We present a rare case of subdural empyema with cerebral arteritis and brain ischemia in the middle cerebral artery distribution secondary to odontogenic maxillary sinusitis. A 32-year-old man was admitted to our hospital because of high fever and generalized convulsions. Computed tomography(CT)and magnetic resonance imaging(MRI)showed subdural empyema at the left convexity, with a small amount of air. An interruption of the right maxillary sinus floor corresponding to the alveolar process was evident on coronal CT. He was diagnosed as having subdural empyema caused by odontogenic maxillary si…

Penetration of the maxillary sinus floor membrane during sinus lift occasionally induces maxillary sinusitis. However, maxillary sinusitis may still develop even when its floor membrane has been kept intact during such procedures. The decisive factor for the occurrence of maxillary sinusitis is not the integrity of the membrane; more important is the patency of the maxillary sinus natural ostium. The occlusion of the natural ostium presumably results from the expansive edema of the sinus membrane induced by surgical manipulations to the maxillary sinus floor. We propose a minimally invasive en…

Recent studies have reported that drowning victims frequently have fluid accumulation in the paranasal sinuses, most notably the maxillary and sphenoid sinuses. However, in our previous study, many non-drowning victims also had fluid accumulation in the sinuses. Therefore, we evaluated the qualitative difference in fluid accumulation between drowning and non-drowning cases in the present study. Thirty-eight drowning and 73 non-drowning cases were investigated retrospectively. The fluid volume and density of each case were calculated using a DICOM workstation. The drowning cases were compared w

Development of the nasal capsule cartilages was studied in seven Geoffroy's tamarins (Saguinus geoffroyi), including one fetus, five neonates and one infant. Four additional postnatal specimens of the genus were studied (one 5-month-old and three adults) to determine the magnitude of postnatal expansion of the paranasal sinuses. Alcian blue histochemistry and osteopontin immunohistochemistry were employed in selected subadult specimens to characterize cartilage matrix. The fetal S. geoffroyi possesses a continuous nasal capsule, including a zona anularis; the primordial maxillary sinuses are s

Background/Objectives: Half of diagnosed unilateral maxillary sinusitis may have odontogenic origin, and root canal treatment (RCT) can be beneficial as a single-mode treatment for full resolution of maxillary sinusitis of endodontic origin (MSEO) symptoms. The aim of the study was to investigate the influence of passive ultrasonic irrigation (PUI) on the healing of MSEO after non-surgical endodontic treatment. Methods: A single-center, retrospective study was conducted on CBCT data and medical records of 240 patients, who underwent non-surgical endodontic treatment, performed by the same oper…

The aim of this case report is to report clinical, radiologic, and histologic healing outcomes following functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) to manage maxillary sinusitis after lateral sinus augmentation. Three patients who underwent lateral sinus augmentation developed maxillary sinusitis after 3 to 4 weeks. Pharmacologic interventions were performed, but the patients' symptoms did not resolve. The patients were referred to an otorhinolaryngologist and underwent FESS without the removal of bone substitute material or implants. The patients' symptoms disappeared completely after FESS. T…

The aim of this study was to evaluate the health or pathology of bilateral maxillary sinuses using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) with a low-dose protocol, and to analyze potential influencing factors. The study included only CBCT scans with complete visualization of bilateral maxillary sinuses. The scans were taken using a medium to large field of view and a low-dose protocol, as indicated by the manufacturer. CBCT images were analyzed with regard to the morphology of the sinus membrane and surrounding bone twice by one observer. Influencing factors such as age, sex, or status of the re

Using biomicroscopy of the bulbar conjunctiva, 65 patients, aged 6 to 15 years, with catarrhal and purulent forms of acute and chronic maxillary sinusitis were examined. At the repair stage the patients were exposed to laser therapy. The results give evidence that laser therapy produced a positive effect on microcirculation and reduced the potential of relapses. Low-energy helium-neon laser affected mostly vessel permeability (decrease of perivascular edema) and blood rheology (red blood cell aggregation). In terms of circulation changes, laser therapy was more beneficial in the case of acute …

A one-step surgical procedure is presented, including maxillary sinus floor elevation in association with functional endoscopic sinus surgery to remove rhino-sinusal malformations or pathoses that might contraindicate sinus floor elevation. Over a 2-year period, 10 patients requiring a sinus floor augmentation procedure to restore the missing dentition with endosseous implants, but presenting with local and reversible rhinologic contraindications to the augmentation procedure were consecutively treated with a surgical approach that included simultaneously functional endoscopic sinus surgery an
