Metallic dental material biocompatibility in osteoblastlike cells: correlation with metal ion release.

Ions released from metallic dental materials used in orthodontic appliances could induce undesirable effects on cells and tissues. This study evaluates the biocompatibility of two of the most labile components of metallic dental alloys on osteoblastlike cells. The influence of protein and ions on metal dissolution properties is also investigated using different electrolyte solutions. Morphological alterations, cell growth, and differentiation of osteoblasts were assessed after exposure to pure metals (Ag, Cu, Pd, Au) and Ni-Ti alloy and correlated with the kinetics of elements released into th…

Surface arthroplasty for osteonecrosis of the hip: hemiresurfacing versus metal-on-metal hybrid resurfacing.

Eighty-four hips with Ficat stage III and IV osteonecrosis were treated: 56 with metal-on-metal surface arthroplasty (MMSA) and 28 with hemi-surface arthroplasty (HSA). Average follow-up was 4.9 years. UCLA hip scores were significantly better for MMSA versus HSA for function and activity as well as Harris Hip scores and physical component of the SF-12 scores. In the MMSA group, 2 hips were revised to total hip arthroplasty for femoral loosening, and 5 hips had adverse radiological changes. In the HSA group, 4 hips were revised (1 sepsis and 3 for pain). There was no evidence of any femoral lo

Heavy metals in human primary teeth: some factors influencing the metal concentrations.

Human primary teeth have been used as indicators of heavy metal exposure for several decades, but the knowledge about the influence of facto … ad, mercury and zinc. Significant, positive correlations are found between lead and the three other metals and between mercury and zinc. We conclude that metal concentrations in primary teeth are affected by the presence of caries and roots and by tooth group.

Electrochemical treatment of wastewaters containing metal-organic complexes: A one-step approach for efficient metal complex decomposition and selective metal recovery.

Metal-organic complexes, especially those of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) with metals such as copper (Cu) and nickel (Ni) (denoted here as Cu-EDTA and Ni-EDTA), are common contaminants in wastewaters from chemical and plating industries. In this study, a multi-electrode (ME) system using a two-chamber reactor and two pairs of electrodes is proposed for simultaneous electrochemical oxidation of a wastewater containing both Cu-EDTA and Ni-EDTA complexes as well as separation and selective recovery of Cu and Ni onto two different cathodes via electrodeposition. Our results demonstrate t…

Strain behavior of malaligned cervical spine implanted with metal-on-polyethylene, metal-on-metal, and elastomeric artificial disc prostheses - A finite element analysis.

BACKGROUND: Postoperative alterations in cervical spine curvature (i.e. loss of lordotic angle) are frequently observed following total disc replacement surgery. However, it remains unclear whether such changes in lordotic angle are due to preoperative spinal deformities and/or prostheses design limitations. The objective of the study is to investigate strain and segmental biomechanics of the malaligned cervical spine following total disc replacement. METHODS: Three disc prostheses were chosen, namely a metal-on-polyethylene, a metal-on-metal, and an elastomeric prosthesis, which feature diff

Cushion bearings versus large diameter head metal-on-metal bearings in total hip arthroplasty: a short-term metal ion study.

INTRODUCTION: Metal-on-metal total hip arthroplasty (MOM THA) has the advantage of replicating the femoral head size, but the postoperative elevation of serum metal ion levels is a cause for concern. Metal-on-polycarbonate-urethane is a new cushion bearing featuring a large diameter metal head coupled with a polycarbonate-urethane liner. AIM: The aim of this study was to assess and compare serum cobalt (Co) and chromium (Cr) levels in a group of 15 patients treated with a cushion bearing THA system (Group A) and a group of 15 patients treated with a MOM THA system (Group B) at short-term. A bioengineered model of human placental exposure to environmental metals during pregnancy.

Exposure of pregnant women to toxic metals is an environmental health issue associated with pregnancy complications. Advancing our biological understanding of this problem and mitigating its adverse effects have been challenged by the ethical constraints of human participant research during pregnancy. Here we present a microphysiological system to experimentally simulate and investigate human placental exposure to environmental metals in maternal circulation. An in vitro analogue of the maternal-fetal interface and its dynamic tissue-specific environment are constructed using primary human pla…

Detection of Microplastics and Heavy Metals Using Electronic Tongues and Machine Learning.

Water resources face a significant environmental challenge: pollution from microplastics (MP) and heavy metals (HM). These elements pose a dual threat to ecosystems and public health. Microplastics, defined as particles smaller than 5 mm, are of anthropogenic origin, resulting from the degradation of plastics by environmental factors such as solar radiation and friction with the surrounding environment, as well as from their addition to cosmetic and textile products. These materials have been widely detected in drinking water and everyday foods. Heavy metals, high-density elements (>5g/cm3), w…

Chronic exposure to low levels of glyphosate and metals induces kidney dysfunction.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) affects ∼15% of US adults and over 840 million people worldwide. Environmental contaminants, including pesticides and metals, are increasingly recognized as disease contributors, yet mechanisms and consequences of long-term, low-level mixture exposures remain poorly defined. Our prior work identified glyphosate and metals (cadmium, arsenic, lead, and vanadium) in drinking water from agricultural regions with high CKD prevalence and showed that early-life co-exposures disrupt kidney development. Here, using adult zebrafish as a mechanistic model, we tested whether c…

Spin transport of compensated metals in combination with Baber-type momentum relaxation.

We present a theoretical framework elucidating the spin transport characteristics in combination with Baber-type momentum relaxation induced … e a spatially oscillatory nature, with a damping length similar to the diffusion lengths of typical metals. In particular, when Baber scattering occurs without accompanying spin relaxation in the presence of other momentum and spin relaxation processes, a spatial oscillatory characteristic without damping is predicted for the anti-total spin current mode …

Health risks associated with occupational contaminants of heavy metals across different professions.

People in various occupations are chronically exposed to a wide range of workplace pollutants that affect overall health. Among these, certain heavy metals pose a risk even at low concentrations over prolonged exposure. This study aims to examine the health effects of specific heavy metals with chronic exposure in different occupational groups within the Pakistani population. A case-control approach was used, comprising 404 individuals with chronic exposure and 170 age- and gender-matched controls. Volunteers from seven different occupational groups participated in the study, including pump at…

Grazing the plastisphere: Trophic transfer of the bioaccumulated metals to Artemia salina.

In any aquatic environment, microplastics (MPs) are rapidly colonized by microbial communities, forming a biofilm known as plastisphere, which modifies their surface properties. The biofilm has been shown to dramatically increase metal accumulation. Yet, the impact of biofilm community structure on the level of the metallic load remains poorly understood, especially the role of seawater nutrients. In addition, contaminants bioaccumulation raises the question of the grazing (or ingestion) of biofouled MPs by higher trophic level. To address this issue, the development and growth of the plastisp

η6-Benzene Tetra-Anion Complexes of Early and Late Rare-Earth Metals.

A novel synthetic route to the triple-decker benzene tetra-anion complexes [(η5-C5iPr5)M(μ:η6:η6-C6H6)M(η5-C5iPr5)] is reported for a range of early and late rare-earth elements, i.e., M = Y, La, Sm, Gd, and Dy (1M). The lanthanum complex 1La is the first benzene tetra-anion complex of the largest rare-earth element. Aromaticity in the 10π-electron benzene ligands is confirmed through crystallographic studies of all compounds and nucleus-independent chemical shift calculations on 1Y and 1La. Analysis of the bonding in 1Y and 1La using density functional theory revealed strong covalency in the
