As zinc status may influence susceptibility to colon cancer, we examined the effect of dietary zinc deficiency on the proliferation of epithelial cells (colonocytes) in the large bowel of rats. When compared to feed-restricted rats, those with zinc deficiency showed a significant reduction in proliferation in the distal colon as assessed by accumulated metaphase arrest and crypt cell production rates in vivo. We describe a 66-year-old man who developed T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) with a sole clonal chromosomal abnormality of 47,XY,+Y. The relative frequencies of XYY and XY cells in XO/XY/XYY mosaic mice were compared between somatic cells (bone marrow) and spermatogonia, and between spermatogonia and pachytene or MI spermatocytes. A 25-year-old female with history of spontaneous abortion and subsequent birth of Down syndrome child was referred for chromosome analysis. Her karyotype revealed 46, XX with pericentric inversion of 9 qh, while her husband was normal with 46, XY chromosomes. The relationship between chromosomal abnormality and oncogene activation was investigated during leukemic progression in two patients with myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS). Both patients had partial or complete deletion of chromosome 5 in metaphase cells obtained throughout the progression to leukemia. The clonal origin of granulocyte-macrophage colony forming cells (CFU-GM) in the myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) was cytogenetically studied. Spontaneous levels of structural chromosomal aberrations in human peripheral lymphocytes were studied cytogenetically in 49 female and 56 male subjects.
