Hypophosphatemic rickets (HR) is a genetic disorder with various types of inheritance. It results mainly from defects in factors that control mineral ion homeostasis such as 1,25(OH)2D (Calcitriol) and FGF23 (Fibroblast Growth Factor 23). The existing bibliography regarding orthodontic treatment in patients with hypophosphatemic rickets is extremely limited. The aim of this case report is to describe the orthodontic treatment of a 9-year old Caucasian female patient suffering from HR. The patient presented a healthy late mixed dentition and periodontium. She suffered from a mild Class III maxi

There have been many attempts to further improve and automate cephalometric analysis in order to increase accuracy, reduce errors due to subjectivity, and to provide more efficient use of clinicians' time. The aim of this research was to evaluate an automated system for landmarking of cephalograms based on the use of an active appearance model (AAM) that contains a statistical model of shape and grey-level appearance of an object of interest and represents both shape and texture variations of the region covered by the model. Multi-resolution implementation was used, in which the AAM iterate to

This study aimed to investigate the computed tomography (CT) values and morphology of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), specifically the condyle and glenoid fossa, in female patients with jaw deformities before and after orthognathic surgery. The maximum CT values were measured on the condylar and glenoid fossa surfaces. In addition, the height, length, and area of the glenoid fossa in the sagittal plane were evaluated for the bilateral TMJs, preoperatively and one year postoperatively. The ramus height, condylar square, ramus angle, and gonial angle were also measured. A total of 148 TMJs fr

OBJECTIVES: Genetic polymorphism of the α-actinin-3 (ACTN3) gene has an influence on the facial skeletal profile, with the activity of the α-actinins protein influencing the contractile properties of the masseteric muscles. This study examines the association between the ACTN3 rs1815739 polymorphism through a Stop Codon (changing 577RR to 577XX) resulting in variations in mandibular morphogenesis.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Two hundred and fifty subjects were categorised into three groups. The control group (Group 1) comprised 100 patients with skeletal Class I malocclusion. The experimental grou

In contemporary orthodontic practice, a large number of Class I and Class II patients, with and without crowding, are treated without premolar extractions. A wide range of philosophies and devices have been introduced with the aims of providing more space within the arches for the accommodation of the teeth, and influencing the relationships between the upper and lower arches. Some of these philosophies and devices are new--others have been recycled from previously-used models, which may or may not have been discarded for a number of reasons. Much descriptive and anecdotal material has been pr

Hemifacial microsomia is a rare dentofacial anomaly which is regarded as a separate entity to Goldenhar syndrome and primarily affects the structures of the first branchial arch. It has a heterogeneous aetiology and tends to occur sporadically, though positive family histories have been reported. This paper reports on individuals in two generations of a family that has overlapping features of hemifacial microsomia and Goldenhar syndrome segregating as an autosomal dominant condition.
