Meniscus suture provides better clinical and biomechanical results at 1-year follow-up than meniscectomy.

BACKGROUND: Surgery of meniscus tear results in limitation of function. The aim of study was functional assessment of knee 1 year after surgery with two techniques in cases of the medial meniscus tear followed by the same supervised rehabilitation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 30 patients with good KOSS scores constituted two equal groups after partial meniscectomy or meniscus suture. Measurements of knee extensors and flexors muscles peak torques were performed with angular velocities 60, 180, 240 and 300 s(-1) using Biodex IV system. One-leg-hop and one-leg-rising tests ascertained the…

Retropatellar chondromalacia associated with medial osteoarthritis after meniscus injury. One year of observations in sheep.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: In an ovine meniscal repair model, the patellofemoral (PF) osteoarthritis due to a non-sutured tear or failed repair was investigated. METHODS: A radial meniscus tear was either sutured with polydioxanone (PDS), with a slow degrading polylactide long-term suture(LTS) or left without treatment. Knee joint cartilage in the PF and medial compartment was evaluated compared to normal knees (healthy controls). RESULTS: Retropatellar osteoarthritis in the non-sutured and sutured animals was intense in contrast to the control knees after 6 months in all groups (p < 0.001), and after…

Experimental Study of Capillary-Rise Behavior and Meniscus Evolution in Glass Capillaries Under an Electric Field.

To elucidate the scale-dependent response and interfacial evolution of liquid capillary rise in glass capillaries under an electric field, c … t-current electric field was examined, and the interfacial evolution mechanism was explored through meniscus visualization. The results show that, without an electric field, the equilibrium capillary height is governed mainly by capillary inner diameter, followed by temperature, whereas concentration has a relatively weak effect. The developed quadratic re …

Analysis of deep learning techniques in computer-aided diagnosis for meniscus injuries: a systematic literature review.

Meniscus informatics is a growing subject of study in the healthcare industry. One of the major hindrances to the healthcare system's transformation is obtaining knowledge and meaningful information from complicated, high-dimensional and diverse sources. Modern biomedical research, for instance, has seen an increase in the use of complex, dissimilar, poorly documented, and generally unstructured electronic health records, imaging, sensor data and text, even after many current techniques have been used to extract more robust and useful elements from the data for analysis. New efficient standard…

Biomechanical impact of severe genu valgum (18°) on the lateral meniscus: a finite element stress analysis.

Genu valgum is a deformity that alters load transmission in the knee. While the effects of mild deviations are known, the specific quantitative impact of severe deformities (>15°) on the lateral meniscus remains understudied. This research aims to quantify the stress distribution in a severe 18° valgus deformity compared to a healthy morphology. A comparative Finite Element Analysis (FEA) was conducted. 3D models were reconstructed from segmented DICOM images using MIMICS and 3MATIC software. A static vertical load of 850 N, simulating a bipedal stance, was applied to both a healthy model and …

Region specific microstructural complexity of the ovine meniscus root provides an organizational basis for injury susceptibility.

Comprehensive information on the meniscus root microstructure is essential to exactly understand its physiological role and susceptibility to injury. We selected the ovine medial meniscus anterior root (MAR) as model to elucidate the intricate spatial arrangement of its enthesis, root ligament and transition into the medial meniscus anterior horn (MMAH), hypothesizing that its microstructure is comparable to humans. We applied different histological, type-I, -II, and -X collagen immunohistochemical, polarization and confocal analyses to investigate its structural complexity. The results reveal…

Survivorship and outcomes of intra- and perimeniscal corticosteroids injections with structured physiotherapy for degenerative medial meniscus tears.

BACKGROUND: Degenerative medial meniscus tears are a common pathology in the general population. Recent randomized trials demonstrated non-superiority of arthroscopic partial meniscectomy over conservative management. However, there is a paucity of information regarding the outcomes of combined conservative treatments. HYPOTHESIS: It was hypothesized that combined intra- and perimeniscal corticosteroid injections with structured physiotherapy, for degenerative medial meniscus tears, would result in high surgery-free and second injection-free survivorship. METHODS: A retrospective review of 6…
