INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Meckel's diverticulum (MD) is one of the most common gastrointestinal anomalies and affects 2-3 % of the population. Strangulated umbilical hernia with a perforated Meckel diverticulum is an extremely rare event.
CASE PRESENTATION: We reported here a case of one year old boy of a strangulated umbilical hernia with perforated MD that operated at the Mogadishu hospital. A wedge resection of the MD and anastomosis was performed.
CLINICAL DISCUSSION: MD is one of the most common gastrointestinal anomalies and affects 2-3 % of the population. About 60 % of cases come …

BACKGROUND: Abdominal pain is a common presenting symptom with a broad array of potential etiologies. Meckel diverticulum (MD), the most common congenital gastrointestinal malformation, classically presents with painless gastrointestinal bleeding. However, it can also lead to diverticulitis, intussusception, or obstruction, manifesting as abdominal pain.
CASE REPORT: A 2-year-old boy presented to the emergency department with intermittent abdominal pain, vomiting, and loose stools. Abdominal ultrasound findings were consistent with ileitis and ileocolic intussusception, but no such intussusce…

PURPOSE: It is unclear whether simple diverticulectomy, rather than segmental bowel resection (SBR), is adequate treatment for gastrointestinal bleeding (GIB) secondary to Meckel diverticulum (MD). There is concern that ulcers in the adjacent bowel may continue to bleed if only the diverticulum is removed. This study seeks to determine if diverticulectomy is satisfactory treatment for bleeding MD.
METHODS: A multi-institution, retrospective review was performed for patients with a diagnosis of MD and GIB who underwent simple diverticulectomy or small bowel resection. Exclusion criteria were c…

We report an unusual case of a patient with strangulated Meckel diverticulum in a femoral hernia. A 65-year-old woman presented with a nonradiating, constant pain in the right groin with associated nausea and anorexia. Physical examination revealed a tender, irreducible lump in the right groin area. At operation, a hernia sac containing a strangulated Meckel diverticulum was clearly recognized going through the femoral ring. A diverticulectomy was performed, and the femoral ring was closed with a polypropylene plug. No recurrence has been observed during the 3 year follow-up. Strangulated Meck…

OBJECTIVE: To describe color Doppler sonographic findings in 2 cases of inflamed and perforated Meckel diverticulum.
METHODS: Two patients with inflamed and perforated Meckel diverticulum underwent color Doppler sonographic studies.
RESULTS: Gray scale sonographic examination identified a fixed cystlike structure with a gut signature surrounded by a hyperechoic layer. Color Doppler sonography revealed hyperemia in the diverticular wall and hyperechoic layer, which was more intense in 1 patient.
CONCLUSIONS: Identification of a fixed cystlike structure with a gut signature and wall hyperemia…

We present two new cases of cancer in a Meckel's diverticulum, representing 3.3% of the complicated Meckel's diverticula encountered in our department. The first case was a carcinoid tumor encountered in a pathology study of an inflamed Meckel's diverticulum, and the second case was a leiomyosarcoma on a Meckel's diverticulum that presented as diverticular perforation. We emphasize the advanced age of the two patients and review the cases reported in Spain and in the Western literature.

Meckel diverticulum was diagnosed preoperatively as the cause of recurrent rectal bleeding in a 2-year-old child by means of a sodium pertechnetate Tc 99m scan. Although false-negative scans have been reported to occur in approximately 50% of all cases of Meckel diverticulum, the procedure should be considered in any case of unexplained, painless rectal bleeding, especially in pediatric patients.

We report the case of a 72-year-old man who underwent surgery for a jejunal intussusception caused by an infarcted mass on the antimesenteric surface of the small bowel approximately 90 cm from the duodenojejunal flexure. The specimen was reported as an infarcted diverticulum containing heterotopic pancreatic mucosa in keeping with infarcted Meckel's diverticulum. We initially wished to establish when the term "Meckel's diverticulum" should be used. The anatomical site in the present case argues against this being a Meckel's diverticulum, a remnant from the mid-gut loop. Non-Meckelian divertic

A congenital diverticulum of the small intestine is a condition with only a low morbidity and is generally a Meckel's diverticulum. There is, however, another congenital malformation, which can closely resemble a Meckel's diverticulum, but has another etiology, the tubular duplication of the small intestine. The authors point out the embryologic, anatomic and histological findings between these different but very similar malformations. It seems that the diagnosis of duplication is not often considered when finding a diverticulum of the small intestine and such a malformation is too easily call

Typical Meckel diverticulum on 99m TcO 4- scintigraphy usually appears early in the dynamic imaging in the right lower quadrant of the abdomen, without change of location during the study. We report a case of pathology-proven Meckel diverticulum a 7-year-old boy, which appeared only on the later part of the 99m TcO 4- study in the midline upper pelvis which gradually changed location during the study.

BACKGROUND: Meckel Diverticulum [MD), a common congenital anomaly of the gastrointestinal tract, poses a dilemma when incidentally encountered during surgery. Despite historical descriptions and known complications of symptomatic MD, the decision to resect an incidental MD (IMD) lacks clear guidelines. This study aims to assess whether resecting IMDs is justified by synthesizing evidence from studies published between 2000 and 2023. Factors influencing this decision, such as demographic risks, surgical advancements and complications, are systematically examined.
METHODS AND MATERIAL: Followin…

One of the most common malformations of the gastrointestinal tract is Meckel diverticulum (MD). MD complications can range from minor to major, such as intestinal obstruction, intussusception, hemorrhage, ulceration, vesicodiverticular fistulae, and tumors. Bleeding from ectopic gastric mucosa is more common in children than in adults. In the current case, MD in a 25-y-old man was diagnosed by 99mTc-pertechnetate scanning. 99mTc-pertechnetate scanning helps to diagnose MD noninvasively and has a potential role in the evaluation of MD even in adults.

PURPOSE: Meckel diverticula containing gastric heterotopia predispose to local hyperacidity, mucosal ulceration, and gastrointestinal bleeding in children. Eradication of acid-producing oxyntic cells is performed by either of two surgical methods: segmental enterectomy including the diverticulum or diverticulectomy only.
METHODS: Retrospective review of all children having surgical resection of a Meckel diverticulum at a tertiary-referral children's hospital from 2002 to 2016 was performed. Demographic data, surgical method, pathological specimens, and outcomes were evaluated.
RESULTS: 102 c…
