Advanced laparoscopic skills decrease the learning curve for laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass.

BACKGROUND: The reported learning curve for laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (LRYGB) is 20-100 cases. Our aim was to investigate whethe … se of gastric volvulus of the remnant stomach. CONCLUSIONS: A bariatric fellowship and/or extended mentoring are not required to safely initiate a bariatric program for surgeons with advanced laparoscopic skills. Operative time decreases significantly with experience, but morbidity and mortality remain low even early in the learning curve. A comprehensive …

Digital Peer Support Intervention for Family Caregivers of Individuals With Neuromuscular Disease: Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Neuromuscular diseases (NMD) affect nerves and muscles, resulting in weakness and often profound disability. Family caregivers of individuals with NMD experience significant psychological burden, stress, and reduced well-being. Digital peer support interventions may help to ameliorate these negative impacts. OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated the effect of a 12-week digital peer support intervention compared to usual care on caregiver mastery, competence, stress, burden, anxiety, and depression among family caregivers of individuals with NMD. METHODS: We conducted a parallel-group m

Learning from lockdown - Assessing the positive and negative experiences, and coping strategies of researchers during the COVID-19 pandemic.

With the disruption of nonessential research due to the COVID-19 pandemic, researchers faced unexpected changes in their work and personal life. We assessed what challenges researchers encountered during lockdown and whether gender, career level, discipline, and job-permanency influenced their experiences (negative and positive), thereby collecting empirical material which could provide valuable information for future mentoring/supporting practices. Data were collected between July-August 2020 via an online-survey, and answers from 210 respondents (78% female, 21% male, 1% non-disclosed gender…

"We Were Movement People First": Teaching Writing through Relationship and Struggle.

We interviewed Minnie Bruce around her dining table in Syracuse, NY in December 2019. In this excerpt from the interview, we share how Minnie Bruce learned to teach through organizing; how her classroom shifted us from parallel learners to siblings in the struggle; and how she joined us as our coconspirator, friend, and mentor after her retirement. She touches on how much rural Alabama-particularly the Cahaba River and the creatures that inhabit it-shaped her understanding of land, liberation, and creative practice. Learning from Minnie Bruce, both in college classrooms and in community organi

Role of Social Environmental Protective Factors on Anxiety and Depressive Symptoms Among Midwestern Homeless Youth.

We employ a social stress framework, which examines the influence of multiple stressors (e.g., physical abuse, foster care placement) on an individual's ability to function (e.g., mental well-being), to longitudinally examine the effects of stressful life events on mental health and the role of the social environment in this process among 150 homeless youth. Results revealed that numerous stressors, such as physical abuse and running away from home more frequently, were associated with greater depressive symptoms and elevated anxiety. Having mentors and family and friends from home that youth

Reading, laterality, and the brain: early contributions on reading disabilities by Sara S. Sparrow.

Although best known for work with children and adults with intellectual disabilities and autism spectrum disorders, training in speech pathology and a doctorate in clinical psychology and neuropsychology was the foundation for Sara Sparrow's long-term interest in reading disabilities. Her first papers were on dyslexia and laterality, and the maturational lag theory of developmental dyslexia proposed with Paul Satz, her mentor. The research program that emerged from this work had a wide impact on early neuropsychological models of reading disabilities. Although Sara went on to research focused

The wizard and the gatekeeper: of castles and contracts.

The wizards and the gatekeepers were unhappy. There were many reasons for their unhappiness. They worked hard but felt that too much was being demanded of them. The poorly people's charter was resulting in unrealistic expectations, and changes in the apprenticeship for wizards were putting great strain on their mentors. The wizards enjoyed their work less and less, and it was getting difficult to find new gatekeepers. On the other hand, the way the system worked meant that there had to be plenty of goblins and the number of scrolls that had to be filled in was rising sharply. The wizards and g

Ethical aspects in the care of a child with infantile spinal muscular atrophy (SMA).

The pediatrician has a privileged relationship with a child with infantile spinal muscular atrophy (SMA). At all times, he/she must be the child's mentor, promoting a comprehensive approach and support in order to ensure the best possible solution for the patient's autonomy. In all circumstances, an ethical stance is essential. After a reminder on the notions of ethics of care, we will address various ethical questions encountered through three critical situations during the care of a child with infantile spinal muscular atrophy: the announcement of the diagnosis, the transmission of informati

A healthy tension in translational research.

I would like to express my sincere appreciation to the American Society for Clinical Investigation and the Harrington Discovery Institute for the honor of being named the inaugural recipient of the Harrington Prize for Innovation in Medicine. I accept this distinction with a deep sense of gratitude and debt to my mentors, trainees, colleagues, collaborators, patients, and family. Moments of recognition such as this are rare, savored, and sustaining. They also invariably provoke personal reflection about what exactly is being recognized. If something innovative truly stands apart in my work, I

Color vision and contrast sensitivity tests in early diagnosis of primary open-angle glaucoma.

Color vision was examined by the Farnsworth 100 hue test in 48 eyes with ocular hypertension (OHT). Thirteen eyes had a general loss of color discrimination and 8 had a blue-yellow axis. Spatial contrast sensitivity was tested in 31 eyes with OHT by the Mentor B-VAT and was reduced in 8 of them. Temporal contrast sensitivity was explored in 40 eyes with OHT by the Flickersyst&m and showed abnormal responses in 11 eyes. According to the lack of specificity of the responses and the overlapping of the results of normal eyes and OHT eyes, those tests are not useful for classifying an individual pa

Personalized learning path recommendation for middle school students based on joint optimization of deep reinforcement learning and knowledge tracing.

The rapid advancement of personalized education has created an urgent need for intelligent learning path recommendation systems that can dynamically adapt to students' evolving knowledge states. However, existing learning path recommendation systems predominantly rely on static knowledge graphs or simple heuristic rules, failing to capture the temporal dynamics of student knowledge acquisition and the complex multi-objective nature of learning optimization. This paper proposes Path-Mentor, a novel framework that integrates a Temporal-Aware Graph Knowledge Tracing Network (TA-GKTN) with a Multi

Assessing the impact, barriers and facilitators of peer-driven interventions on the prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV in low- and middle-income countries: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Peer interventions may improve retention across the prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) cascade in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), where poor adherence to antiretroviral therapy (ART) remains a major barrier. This systematic review and meta-analysis evaluated the impact of peer support interventions on PMTCT outcomes to inform scalable strategies. METHODS: Following PRISMA guidelines, we searched PubMed, Cochrane Library, Scopus and Google Scholar (2008-2025) using terms including 'peer mentors,' 'PMTCT' and 'LMICs.' Independent reviewers conducted data
