Anosognosia in Alzheimer's disease: diagnosis, frequency, mechanism and clinical correlates.

Anosognosia is present in a large proportion of patients with mild Alzheimer's disease (AD), and its frequency increases with the progression of the illness. Several instruments have been validated to assess anosognosia in AD, but there is no consensus regarding the best diagnostic strategy. Anosognosia in AD is a significant predictor of apathy and is significantly related to lower depression and anxiety scores, more severe caregiver burden and dangerous behaviours. Studies using different imaging modalities have demonstrated an association between anosognosia and dysfunction in frontal, temp

Multivoxel neurofeedback selectively modulates confidence without changing perceptual performance.

A central controversy in metacognition studies concerns whether subjective confidence directly reflects the reliability of perceptual or cognitive processes, as suggested by normative models based on the assumption that neural computations are generally optimal. This view enjoys popularity in the computational and animal literatures, but it has also been suggested that confidence may depend on a late-stage estimation dissociable from perceptual processes. Yet, at least in humans, experimental tools have lacked the power to resolve these issues convincingly. Here, we overcome this difficulty by…

Discovering that the shoe fits: the self-validating role of stereotypes.

Stereotypes can influence social perceptions in many ways. The current research examined a previously unexplored possibility-that activation of a stereotype can validate thoughts about other people when the thoughts are stereotype consistent (i.e., that stereotype activation can increase people's confidence in their previous stereotype-consistent thoughts). Given previous results for other forms of metacognition, this thought validation from stereotype activation should be most likely when people have the cognitive capacity to carefully process individuating information. In two experiments, pa…

Investigating Retrospective and Prospective Metamemory Judgments During Episodic Memory in Patients With Obsessive-Compulsive Disorders.

It is clear evidence that individuals diagnosed with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) lack confidence in their memory and have low metamemory performance (judgment and accuracy). However, it is still unclear whether low metamemory performance is specific to first, domain general or domain specific, and second, to stimulus domain. To address these issues, we compared individuals diagnosed with OCD and healthy controls (HCs) on recognition, retrospective (judgments of learning [JOL]) and prospective (feeling of knowing [FOK]) metamemory judgments and under three different episodic memory task

Less is more: The availability heuristic in early childhood.

This study examined whether young children are influenced by the subjective experience associated with an easy or difficult recall when making memory decisions. Seventy-one children, aged 4, 6, and 8 years, were asked to generate either a small (easy condition) or large (hard condition) number of first names. Statistical analyses revealed that participants in the hard condition were more likely to infer that they did not know many names than participants in the easy condition, contrary to what would be expected if children based their memory judgement on the objective number of recalled items.

Reconceptualizing audience presence in music performance anxiety: a multilevel framework of external conditions and internal representation.

This paper develops a multilevel framework to explain how audience presence shapes music performance anxiety (MPA). It distinguishes between external audience conditions, including Physical Attendance (PA) and Alternative Attendance (AA), and internally generated audience representations, termed Imaginative Attendance (IA). The framework also differentiates audience-related inputs in terms of Externally Assigned Identity (EAI) and Perceived Evaluative Identity (PEI), which are integrated through Perceived Social Evaluation (PSE), a contextual appraisal process. PSE shapes cognitive, emotional,

Anton syndrome after subarachnoid hemorrhage and delayed cerebral ischemia: A case report.

We report the case of a patient with ruptured middle cerebral artery aneurysm, subarachnoid hemorrhage and frontal intracerebral hemorrhage, who secondarily presented with delayed cerebral ischemia and bilateral occipital infarcts, with complete vision loss, visual anosognosia, and confabulations as the main symptoms. Additionally, the patient had defined features of Cotard syndrome, as revealed by persistent nihilistic delusions. The brain imaging studies showed a bilateral occipital ischemic lesion, as well as frontal and parietal hemorrhagic lesions in the right hemisphere. We address the g

Primary and secondary anosognosia for memory impairment in patients with Alzheimer's disease.

The neuropsychology of anosognosia for memory impairment in Alzheimer's disease (AD) was examined in 92 AD patients and 92 case matched individuals for comparison, using three quantitative methods of assessment: Experimenter Rating Scale (ERS), Objective Judgement Discrepancy (OJD) and Subjective-Rating Discrepancy (SRD). The OJD showed significant domain specific correlations with memory functioning as well as a significant correlation with susceptibility to intrusional errors. Memory or executive dysfunction may affect the immediate ability to judge cognitive performance in a domain specific

Evaluating multimodal explainable adaptive learning in university EFL education: Learner outcomes, teacher oversight, and implementation conditions.

Artificial intelligence (AI) offers substantial potential for personalized English as a Foreign Language (EFL) instruction, yet concerns remain regarding the transparency of adaptive recommendations, the fragmentation of learner data, and the preservation of teacher oversight. This study empirically evaluates the Multimodal Explainable Adaptive Learning Framework (MEALF), a pedagogical-computational framework operationalized through a prototype system that integrates textual, oral, visual, and behavioral learner information with explainable adaptive recommendations. Grounded in sociocultural t

Organizational transitions in awareness: a framework of access, coordination, and regulation.

Consciousness research often uses overlapping terms such as consciousness, awareness, conscious access, subjective experience, reportability, selfhood, and metacognition. This conceptual compression can make it difficult to distinguish different awareness-related processes or to identify which capacities are preserved, disrupted, or restored across altered states. This paper proposes an organizational framework for distinguishing awareness processes in terms of constrained access, representational coordination, adaptive regulation, and recursive self-modeling. The framework distinguishes three…

Beliefs about Binge Eating: Psychometric Properties of the Eating Beliefs Questionnaire (EBQ-18) in Eating Disorder, Obese, and Community Samples.

Binge eating is a core diagnostic feature of bulimia nervosa, binge eating disorder, anorexia nervosa binge/purge type, and is a common feature of "other specified" and "unspecified" feeding and eating disorders. It has been suggested that specific metacognitive beliefs about food, eating, and binge eating may play a key role in the maintenance of binge eating behaviour. The Eating Beliefs Questionnaire (EBQ-18) provides a brief self-report assessment tool measuring three types of metacognitive beliefs: negative, positive, and permissive beliefs about food and eating. This study aimed to build

HD-tDCS over the left DLPFC increases cued recall and subjective question familiarity rather than other aspects of memory and metamemory.

When retrieving information from memory there is an interplay between memory and metamemory processes, and the prefrontal cortex has been implicated in both memory and metamemory. Previous work shown that High Definition transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (HD-tDCS) over the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) can lead to improvements in memory and metamemory monitoring, but findings are mixed. Our original design targeted metamemory, but because the prefrontal cortex plays a role in both memory and metamemory, we tested for effects of HD-tDCS on multiple memory tasks (e.g., recall, cue

'To me, it's like a little box of tricks': Breaking the depressive interlock as a programme participant in mindfulness-based cognitive therapy.

OBJECTIVES: Mindfulness meditation practices have become increasingly popular in clinical therapies, changing patterns of depressogenic thinking for individuals who experience consecutive episodes of depression. We were interested in finding out how mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) worked for programme participants by focussing on how meditative practices changed their relationships with their thoughts. DESIGN: Data for the study came from six semi-structured research interviews carried out with individuals who had taken part in an 8-week MBCT programme. METHODS: We used interpreta

Emotional intelligence and self-regulated learning: psychological pathways to student engagement and academic performance.

Emotional intelligence (EI) and self-regulated learning (SRL) have emerged as central constructs for explaining why some students sustain engagement and achieve academically under pressure while others succumb to burnout and inefficiency. This mini-review synthesizes theoretical and empirical work on the association between EI and SRL and on the psychological pathways through which the two jointly shape academic engagement and performance. We first situate the EI-SRL relationship within self-regulation theory and contrast the ability and trait models of EI, specifying how each maps onto distin

The perceptual and phenomenal capacity of mental imagery.

Little research has examine … l feature heterogeneity, are attenuated by concurrent retinal stimulation and are endowed with good metacognition. Aha-related surprise tracks violated expectations at multiple levels in perceptual insight.

Insight is often accompanied by an Aha experience, but why some solutions feel especially insightful remains unclear. The insight-as-prediction-error (IPE) account proposes that this experience arises when a solution violates expectations formed before recognition. Here, we tested whether this account generalizes to perceptual insight and whether Aha-related surprise reflects violated expectations at multiple levels. Across two online experiments (Experiment 1: N = 50; Experiment 2: N = 43), participants briefly previewed Mooney images, rated expected solvability, attempted to identify the hid

A randomized controlled trial of emotion regulation therapy for generalized anxiety disorder with and without co-occurring depression.

OBJECTIVE: Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) and major depression (MDD), especially when they co-occur, are associated with suboptimal treatment response. One common feature of these disorders is negative self-referential processing (NSRP; i.e., worry, rumination), which worsens treatment outcome. Emotion Regulation Therapy (ERT) integrates principles from affect science with traditional and contemporary cognitive-behavioral treatments to identify and modify the functional nature of NSRP by targeting motivational and regulatory mechanisms, as well as behavioral consequences. METHOD: Building
