Distribution pattern of tenascin-C in normal and neoplastic mesenchymal tissues.

Descriptions for tenascin-C distribution are largely restricted to epithelial tumours. The present study utilized newly developed and characterized monoclonal (hT191) and polyclonal antibodies to investigate the distribution pattern of tenascin-C in a panel of mesenchymal tumours, which was contrasted with normal tissue. The specific antibodies recognized the distinctive star-like hexabrachion protein isolated from transformed cell-culture medium and serum from normal individuals. In normal tissues, a strong tenascin-C expression in the extracellular matrix was largely restricted to basement-m

Role of the early epithelium in the patterning of the teeth and Meckel's cartilage.

Embryonic epithelium from the mandibular branchial arch organizes the dentition and the deposition of Meckel's cartilage. During 9-11 days of gestation mandibular arch epithelium can induce teeth in nondental ectomesenchyme in both mice and birds. In addition, the deposition of Meckel's cartilage as a rod of cartilage in the middle of the first branchial arch is under the control of the epithelium. The epithelium inhibits chondrogenesis; if it is removed, large amorphous masses of cartilage are found instead of the narrow rod typical of Meckel's cartilage.

Rare Location of a Dermoid Cyst in the Parotid Gland: A Case Report.

Dermoid cyst of the parotid gland is a lesion composed of benign tissues of ectodermal and mesodermal origin. Although a dermoid cyst can be encountered across nearly all sites of the body, its location in the head and neck area is quite uncommon and even more unusual inside the parotid gland. We present a case of a patient with gradually enlarging tumour in her right parotid gland who underwent surgical removal of the tumour histologically corresponding to a dermoid cyst.

Incontinentia pigmenti (Bloch-Sulzberger syndrome) manifesting as painful periungual and subungual tumours.

A 25-year-old lady presented with painful periungual tumours which were associated with lytic changes of underlying terminal phalanges. She had been previously treated as a case of chronic paronychia but the problem recurred. She was subsequently diagnosed as a case of Incontinentia pigmenti which is a rare genodermatosis with mixed ectodermal and mesodermal polydysplasias, onchychodystrophy being a very rare manifestation. She was treated by excision of painful finger lesions, but there is no specific treatment for the underlying condition.

Pulmonary hamartoma syndrome.

We reviewed 24 charts of patients with pulmonary hamartoma; numerous congenital anomalies and benign tumors were observed in this series. Most of the observed associations are known to occur in patients with Cowden's syndrome, which is characterized by multiple hamartomatous neoplasms of ectodermal, mesodermal, and endodermal origin; however, to our knowledge, there has been no reported association between pulmonary hamartoma and Cowden's syndrome. We conclude that pulmonary hamartomas are frequently accompanied by other developmental abnormalities and benign tumors.

[Mature lumbar multi-tissue dysembryoma of the spinal cord with sacral spina bifida occulta].

The authors report the case of a 28-year-old woman who presented with L5 bilateral sciatica associated with perineal sensory disorders. During surgery, a mature pluritissular dysembryoma originating in a tethered spinal cord was discovered at the level of the L2-L3 intervertebral space. Following removal of the lesion, all symptoms disappeared. Mature pluritissular dysembryomas of the spinal cord result from the inclusion of neuroectodermal and mesodermal tissue which has not followed normal evolutive embryonic organization.

[Cytology and histology of vaginal leiomyosarcoma: a rare tumor (author's transl)].

Leiomyosarcomas as primary tumors are usually found in the corpus uteri or the cervix, they are extremely rare in the vagina. Case report of a 45 yr old woman with primary Leiomyosarcoma of the vagina. The cytological diagnosis was difficult, as a differentiation between Leiomyosarcoma, Melanoma and mesodermal mixed-tumor by means of cytology is not univocal. The histological diagnosis is certain. The tumor is demonstrated in its many histological and cytological aspects. The reaction to radiation is poor. Prognosis depends upon time of diagnosis and treatment and is usually unfavorable.

Thoracic liposarcoma: resection and chest wall reconstruction.

Liposarcoma is a malignant neoplasm of mesodermal origin derived from adipose tissue. It most often originates in the extremities and retroperitoneum, and less frequently in the head and neck. Liposarcoma involving the chest wall is extremely rare with few reported cases. Surgery is the mainstay of treatment, and complete resection is the major factor influencing survival. We describe the case of a 65-year-old man diagnosed with a dedifferentiated liposarcoma of the chest wall, who underwent radical resection and chest wall reconstruction with a latissimus dorsi musculocutaneous flap.

Pentalogy of Cantrell: a case report.

Pentalogy of Cantrell is a rare congenital anomaly characterised by deficiency of midline mesodermal structures with congenital heart disease. Here a six-year-old girl who underwent surgery was presented with a large abdominal swelling. She had a large supra-umbilical abdominal wall defect covered with coarse tissue through which the abdominal contents were herniating. The lower sternum and xiphoid were deficient. Collaboration between cardiac surgeons and plastic surgeons is essential for optimal treatment.

Commissuroplasty for macrostomia.

Macrostomia is a rare facial malformation caused by failure of mesodermal migration merging to obliterate the embryonic grooves between the maxillary and mandibular processes during the early phase of gestation. This kind of malformation may require the use of several surgical techniques to repair the facial structure. Bibliographic studies concerning the repair of this malformation are focused on the description of mucosa, muscle, and skin flaps disconnected between them. This article presents a description of a unique myomucosal flap from vermillion for the correction of the existing malform…

This anomalous situation, it can be had to a congenital malformation of the development of its suspensory elements and fall toward the inferior abdomen or else to an inferior growth of the mesodermic yolk of that this organ originates itself. The suitable treatment is the laparoscopic splenopexy, but when it exists infarct…

Polytopic anomalies with agenesis of the lower vertebral column.

We describe clinical, pathological and radiological findings in 15 cases of sporadic and familial lower spine agenesis with additional anomalies of the axial skeleton and internal organs and speculate about the cause and pathogenesis of this malformation complex. We show that all of these findings are defects of blastogenesis, originate in the primary developmental field and/or the progenitor fields, thus representing polytopic field defects. This concept appears applicable in our cases and makes such terms such as "caudal regression syndrome" or "axial mesodermal dysplasia spectrum" redundant…

Prenatal ultrasonographic findings in Proteus syndrome.

Proteus syndrome, a disorder which consists of skeletal, hamartomatous and other mesodermal malformations proves to be tremendously variable. Although most of the patients show deformities at birth, the diagnosis is usually made later in life as the phenotype develops over time. We report on the case of a fetus presenting in utero, with a cystic abdominal mass and malposition of the fingers, which was found to have additional features of Proteus syndrome after termination of pregnancy. This case demonstrates that severe cases of Proteus syndrome can be detected prenatally.

Mucinous adenocarcinoma of the endometrium with intestinal differentiation: a case report.

Mucinous differentiation of endocervical type has been well documented in endometrial carcinoma. However, we describe an unusual case of adenocarcinoma of the endometrium showing diffuse histological, immunohistochemical, and ultrastructural evidence of intestinal differentiation. Although intestinal differentiation has been described in mesodermally derived tissues including endocervix, ovary, and urinary tract, it has not been reported in normal endometrium. One previous case has been reported showing this pattern in endometrial carcinoma. Possible histogenetic mechanisms of this pattern are…

Enchondromatosis (Ollier's disease) and ovarian juvenile granulosa cell tumor.

An ovarian juvenile granulosa cell tumor in a 15-year-old white girl is reported. The patient had enchondromatosis (Ollier's disease). amd a review of the literature revealed two previous reports linking enchondromatosis with ovarian sex-cord stromal tumors. This heretofore unrecognized association between these two unusual lesions indirectly supports a generalized mesodermal dysplasia in patients with enchondromatosis. It also draws attention to the possible emergence of ovarian neoplasms in addition to the more frequently encountered chondrosarcomas.

Congenital perforated cornea in Peter's anomaly.

A male infant was born with a perforated left cornea associated with bilateral central corneal defects caused by mesodermal dysgenesis. Smears and culture of the perforated cornea revealed no infectious agents, and there was no evidence of systemic infection in the child or mother at birth. Histopathologic material excised during keratoplasty was compatible with persistent hyperplastic vitreous, possibly causing a forward displacement of the lens/iris diaphragm with pressure on the corneal endothelium and possible dissolution of the cornea leading to perforation. The relationship of increased …

Conserved roles of cardiac endothelial ETS factors in ventricular development and disease.

We previously identified ETS1 as a candidate gene in the rare chromosomal deletion disorder, Jacobsen syndrome (JS, OMIM#147791). Here, we present data from four model systems that define roles for ETS factors in normal heart development and suggest how defects in these genes contribute to congenital heart disease. In frog, knockdown of Ets1 in cardiac mesoderm led to a hypoplastic ventricle with impaired cardiac function and loss of trabecular myocardium. Grafting of wildtype cardiac mesodermal tissue restored the integrity of the ventricular endocardial layer and normal development. In zebra…

Transcriptional, developmental, and functional parallels of lymphatic and venous smooth muscle.

Lymphatic muscle cells (LMCs) are indispensable for lymphatic vessel contraction and their aberrant recruitment or absence is associated wit … . Through lineage tracing, we demonstrate that a subpopulation of LMCs and SMCs originate from WT1+ mesodermal progenitors, which are known to give rise to SMCs. LMCs, however, do not derive from Nkx2.5+ cardiomyocyte progenitors. Overall, our findings suggest that venous SMCs and LMCs and may derive from a related mesodermal progenitor and adopt a similar …
