Smoking cessation for improving mental health.

BACKGROUND: There is a common perception that smoking generally helps people to manage stress, and may be a form of 'self-medication' in people with mental health conditions. However, there are biologically plausible reasons why smoking may worsen mental health through neuroadaptations arising from chronic smoking, leading to frequent nicotine withdrawal symptoms (e.g. anxiety, depression, irritability), in which case smoking cessation may help to improve rather than worsen mental health. OBJECTIVES: To examine the association between tobacco smoking cessation and change in mental health. SE

Virtual Reality Therapy in Mental Health.

Initially designed for the treatment of phobias, the use of virtual reality in phobic disorders has expanded to other mental health disorders such as posttraumatic stress disorder, substance-related disorders, eating disorders, psychosis, and autism spectrum disorder. The goal of this review is to provide an accessible understanding of why this approach is important for future practice, given its potential to provide clinically relevant information associated with the assessment and treatment of people suffering from mental illness. Most of the evidence is available for the use of virtual real

Altered Mental Status After Esophagogastroduodenoscopy.

A 79-year-old man with medical history of atrial fibrillation and esophageal cancer status post trans-hiatal esophageal resection and chemotherapy presented with altered mental status after outpatient esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD). One month before presentation, the patient was seen at another hospital with severe anemia and melena requiring transfusion of multiple units of RBCs. No endoscopy was performed during that admission, but his anticoagulation was held. After follow-up with his oncologist, he was referred for outpatient endoscopy. His esophagogastroduodenoscopy demonstrated an inta

Serious Mental Illness and Hospice Care.

There are a small number of articles in the literature discussing palliative and end-of-life care in the SMI population. Most tackle the questions relating to competency to refuse care in end-stage anorexia or terminal medical conditions. This is a case review of a 55 year old patient with a complex psychiatric and medical history, who despite extensive treatment and long hospitalizations has failed to regain any ability to care for her basic needs. She has exhausted all available treatment options and her prognosis is extremely poor. The mental health community is resistant to discussing and/

Classifying major mental disorders genetically.

Typically, mental disorders are defined and classified based on clinical symptoms and syndromes. Although clinically useful, current diagnostic systems for psychiatry cause concerns due to the lack of biological mechanisms. Deciphering the relationships among psychiatric traits according to their genetic basis may facilitate understanding the biological mechanisms of psychiatric disorders. Ten mental disorders were classified by genomic structural equation modeling (SEM), which leverages summary results of genome-wide association studies. Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), anorex

[Perinatal mental health in chilean mothers].

INTRODUCTION: Pregnancy and postpartum are periods of increased vulnerability for the development of maternal mental health disorders, that have a negative impact on maternal-infant interaction and health. Most studies have focused on depression, with anxiety being less studied, despite its high prevalence. Ob jectives: to evaluate the prevalence of positive screening for anxiety and depressive symptoms in a sample of women seen in public primary health centers in Chile, and the association of these symp toms with specific risk factors. Man with headache and altered mental status.

PresentationAn 83-year-old man presented for headache and altered mental status. Four days prior, he underwent endoscopic sinus surgery for nasal polyps. Over the two previous days, he gradually developed a headache and was brought to the emergency department when his wife noted mild confusion and generalised weakness. His examination was notable for a heart rate of 101 beats per minute, clear nasal discharge, meningismus and confusion to the date with generalised weakness. A lumbar puncture revealed cloudy cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) with a white blood cell count of 3519x10ˆ9/L (95% neutrophils

Branching Patterns of Mental Nerve in Newborns.

In classical textbooks of Anatomy, the mental nerve is considered to be the terminal or main branch of the inferior alveolar nerve, especially trifurcate with no designated names as soon as it emerges from the mental foramen. The textbooks define the innervation area of the mental nerve regionally without naming its terminal branches. Nomina Anatomica designates 3 terminal branches of mental nerve as "labial, gingival, and mental branch" but offers no description about their distribution on the mandible. In the present study, bilateral dissections were performed on the lower lip specimens of 2

[A method of osteoplasty of the mental region of the mandible].

Correction of the lower jaw contours is one of the most popular tasks in aesthetic maxillofacial surgery. There are many reduction operations aimed at changing the shape of the lower jaw. However, augmentation mandible plasty is mainly associated with the use of synthetic implants. In 2013, A. Triaca published a paper «chin wing technique» in detail, which we used as a prototype. In this article, we will present the technique and experience of using osteoplastic three-dimensional mandible plasty, which has a number of special features: the increase in the bigonial width is due to the median ve

Puberty and Transdiagnostic Risks for Mental Health.

Puberty in girls represents a notable period of vulnerability for different psychological disorders. The research literature has primarily considered external and contextual factors that might explain these rises in symptomatology. In the present study, we investigate relations of pubertal status and timing with individual cognitive, emotional, and behavioral tendencies, commonly identified as transdiagnostic processes, in a sample of N = 228 girls (Mage  = 11.75 years). We also test whether these transdiagnostic processes mediate associations of pubertal status and pubertal timing with depres

Personality and risk for serious mental illness.

AIM: Certain personality traits may be related to an increased risk of developing a severe mental illness (SMI). This study examined differences in personality characteristics in a sample of youth at-risk of SMI across different clinical stages compared to healthy controls (HCs). METHOD: Personality characteristics were assessed with the NEO-Five-Factor Inventory-3 for 41 non-help seeking asymptomatic youth with risk factors for SMI (Stage 0), 52 youth with early mood and anxiety symptoms and distress (Stage 1a), 108 youth with an attenuated psychiatric syndrome (Stage 1b), and 42 HCs. The Business Case for Mental Health Equity.

More than 47 million Americans experience mental illness each year, and more than 9.2 million suffer from mental health and substance use disorders. More than 60% of adults with mental illness and 81% of those with substance use disorders do not receive treatment. As the human and financial costs from our nation's mental health and substance use disorders crisis escalate, a strong business case to better address this crisis has emerged. This article describes the root causes and cost of disparities and offers an innovative perspective on aligning stakeholders to make the business case for equi

Achieving Mental Health Equity: Addictions.

Despite available treatment options for addiction, there remains an abysmal uptake of treatment initiation and engagement among varying communities. The existing treatment gap is based on historical occurrences, including discriminatory drug policies that have targeted communities of color with addiction. The current opioid epidemic and differential treatment therein exemplifies the severity of the existing disparity in addiction treatment, highlighting barriers such as institutionalized racism and vulnerabilities in the social determinants of health. To mitigate the disparity, an array of sol

Mental Health Care for LGBT Youths.

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) youths comprise a diverse population with unique developmental experiences and needs. Many experience some form of anti-LGBT stigma. Although most LGBT youths cope well and are free from mental illness, they are at increased risk for a number of psychiatric and other health problems compared with the general population. These problems include depression, anxiety, suicidality, tobacco and substance use, and disordered eating. These disorders are significant sources of morbidity and mortality and are risk factors for other health problems, including

Cannabinoids and their therapeutic applications in mental disorders
.

Mental disorders represent a significant public health burden worldwide due to their high prevalence, chronically disabling nature, and substantial impact on quality of life. Despite growing knowledge of the pathological mechanisms that underlie the development of these disorders, a high percentage of patients do not respond to first-line clinical treatments; thus, there is a strong need for alternative therapeutic approaches. During the past half-century, after the identification of the endocannabinoid system and its role in multiple physiological processes, both natural and synthetic cannabi

Mental Disorders in Sexually Abused Children.

Sexual abuse in childhood is associated with many adverse consequences for survival during their lifetime. Numerous research studies clearly show the link between sexual abuse of children and the spectrum of unfavorable mental, social, sexual, interpersonal and behavioral as well as physical health consequences. Current research shows the strongest link between sexual abuse of children and the presence of depression, alcohol and abuse of other psychoactive substances and nutritional disorders in surviving women and anxiety-related disorders in male survivors. There is also an increased risk of

Marketized Mentality, Street Codes and Violence.

The article examines the recent individual level extensions to Institutional Anomie Theory. It explores if a marketized mentality is important to the development of a violent street code that encourages violence as a method of self-enhancement, as well as a factor directly leading to violence. Further, it investigates if the impact of the marketized mentality on violence is moderated by risk-taking and violent peers. It controls for other important factors associated with violence including physical abuse, homelessness, violent victimization, and social bonds. The research utilizes self-report
