Dust in the underground railway tunnels of an Italian town.

This article assesses hazards associated with exposure to dust in tunnels and platforms of the A and B lines of Rome's underground railway and provides an informed opinion on the risks to workers and the travelling public of exposure to tunnel dust. The study focused on the analysis and measurement of dust granulometric classes PM10, respirable fraction, respirable combustible dust, and the organic, metallic, siliceous, and fibrous components. Comparing the measurement values from the tunnels and platforms with those found at the entrances to the underground railway stations, it emerges that d

Concerns for asthma at pre-placement assessment and health surveillance in platinum refining--a personal approach.

Platinum, a noble metal, is inert in the body and has an important use in medical applications. It is used in autocatalysts to control harmful vehicular emissions and the catalytic effects improve efficiencies of pharmaceutical and petrochemical processes. The refining process involves exposure to halogeno complex salts of platinum which are potent allergens. They induce symptoms typical of a type I allergy, the most significant of which is asthma. Platinum refining not only exposes employees to the risk of sensitization to these salts but also to respiratory irritants. Inhalation of these agg

Urinary protein and enzyme excretion as markers of tubular damage.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: In this review we intend to evaluate the clinical usefulness of measurement of urinary excretion of microproteins and tubular enzymes. RECENT FINDINGS: Studies of patients with acute tubular necrosis showed that the excretion of some well known enzymes and of new markers such as kidney injury molecule-1 has higher value than classic renal function tests for the early detection of the disease as well as for the prediction of the development of overt acute renal failure. Tubular dysfunction may be detected by measurement of the excretion of tubular enzymes and microproteins n

Assessment of risk of lung cancer for welders.

Certain welding fumes contain significant amounts of chromium, manganese, and nickel, and trace amounts of arsenic and lead. These metals exhibit mutagenicity in one or more in vitro bioassays, and several are strongly suspected human carcinogens, albeit in unknown forms. It might, therefore, be expected that welders experience an excess risk of respiratory tract cancer because of their occupation. A survey of the world literature has disclosed 22 epidemiological studies of cancer incidence among welders, 16 of which yield a total of 586 cases of lung cancer observed, based on approximately 60

Anesthetic Management for the Retrieval of Retained Intrathoracic Foreign Bodies Adjacent to Critical Mediastinal Structures Using One-Lung Ventilation With a Bronchial Blocker: A Report of Two Cases.

Retained intrathoracic metallic foreign bodies (FBs) following penetrating chest trauma represent a challenging surgical emergency, particularly when situated in proximity to critical mediastinal structures. Anesthetic management in such cases demands meticulous airway planning, expertise in lung isolation techniques, and vigilant anticipation of physiological changes during one-lung ventilation. We describe two adult men with penetrating chest trauma and retained metallic FBs adjacent to critical mediastinal structures, both managed under general anesthesia with left lung isolation using a br

Application of nail analysis in human biomonitoring of toxic pollutants: A review.

Nail tissue, as a keratinized biomatrix, serves as a valuable indicator of chronic human exposure to toxic pollutants. The analysis of nail samples has emerged as a prominent method for human exposure assessment, primarily due to its non-invasive sampling procedure and ease of sample storage and transportation. This review examines recent applications of nail analysis in human biomonitoring of toxic organic compounds and heavy metals, along with the various pretreatment methods that have been developed. Studies of human nail samples have revealed distinctive patterns in toxic pollutant accumul

Exposure and emissions monitoring during carbon nanofiber production--Part II: polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons.

Production of carbon nanofibers and nanotubes (CNFs/CNTs) and their composite products is increasing globally. High-volume production may increase the exposure risks for workers who handle these materials. Though health effects data for CNFs/CNTs are limited, some studies raise serious health concerns. Given the uncertainty about their potential hazards, there is an immediate need for toxicity data and field studies to assess exposure to CNFs/CNTs. An extensive study was conducted at a facility that manufactures and processes CNFs. Filter, sorbent, cascade impactor, bulk, and microscopy sample

A case-control study on the relationship of hearing function and blood concentrations of lead, manganese, arsenic, and selenium.

Previous research has suggested that heavy metals may be ototoxic in humans, and further, that a reversal of this toxicity may occur when the trace element selenium is present, through formation of metals selenide complexes. This study investigates the relationship between hearing thresholds and blood concentrations of four elements (selenium, lead, manganese, and arsenic) in factory workers, Taiwan. We conducted a hospital-based case-control study with 294 individuals who received the periodic occupational health examination in the Kaohsiung Medical University Hospital. All control subjects (

Mercury compounds and the immune system: a review.

This article reviews the literature data concerning the immunologic monitoring of animals and cell cultures exposed to mercury compounds. Mercury is present in nature as metallic mercury, mono- and bivalent inorganic compounds, and organic alkyl, aryl and alloxy-alkyl compounds. Methylmercury is most important in terms of environmental exposure while metallic mercury is the most common form to which workers are exposed. The database on immune function disturbances in human induced by mercury compounds is limited. Immunotoxicity assessment in animals, mainly in rodents, with subsequent extrapol

Metal working fluids: sub-chronic effects on pulmonary functions in B6C3F1 mice given vitamin E deficient and sufficient diets.

Metal working fluids (MWFs) have been widely known to cause asthma and neoplasia of the larynx, pancreas, rectum, skin and urinary bladder (Textbook of Clinical Occupational and Environmental Medicine (1994) 814; Am. J. Ind. Med. 32 (1997) 240; Am. J. Ind. Med. 33 (1997) 282; Am. J. Ind. Med. 22 (1994) 185). Other non-neoplastic respiratory effects in industrial workers attributed to MWFs include increased rates of cough, phlegm production, wheeze, chronic bronchitis and chest tightness (Eur. J. Resir. Dis. 63(118) (1982), 79; J. Occup. Med. 24 (1982) 473; Am. J. Ind. Med. 32 (1997) 450). The

The state of hand rub dispensers in healthcare settings - a multicenter assessment in 19 German healthcare facilities.

BACKGROUND: Hand hygiene is one of the most important hygiene measures to prevent healthcare-associated infections. Well-functioning hand rub dispensers are the foundation of hand hygiene but are often overlooked in research. As the point of origin for hand hygiene, dispensers not only promote compliance through ease of use, but also strongly influence the amount of hand rub used per disinfection. This work investigates how dispenser types and conditions affect dispensed volumes and usability. METHODS: Data from 5,014 wall-mounted or point-of-care dispensers was collected from 19 German healt

Field evaluation of a modified intervention for overhead drilling.

Drilling holes into concrete or metal ceilings is one of the most physically demanding tasks performed in construction. The work is done overhead with rotary impact hammer drills that weigh up to 40 N. The task is associated with pain and musculoskeletal disorders at the wrist, forearm, shoulder, and back. The mechanism of injury is thought to be the high forces and non-neutral shoulder and wrist postures applied during drilling. Previously, we described a field study of a foot lever and inverted drill press intervention devices that received poor usability ratings compared with the usual meth

Enhanced PM filtration and self-adaptive oxygen supply by intelligent powered respirators under extreme conditions with high dust and low oxygen.

Mine workers in high-altitude regions confront the combined physiological threats of severe respirable dust and reduced oxygen partial pressure. Conventional powered air-purifying respirators (PAPRs) are often plagued by premature filter clogging, excessive airflow resistance, compromised facial sealing, and insufficient oxygen delivery. An intelligent PAPR system was disclosed in this work, which synergistically integrates prolonged dust filtration with adaptive oxygen enrichment. The key technical route involved in-situ metal-organic framework (MOF) functionalization of high-efficiency parti

Contact sensitivity and urticaria in "wet" work.

A selected group of 142 hospital "wet" workers with hand eczema was studied. 91% were female. Atopy (58%), metal dermatitis (41%), and hand eczema prior to the current wet work (67%) were more common than in the total cohort to which these patients belonged. Patch tests were carried out on 120 patients and prick tests on 41 with a history of contact urticaria. Water, cleaning agents, hand disinfectants, the wearing of gloves and other trivial irritant factors were claimed to have elicited the current episodes of hand eczema in 92.3% of cases. In 35%, a considerable part of the exposure to irri

Technoeconomic and environmental assessment of industrial organotin compounds.

Current uses of organotins include heat stabilizers for polyvinyl chloride (PVC), catalysts for polyurethane foam and silicone rubber, biocides, and animal health products. Domestic production consumption in 1982 is about 28 million pounds, and overall growth is estimated at 7 percent per year. Physical properties of organotins, including solubility in water, octanol-water partition coefficients, and Freundlich adsorption isotherm constants, are not well characterized. Analytical methods for tin in environmental and biological matrices involve concentration, separation, and identification by c

Assessment of worker chemical exposures in California vape shops.

E-cigarettes are battery-operated devices that heat a liquid mixture to make an aerosol that is inhaled, or vaped, by the user. Vape shops are retail environments designed to fulfill customer demand for diverse e-liquid flavors and hardware options, which create unique worker exposure concerns. To characterize exposures to vape shop workers, especially to flavoring chemicals associated with known respiratory toxicity, this study recruited vape shops from the San Francisco Bay Area. In six shops, we measured air concentrations for volatile organic compounds, formaldehyde, flavoring chemicals, a

The effect of occupational lead toxicity on testosterone secretion and the L-arginine nitric oxide pathway.

Endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs), including heavy metals such as lead (Pb), interfere with hormonal homeostasis, particularly in the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis. Occupational lead exposure is linked to male reproductive dysfunction and cardiovascular risk via oxidative stress and endothelial impairment. This study investigated the effects of chronic lead exposure on testosterone levels and the L-arginine-nitric oxide (NO) pathway, a key regulator of endothelial function. This case-control study compared 120 male workers with occupational lead exposure (in battery manufacturi
