Dental pulp necrosis as a rare complication of reduction malarplasty.

Reduction malarplasty through the intraoral or the combined approach using intraoral and preauricular incisions is widely performed as an aesthetic surgical procedure in northeast Asia. The authors recently examined a patient who underwent this type of surgery and presented with discoloration of both upper canine teeth that was diagnosed as pulp necrosis. This case suggests the possibility that pulp necrosis occurs as a result of vibration and heat energy transmitted from a rotating bur to the anterior superior alveolar nerve branch located in the more lateral and superficial portion than in t

Recovery of the infraorbital nerve after zygomatic complex fractures: a preliminary study of different treatment methods.

The infraorbital nerve (ION) is often involved in trauma to the zygomatic complex (ZC), resulting in sensory disturbance of the area innervated by it. The purpose of the study was to compare the incidence of persistent sensory disturbance after recovery from isolated simple fractures of the ZC, with four treatment methods: 1) closed reduction via subcutaneous approach without fixation; 2) open reduction via subcutaneous approach without fixation; 3) open reduction via oroantral approach and support of the complex by an intraantral Foley catheter; and 4) open reduction via Gillies approach with

A bilateral sinus cyst treated via a bilateral frontonasal bone flap in a standing horse.

Bilateral paranasal sinus diseases are rarely reported in horses. Treatment using a bilateral frontonasal bone flap on a standing, regular-sized adult horse has not been described previously. A 13-year-old Thoroughbred gelding was evaluated for bilateral mucopurulent nasal discharge. Radiographic, endoscopic and computed tomographic examinations revealed bilateral sinus pathological changes consistent with an ethmoid haematoma involving the maxillary and frontal sinuses. A bilateral frontonasal bone flap was created under standing sedation and local anaesthesia. A tracheotomy was performed ini

An easy way to apply orthodontic extraction for impacted lower third molar compressing to the inferior alveolar nerve.

PURPOSE: To study the results of an easy orthodontic extraction method for impacted lower third molar removal which had roots compressing to the inferior alveolar nerve (IAN). PATIENTS AND METHODS: Forty patients were divided into two groups according to their desire. Orthodontic traction group (n=20) had brackets or mini bone screws on the antagonist maxillary molars as anchorage for orthodontic traction from 3 to 10 weeks until the roots' tip was away from the IAN, the tooth was then removed. Traditional extraction group (n=20) had the tooth removed immediately by the same surgeon. Post-ope

An unusual case of schwannomatosis with bilateral maxillary sinus schwannomas and a novel SMARCB1 gene mutation.

Schwannomas are benign tumors that arise from Schwann cells in the peripheral nervous system. Patients with multiple schwannomas without signs and symptoms of neurofibromatosis Type 1 or 2 have the rare disease schwannomatosis. Tumors in these patients occur along peripheral nerves throughout the body. Mutations of the SMARCB1 gene have been described as one of the predisposing genetic factors in the development of this disease. This report describes a patient who was observed for 6 years after having undergone removal of 7 schwannomas, including bilateral maxillary sinus schwannomas, a tumor

Restoration of facial symmetry in a patient with bell palsy using a modified maxillary complete denture: a case report.

Permanent facial paralysis can be devastating for a patient. Modern society's emphasis on appearance and physical beauty contributes to this problem and often leads to isolation of patients embarrassed by their appearance. Lagophthalmos with ocular exposure, loss of oral competence with resultant drooling, alar collapse with nasal airway obstruction, and difficulties with mastication and speech production are all potential consequences of facial paralysis. Affected patients are confronted with both a cosmetic defect and the functional deficits associated with loss of facial nerve function. In

[Ontogeny of the jaw].

Four pairs of branchial arch appear apparently in the neck region of human embryo about 32 days after fertilization. Maxillary prominence of the first branchial arch gives rise to the maxilla and zygomatic bone etc., and mandibular prominence forms the mandible and so on. Muscles for mastication are also derived from 1st branchial arch, into which fifth cranial nerves grow from the brain. Thus, human embryo improves the 1st branchial arches into the upper and lower jaws, and forms digestive organs needed for intake, mastication, and swallowing of foods. Finally they develop the brain for integ

The use of a bone lid to close the anterior wall defect after surgery in the maxillary sinus.

Surgery was performed in the maxillary sinus with restoration of the surgical defect in the anterior wall with a resutured bone-lid, in 12 patients with an average age of 45 years, the technique is described and evaluated clinically and radiographically (computed tomography). During the followup time of 1-4 years, the condition of the maxillary sinus was normalized. It is our opinion that the bone-lid technique for maxillary sinus surgery is useful, especially when good overview and access is necessary.

Trigeminal Neuralgia Due to Neurovascular Conflict: A Case Report.

A 47-year-old female patient visited the outpatient department with the complaint of "sharp shooting, radiating type of pain" on the maxillary left posterior gingiva for the last three months. The patient was advised a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan which gave the radiological diagnosis of trigeminal neuralgia (TN). It also stated that the root entry zone of cranial nerve-V (CN-V) was in contact with the superior cerebellar artery and anterior inferior cerebellar artery. The patient was kept on a carbamazepine and gabapentin combination and a supportive therapy of multivitamins which br

Encapsulated Sinonasal Schwannoma Mimicking an Antrochoanal Polyp.

Extracranial schwannomas are uncommon neoplasms of the sinonasal tract arising from peripheral nerve shealth. Mostly acapsulated on histology, but few cases of encapsulated schwannomas have been reported. Its symptoms are nonspecific and initial clinical diagnosis is frequently missed. We report a 13-year-old boy with a huge, encapsulated sinonasal schwannoma initially thought to be an antrochoanal polyp. Computed tomography scan demonstrated a huge irregularly shaped mildly enhancing isodense mass in the right nasal cavity with lateral extension to the ipsilateral maxillary sinus, superior ex

Sinonasal spindle cell carcinoma presenting with bilateral visual loss: A case report and review of the literature.

Spindle cell carcinoma (SpCC) is a rare variant of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). SpCC of sinonasal origin is relatively rare and more aggressive than normal SCC. It most commonly involves the maxillary sinus, and rarely the sphenoid sinus. The present study reports a case of sphenoid sinus SpCC presenting with bilateral visual loss. Following endoscopic sinus decompression surgery, the patient was referred to the Oncology Department for a staging workup, and subsequently received concurrent chemoradiotherapy; however, the vision of the patient was not recovered, despite treatment. To the best

Healing pattern of intentional pterygoid plate fracture after posterior movement of maxilla through Le Fort I osteotomy.

BACKGROUND: To evaluate maxillary stability following Le Fort I osteotomy using postero-superior movement after pterygoid plate fracture. Additionally the authors sought to analyze the postoperative changes at the intentional pterygoid plate fracture site. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-six patients with class III deformities treated with total maxillary setback at the Lefort I level were enrolled in a retrospective cohort study. Relative changes in measurement points were identified on cone-beam computed tomographic scans (CBCT) as well as lateral cephalograms. The outcome variables were dete

Prelacrimal Transmaxillary-Orbital Approach for Resection of Lateral Extraconal Orbital Cavernous Hemangioma.

Endoscopic orbital surgery is likely a reasonable option for patients with orbital cavernous hemangiomas (OCH) medial to the optic nerve (ON). The endoscopic resection of OCH lateral to the ON is extremely challenging. Zhou et al. first described the endoscopic prelacrimal recess approach (PLRA) for the management of the maxillary sinus and skull base. However, the application of PLRA for endoscopic resection of OCH has not been reported. Here, we report a novel modification of the PLRA termed the prelacrimal transmaxillary-orbital approach (PLTMOA) for endoscopic resection of extraconal OCH l

A study of infraorbital nerve swelling associated with immunoglobulin G4 Mikulicz's disease.

OBJECTIVES: Recent studies revealed that Mikulicz's disease (MD) should be considered as an immunoglobulin (Ig) G4-related disease with aspects of systemic disorders involving the orbit. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between Immunoglobulin G4 (IgG4)-related MD and infraorbital nerve thickness. METHODS: We measured infraorbital nerve thickness in 68 patients diagnosed as IgG4-related MD at our hospital and performed computed tomography scans of the head and neck region before treatment and compared these scans with those of the control group. RESULTS: The mean infraorbital nerv

[The therapy of zygomatic fractures. Clinical and experimental studies].

The analysis of 120 patients with zygoma fractures showed disturbances of sensibility in the field of the N. infraorbitalis in 84% and pathological statements of eyes in 20%. The re-examinations of 76 of these patients 0.5-4.5 years postoperative showed that more than the half of these patients, who were treated by only the bone-retractor have a redislocation of the zygoma, and 49% of all cases have permanent damages of the N. infraorbitalis. The reason for the damage of the nerve is not only the compression of the nerve for a short time by the dislocated zygoma but also regular present additi

Bilateral facial nerve paralysis following arterial embolization for epistaxis.

Risk of carotid artery embolization is usually attributed to inadvertent occlusion of the internal carotid system. This report highlights some recently noted complications associated with occlusion of external carotid branches. A case of bilateral facial paralysis following embolization of the internal maxillary arteries for severe epistaxis is presented. The clinician must recognize that facial paralysis is a real and sometimes inevitable sequela to the ever-increasing practice of arterial embolization in the head and neck.

Functional role of lingual nerve in breastfeeding.

Functional role of lingual nerve in breastfeeding was investigated in rat pups during the suckling period. DiI, a postmortem neuronal tracer, was used to confirm the immature lingual nerve (LN) responsible for tongue sensation and resulted in successful fiber labeling anterogradely to the tongue, which showed different distribution patterns from fiber labeling derived from the hypoglossal nerve. Unilaterally LN-injured pups did not show suckling disturbance with absence of any shortening (P11 pups: 559+/-16s; 105% of the control value) in nipple attachment time and the survival rate remained h

Morphological Characteristics of the Sphenoid Sinus and Endoscopic Localization of the Cavernous Sinus.

The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between the morphological characteristics of the sphenoid sinus and endoscopic localization of the cavernous sinus (CS) using an extended endoscopic endonasal transsphenoidal approach. Thirty sides of CS in 15 adult cadaver heads were dissected to simulate the extended endoscopic endonasal transsphenoidal approach, and the morphology of the sphenoid sinus and anatomic structures of CS were observed. The opticocarotid recess (OCR), ophthalmomaxillary recess (V1V2R), and maxillomandibular recess (V2V3R) in the lateral wall of the sphenoid
