Morbidity pattern in foundry workers--a cross-sectional study in an urban area of north Karnataka.

Foundry industry which is a well established in India employs many workers. These workers are exposed to metal dusts, metal fumes, chemicals, heat and high temperature. To determine the morbidity pattern in foundry workers, a cross-sectional study was conducted in the semi-urban area of Belgaum in Karnataka. All the workers excluding the administrative staff working in the foundries in the specified area were included in the study. A structured questionnaire was used to collect the data. Thorough physical examination was carried out to find out existing morbidities followed by spirometry test

On the lookout for precursor lesions: where does dry skin end and slight hand eczema begin?

BACKGROUND: The prognosis of occupational hand eczema is strongly associated with its duration, severity, and the onset of treatment. OBJECTIVES: The study was aimed at characterizing skin eruptions that might be potential precursors of occupational hand eczema, their pattern, and typical sites in a population at moderate risk of hand eczema. PATIENTS/MATERIALS/METHODS: Eight hundred German male metal workers took part in a structured interview focused on their medical history combined with a dermatological examination of their hands, by use of the quantitative Hand Eczema Score for Occupati

Asbestos-related disease among sheet metal workers 1986-2004: radiographic changes over time.

BACKGROUND: In 1985, the Sheet Metal Workers International Association and the Sheet Metal and Air Conditioning National Association formed The Sheet Metal Occupational Health Institute Trust (SMOHIT) to examine the health hazards of the sheet metal industry. Between 1986 and 2004 18,211 individuals were examined. At the time of the first examination 9.6% of all participants (1,745) had findings consistent with parenchymal disease (ILO > 1/0), and 21% (3,827) had pleural scarring. METHODS: 2181-Two thousand hundred eighty-one who had no radiographic evidence of pneumoconiosis on baseline exam

Exposure to airborne asbestos during removal and installation of gaskets and packings: a review of published and unpublished studies.

In recent years, questions have been raised about the health risks to persons who have been occupationally exposed to asbestos-containing gaskets and packing materials used in pipes, valves, and machinery (pumps, autos, etc.). Up until the late 1970s, these materials were widely used throughout industrial and maritime operations, refineries, chemical plants, naval ships, and energy plants. Seven simulation studies and four work-site industrial hygiene studies of industrial and maritime settings involving the collection of more than 300 air samples were evaluated to determine the likely airborn

A comparison of portable XRF and ICP-OES analysis for lead on air filter samples from a lead ore concentrator mill and a lead-acid battery recycler.

Personal and area samples for airborne lead were taken at a lead mine concentrator mill, and at a lead-acid battery recycler. Lead is mined as its sulfidic ore, galena, which is often associated with zinc and silver. The ore typically is concentrated, and partially separated, on site by crushing and differential froth flotation of the ore minerals before being sent to a primary smelter. Besides lead, zinc and iron are also present in the airborne dusts, together with insignificant levels of copper and silver, and, in one area, manganese. The disposal of used lead-acid batteries presents enviro

[Exposure to metals, metalloids and their compounds in heavy metals refining].

BACKGROUND: In the process of heavy metals refining, workers are first of all exposed to metals, metalloids (As, Se) and their compounds. Moreover, they are exposed to sulphuric acid and dusts (about 2% SiO2). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Several dozen workers in two Polish plants were studied (Cu, Pb, Cd, Zn, and Ag refining processes, production of Ni sulphate and production of Se). Cd, Ni, Se, Cu, Pb, As and Ag were determined by atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS) with graphite tube, whereas ZnO (as Zn) by AAS with air-acetylene flame. Sulphuric acid was determined by the method given in PN-91

Renal cell cancer risk and occupational exposure to trichloroethylene: results of a consecutive case-control study in Arnsberg, Germany.

BACKGROUND: German studies of high exposure prevalence have been debated on the renal carcinogenicity of trichloroethylene (TRI). METHODS: A consecutive hospital-based case-control study with 134 renal cell cancer (RCC) cases and 401 controls was conducted to reevaluate the risk of TRI in this region which were estimated in a previous study. Exposure was self-assessed to compare these studies. Additionally, the job history was analyzed, using expert-based exposure information. RESULTS: The logistic regression results, adjusted for age, gender, and smoking, confirmed a TRI-related RCC risk in

Occupational and environmental risks of spontaneous abortions around a smelter.

BACKGROUND: This study represents part of a follow-up study on reproductive outcome around a smelter in Sweden. METHODS: Employees at the smelter, a random sample including neighbors of the smelter and referents were analyzed by a register study, covering 1982-1990, a questionnaire study performed in 1992 and a case-referent study with cases of spontaneous abortions and live borns as referents. Risk factors were studied by logistic regression. A validity-study between register and questionnaire data on spontaneous abortions and legal abortions was completed. RESULTS: The studies showed no ri

Mortality and cancer morbidity in workers from an aluminium smelter with prebaked carbon anodes--Part I: Exposure assessment.

OBJECTIVES: To design a job-exposure matrix for epidemiological studies of men who had worked in a Norwegian aluminium smelter between 1922 and 1975. METHODS: Jobs held by cohort members were identified from personnel records. Tasks and their locations were determined for all jobs, and information was gathered about changes in exposure conditions over time. The jobs were combined into categories thought to have experienced similar exposure conditions, and time weighted average exposures were estimated on a relative scale. The results were reviewed by a panel of former smelter employees and an

[Biochemical indicators of carbohydrate and energy metabolism in the Chorzów population after long-term exposure to industrial pollutants].

In three groups of Chorzów inhabitants, living in the most polluted industrial environment, elevated blood lactate and glucose levels, as well as diminished blood ATP level pointed to disturbances in carbohydrate and energy metabolism. In spite of the exposition of people studied to many toxic substances from polluted environment (fluorides, lead and others), a decrease in ATP level was less expressed than in earlier investigated inhabitants of Skawina, exposed to fluorides from the Aluminium Plant, which was probably connected with greater supply of magnesium salts from food and water.

[The problem of severe noise induced hearing loss (author's transl)].

It can be observed that even after severe and long-lasting occupational exposure to noise the hardness of hearing caused by that noise is usually only low or medium-grade. Therefore the question is being examined whether there are any particular causal conditions for those rare cases in which the hardness of hearing caused by noise is more than medium-grade. High noise levels and high frequencies, together with continual constrained physical posture during work, seem to be such conditions according to the statistical evaluation of a wide range of observation data. In such cases the expert is r

Assessing the impact of metalworking exposures on respiratory health: the role of fractional exhaled nitric oxide levels.

OBJECTIVE: The significance of measuring Fractional Exhaled Nitric Oxide (FeNO) has grown, particularly in monitoring respiratory diseases like asthma. FeNO levels indicate inflammation and a rise in response to respiratory irritants. This study investigates whether repeated exposure to irritants in metal casting and coating leads to respiratory inflammation and assesses the benefits of including FeNO measurement in periodic occupational health screenings. METHODS: This cross-sectional study involved 99 workers aged 18-65 in the foundry and metal coating sectors in the İkitelli Organized Indu
