in higher-order cognition have been linked to obesity, though it remains poorly understood how deviations from normal body mass are related to the neural dynamics serving cognition in youth. Herein, we determine how age- and sex-adjusted measures of body mass index (zBMI) scale with neural activity in brain regions underlying fluid intelligence. Seventy-two youth aged 9-16 years underwent high-density magnetoencephalography while performing an abstract reasoning task. The resulting data were transformed into the time-fr…

Methylmercury pollution is a global problem, and Minamata disease (MD) is a stark reminder that exposure to methylmercury can cause irrevers … potentials (SNAPs) and somatosensory evoked magnetic fields (SEFs) to median nerve stimulation with magnetoencephalography. Single-trial epochs were classified into three categories (N20m, non-response, and P20m epochs) based on the cross-correlation between averaged sensor SEFs and individual epochs. We assessed SI responses (the appearance rate of P20m [P20m rate] and …

A spectroscopic paradigm has been developed that allows the magnetic field emissions generated by the electrical activity in the human body to be imaged in real time. The growing significance of imaging modalities in biology is evident by the almost exponential increase of their use in research, from the molecular to the ecological level. The method of analysis described here allows totally noninvasive imaging of muscular activity (heart, somatic musculature). Such imaging can be obtained without additional methodological steps such as the use of contrast media.

Noise sources in magnetoencephalography (MEG) include: (1) interference from outside the shielded room, (2) other people and devices inside the shielded room, (3) physiologic or nonphysiologic sources inside the patient, (4) activity from inside the head that is unrelated to the signal of interest, (5) intrinsic sensor and recording electronics noise, and (6) artifacts from other apparatus used during recording such as evoked response stimulators. There are other factors which corrupt MEG recording and interpretation and should also be considered "artifacts": (7) inadequate positioning of the …

BACKGROUND: Auditory verbal hallucinations (AVH), a prominent symptom of schizophrenia, are often highly distressing for patients. Better understanding of the pathogenesis of hallucinations could increase therapeutic options. Magnetoencephalography (MEG) provides direct measures of neuronal activity and has an excellent temporal resolution, offering a unique opportunity to study AVH pathophysiology.
METHODS: Twelve patients (10 paranoid schizophrenia, 2 psychosis not otherwise specified) indicated the presence of AVH by button-press while lying in a MEG scanner. As a control condition, patien…

Distinct psychological processes have been proposed to unfold in decision-making. The time course of neural mechanisms supporting these processes has not been fully identified. The present MEG study examined spatio-temporal activity related to components of decision-making proposed to support reward valuation, reward prediction, and outcome evaluation. Each trial presented information on reward value (10 or 50 cents) and reward probability (10%, 50%, or 90%). Brain activity related to those inputs and to outcome feedback was evaluated via electromagnetic responses in source space. Distributed

A 34-year-old male diagnosed of an intracranial arachnoid cyst arising in the left-sided temporal-parietal area, by computed tomography (CT), underwent evaluation by means of MEG. Biomagnetic waveform recordings were obtained from the target area and the Fourier analysis of these measurements was carried out. External magnetic stimulation in the order of pico Tesla was applied with proper field characteristics (intensity: 1-7.5 pT, frequency: 8-13 Hz), which were obtained prior to the application and the emitted MEG activity was recorded again. The cortical area adjacent to the borders of the

Clinical evaluation of language function and basic neuroscience research into the neurophysiology of language are tied together. Whole-head MEG systems readily facilitate detailed spatiotemporal characterization of language processes. A fair amount of information is available about the cortical sequence of word perception and comprehension in the auditory and visual domain, which can be applied for clinical use. Language production remains, at present, somewhat less well charted. In clinical practice, the most obvious needs are noninvasive evaluation of the language-dominant hemisphere and map

Letter-perception centers are not held in as high regard as motor- and language-related cortices during planning of neurosurgical procedures, and there have been no reports suggesting cortical reorganization of reading ability. The authors describe a patient with a left mesial temporal glioma in whom two letter-perception centers (the anterior portion of the left superior temporal gyrus and the left fusiform gyrus) were successfully localized before surgery by performing magnetoencephalography (MEG) during reading tasks. Control MEG examinations of 15 healthy volunteers were also performed to …

EEG and MEG were simultaneously recorded to study the visual gamma-band (30-70 Hz) responses. The electrical gamma-band response phase-locked to stimulus onset can be subdivided into a central component at 39 Hz and an occipital component at 36 Hz. A new high-frequency magnetic phase-locked response recorded over the occipital lobe is described. Its topography is complex and probably reflects the activity of multiple sources. Both electrical and magnetic high-frequency responses differ in topography from the low-frequency responses in the same latency range, suggesting that at least partially

Several EEG studies have reported an early component of the visual evoked potential. However, it is controversial whether this component is cortical or subcortical. Our study has aimed to clarify this problem using MEG and EEG in nine normal volunteers. A total of 4000 stimuli were presented to the monocular visual hemifield through a light-proof stimulating goggle and the visual evoked magnetic field and visual evoked potential was measured above the occipital lobe. The early component was observed in three of the nine subjects. The latency ranged from 40 to 45 ms in MEG and from 39 to 47 ms

Dexterous manual movements require accurate sensorimotor integration; however, understanding how the primary somatosensory cortex (SI) dynamically processes incoming afferent information during such tasks remains limited. Using magnetoencephalography, we investigated somatosensory evoked magnetic fields during two types of finger movement, varying in speed and force exertion. We focused on three SI components-M20, M30, and M38-occurring within 20 to 40 ms post-stimulation. Across all movement conditions, the M20 and M30 amplitudes were significantly reduced when compared with the stationary co…

There is mounting evidence for predictive coding theory from computational, neuroimaging, and psychological research. However, there remains a lack of research exploring how predictive brain function develops across childhood. To address this gap, we used pediatric magnetoencephalography to record the evoked magnetic fields of 18 younger children (M = 4.1 years) and 19 older children (M = 6.2 years) as they listened to a 12-min auditory oddball paradigm. For each child, we computed a mismatch field "MMF": an electrophysiological component that is widely interpreted as a neural signature of pre…

Parkinson's disease dementia (PDD) and dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) are related conditions that are associated with cholinergic system dysfunction. Dysfunction of the nucleus basalis of Meynert (NBM), a basal forebrain structure that provides the dominant source of cortical cholinergic innervation, has been implicated in the pathogenesis of both PDD and DLB. Here we leverage the temporal resolution of magnetoencephalography with the spatial resolution of MRI tractography to explore the intersection of functional and structural connectivity of the NBM in a unique cohort of PDD and DLB patien…
