Colloidal Cd Mobilization during the Dissolution of Cd-Birnessite by Organic Matter: Role of Mineral Transformation and Organic Molecule Fractionation.

Cadmium (Cd) immobilized on manganese oxides (MnOx) in soils can undergo remobilization through reductive dissolution by natural organic matter (OM). However, the dominant Cd species released in this process remain incompletely understood, particularly under different pH conditions. Herein, we investigated dynamic Cd speciation during the anaerobic reduction of Cd-bearing birnessite by Suwannee River Fulvic Acid (SRFA), revealing a progressive dominance of colloidal Cd throughout the experiment. This trend was amplified at higher pH, as evidenced by its ultimate contributions of 36.6%, 57.8%,

Alpha-MnO2 catalyst with high formaldehyde oxidation and moisture resistance by joint cerium modification and phosphoric acid post-treatment.

Moisture is one prevalent interfering component during toxic formaldehyde treatment. Herein, Ce0.2Mn-P was synthesized through Ce incorporation and H3PO4 post-treatment, thereby enhancing the activity and water tolerance of α-MnO2. Removal efficiencies for ∼315 mg/m3 formaldehyde are ∼52 %, ∼54 %, ∼88 % and ∼85 % over MnO2, MnO2-P, Ce0.2Mn and Ce0.2Mn-P, respectively. Various analyses have shown that Ce modification is the primary factor enhancing catalytic oxidation. Besides, under two humidities (1.8 and 3.0 vol%), the inactivation rate of Ce0.2Mn-P is below 20 %, which was much lower than t

Effect of low molecular weight organic acids on the oxidation of Cr(III) by nano-MnO2.

The oxidation of Cr(III) to Cr(VI), a prevalent environmental process, poses significant challenges for pollution control due to the heightened toxicity and mobility of Cr(VI). However, the influence of environmental co-factors, such as low molecular weight organic acids (LMWOAs), on the oxidation process of Cr(III) remains to be verified. In this study, laboratory experiments were conducted to investigate how LMWOAs would affect the Cr(III) oxidation by MnO2. Two types of MnO2 were synthesized via hydrothermal methods and characterized. Three LMWOAs (citric acid (CA), oxalic acid (OA), and ma

Colorimetric "off-on" sensing of penicillamine via copper-mediated modulation of laccase-mimetic activity of trimanganese tetroxide nanoflowers.

D-Penicillamine (D-PA) is widely prescribed for Wilson's disease, rheumatoid arthritis, and cystinuria; however, its narrow therapeutic window and risk of severe renal, hematological, and autoimmune complications necessitate precise therapeutic monitoring. Traditional methods such as HPLC provide accurate quantification but are costly, time-consuming, and require sophisticated instrumentation, limiting their routine use. Nanozyme-based colorimetry has emerged as a rapid and cost-effective alternative, yet most reported systems suffer from limited selectivity and reliance on unstable oxidants.

Mn oxide-modified biochars with high adsorption capacity for Pb(II) in wastewater: Preparation and adsorption mechanisms.

The occurrence of excessive levels of bivalent plumbum (Pb(II)) in wastewater poses a notable threat to both human health and ecological safety. In this study, orthogonal experiments were conducted to prepare coprecipitation-modified biochar (C-BC) and impregnation pyrolysis-modified biochar (I-BC) via potassium permanganate (KMnO4) for removing Pb(II) from wastewater. Three types of modified biochars (BCs) (Mn-BCs) namely, C-BC400, I-BC400, and I-BC700, were selected as high-efficiency adsorbents on the basis of their high removal rates (87.2%, 88.0%, and 91.2%, respectively) for 400 mg/L Pb(

Influence of filter backwashing on iron, manganese, and ammonium removal in dual-media rapid sand filters used for drinking water production.

Iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), and ammonium (NH4+) removal from groundwater using rapid sand filtration is a widely employed method in drinking water production. Over time, Fe and Mn oxides accumulate in the filter, which necessitates frequent backwashing to avoid clogging. In this study, we investigated the impact of backwashing on the microbial community and filter chemistry in a dual-media filter comprising anthracite and sand layers. Specifically, we focused on the removal of Fe, Mn, and NH4+ over the runtime of the filter. With increasing runtime, depth profiles of dissolved and particulate F

Amino-functionalized manganese oxide for effective hexavalent chromium adsorption.

This study explores the use of functionalized manganese oxide (K-MnO2-NH2) for the removal of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) ions, a highly toxic heavy metal contaminant, from wastewater. The synthesis of K-MnO2-NH2 was achieved through a two-step process, followed by comprehensive characterization using various analytical techniques, which confirmed the material's formation as a pure phase. The K-MnO2-NH2 exhibited exceptional chromium removal efficiency, achieving up to 90% (4.53 mg/g) of Cr(VI) removal at pH 2. This high efficiency is attributed to the incorporation of amine groups via functi

Influence of filter age on Fe, Mn and NH4+ removal in dual media rapid sand filters used for drinking water production.

Rapid sand filtration is a common method for removal of iron (Fe), manganese (Mn) and ammonium (NH4+) from anoxic groundwaters used for drinking water production. In this study, we combine geochemical and microbiological data to assess how filter age influences Fe, Mn and NH4+ removal in dual media filters, consisting of anthracite overlying quartz sand, that have been in operation for between ∼2 months and ∼11 years. We show that the depth where dissolved Fe and Mn removal occurs is reflected in the filter medium coatings, with ferrihydrite forming in the anthracite in the top of the filters

Unraveling the intrinsic mechanism behind the selective oxidation of sulfonamide antibiotics in the Mn(II)/periodate process: The overlooked surface-mediated electron transfer process.

Mn(II) exhibits a superb ability in activating periodate (PI) for the efficient degradation of aqueous organic contaminants. Nevertheless, ambiguous conclusions regarding the involved reactive species contributing to the removal of organic contaminants remain unresolved. In this work, we found that the Mn(II)/PI process showed outstanding and selective reactivity for oxidizing sulfonamides with the removal ranging from 57.1% to 100% at pH 6.5. Many lines of evidence suggest that the in-situ formed colloidal MnO2 (cMnO2) served as a catalyst to mediate electron transfer from sulfonamides to PI

Bio-oil and biochar production from Ageratum conyzoides using triple-stage hydrothermal liquefaction and utilization of biochar in removal of multiple heavy metals from water.

Production of low-cost biomass and its utilization for producing cost effective and eco-friendly bioenergy as well as for removing heavy metals from water can be explored as an approach to meet the sustainable development goals. In light of the above-mentioned study, hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) of Billy goat weed (BGW; Ageratum conyzoides) was carried out to produce bio-oil. In addition, the residual biochar from the HTL process was activated to obtain Act-BC and was further modified to produce MnO2-loaded biochar (Act-BC@MnO2-25%). The HTL of BGW was done at three different temperatures,

Thrombus Inhibition and Neuroprotection for Ischemic Stroke Treatment through Platelet Regulation and ROS Scavenging.

Ischemic stroke is caused by cerebrovascular stenosis or occlusion. Excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS) are the focus-triggering factor of irreversible injury in ischemic regions, which result in harmful cascading effects to brain tissue, such as inflammation and microthrombus formation. In the present work, we designed nanodelivery systems (NDSs) based on MnO2 loaded with Ginkgolide B (GB) for restoring the intracerebral microenvironment in ischemic stroke, such as ROS scavenging, O2 elevation, thrombus inhibition and damage repair. GB can activate the endogenous antioxidant defense of ce

Electron paramagnetic resonance characterization and electron spin relaxation of manganate ion in glassy alkaline LiCl solution and doped into Cs2SO4.

Manganate ion, MnO42-, has important roles in catalysis and potential roles in water treatment. EPR spectra of MnO42- in a glassy alkaline solution of concentrated LiCl at X-band and Q-band at 80 K exhibit g1 = 1.9776 ± 0.001, g2 = 1.9677 ± 0.001, g3 = 1.9560 ± 0.001 and A1 = 182 ± 9, A2 = 275 ± 15, and A3 = 400 ± 15 MHz. In Cs2SO4 the spectra were simulated with 1.908 ± 0.001, g2 = 1.909 ± 0.001, g3 = 1.937 ± 0.001 and A1 = 90 ± 20, A2 = 100 ± 20, and A3 = 400 ± 15 MHz. Ultrahigh Peroxymonosulfate Utilization Efficiency over CuO Nanosheets via Heterogeneous Cu(III) Formation and Preferential Electron Transfer during Degradation of Phenols.

In persulfate activation by copper-based catalysts, high-valent copper (Cu(III)) is an overlooked reactive intermediate that contributes to efficient persulfate utilization and organic pollutant removal. However, the mechanisms underlying heterogeneous activation and enhanced persulfate utilization are not fully understood. Here, copper oxide (CuO) nanosheets (synthesized with a facile precipitation method) exhibited high catalytic activity for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation with 100% 4-chlorophenol (4-CP) degradation within 3 min. Evidence for the critical role of surface-associated Cu(II

Removal of Cadmium(II) by hydrated manganese dioxide: behaviour and mechanism at different pH.

Homogeneous precipitation was proposed to prepare hydrated manganese dioxide (HMO) with KMnO4 as oxidant, NaCl as reductant and HNO3 as reaction auxiliary. HMO was applied to remove Cd(II) and the effect of contact time, initial concentration, adsorbent dose and pH value on adsorption efficiency were investigated. The removal mechanisms at various pH values were analysed in detail. Adsorption thermodynamics parameters were calculated as ΔG < 0, ΔH > 0 and ΔS > 0, which meant that the adsorption process was endothermic. The result of adsorption kinetics indicated the adsorption process conforme
